BELLEW TARGETS CLEVERLY TEST

Post by StingLikeABee »

Tony Bellew hopes to take on British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly in the future.

The Liverpool fighter, who defeated Matthew Ellis in his last bout in May, thinks the contest could rival the Nigel Benn-Chris Eubank epics.

"A fight between me and Nathan will be huge in a few years time if we both keep undefeated and building it up" said Bellew.

"I would seriously love that fight and it would be real scrap just like the Benn-Eubank days.

"I think he's a good fighter and he's got fast hands, but I reckon I'm more powerful and would hurt him every time I hit him.

"He did a great job on Danny McIntosh and I was pleased to see him with the British title, but that belt will be around my waist soon.

"Whether it's Nathan I have to face for it or someone else I don't care, I will become British champion.

"People haven't seen 50 per cent of my potential yet, and I can't wait to show everyone what I've got."

Bellew, a former triple ABA champion, has won his first nine professional bouts and he thinks he can deal with the threat of Welshman Cleverly, who has won his last four championship fights by stoppage.

"I won the ABA heavyweight title three times as an amateur, so fighting at light-heavyweight is a bonus because no one can hurt me," said Bellew.

"I've sparred bigger guys throughout my career, including David Haye and David Price, so Cleverly is really going to have to whack if he wants to put a dent in me.

"Last time I gave away a couple of stone to Matthew Ellis and I knocked him out so I know I have the power to knock-out anyone."

I know Tony posts on here- and I mean this with no disrespect, of course, but Cleverley has mixed with a higher level of opposition so far.

I suppose it's really just a question of getting Bellew's career moving towards title now- McIntosh would be a good fight.

Nathan has come on leaps and bounds the last 12-18mths. He really seems to have matured physically - this is being demonstated in his last few fights. The power is really showing.

I wish Tony Bellew all the best. And it would be great if he really could establish himself to be rivalling Cleverly. At the moment though, he has a lot of catching up to do.

I can understand why you guys think that and to an extent I agree BUT time will tell..

I agree he has the experience but no matter how much experience he has over me he ain't got the attributes that I bring to the table, Oh well all in good time, As long as we stay unbeaten this will happen in the end, I agree with the comment of me Vs McIntosh I'd like that fight.

Once again I appreciate all the comments left by yourselves it's much appreciated and thank you..

P.s I never said anything about it being like Benn Vs Eubank, I would never try to compare myself to 2 British Legends such as them.. :TU: That's just press putting there litttle spin on it..

Of couse, no disgrace in saying you need more time to develop your tools, just asking.
The fight could be worth a lot more in a years time, provided both are still undefeated. I don't think Bellew should fight Cleverly just yet. Gradual step ups in class would be better.

Cleverly is 22 and British champion.

Tony, you've had one scheduled 6 round fight. You're 27 in a few months. When do you think you will be ready to step up to 8 rounders ?
