When you fellows get ro LA you might enjoy eating at a new place I discovered just last week. It is on the corner of Seventh and Grand and it is called "Bodegas Louie." Open, bright, clean, freshly prepared food right before your eyes. They opened for business in April and it has grown in popularity ever sicne. Just a thought, my friend forum friends

The Great Duran . . .

This is one of my favorite Roberto Duran bouts.
Nearly 32, fighting three weight classes above lightweight, against a strong unbeaten champ.

Duran beat this man like nobody else, battering, taunting, and ripping him to the body and head.
I have watched this bout so many times in slow-motion, stop-action video.
The distortion of Moore's face when Duran landed his hands of stone reveals a man slowly being executed, and I mean executed.
Had there been no rules or referee to save a game Davey Moore, Duran could have taken his life in the ring that night.
In my opinion, referee Ernest Magana let the bout go on too long. I must say that Davey Moore showed great courage.

This bout likely ruined Davey Moore as a boxer, however, we never had a chance to find out.
Shortly after losing his title to Roberto, Moore was killed when a truck he was working underneath rolled over his body.

A half dozen years later, Iran Brakley flattened Tommy Hearns to win the IBF middleweight title.
Barkley quickly called out 38-year-old Duran, and promised to give him a beating to avenge Duran's destruction of his late buddy Davey Moore, years earlier.
Big mistake. Ancient Roberto, pushing 40, put Iran Barkley on the canvas and took his title via a split-decision.

Roberto Duran is one of my all-time favorite fighters, definitly the favorite from "my" era.
Dempsey, Duran, and three great bantams Ortiz, Olivares & Jofre have always been favorites of mine.
Of course, I also like Ike Williams, Joe Louis, Tony Canzoneri and Henry Armstrong. But who doesn't?

Roberto Duran fits comfortably on any boxing fans all-time list. My opinion?

Hap . . . I'll give the place a try.
The area has really shaped up in recent years.
My father's office used to be on the top floor of the BofA part of the Arco Towers.
That was his neighborhood and he was well known at every restaurant in the area near 5th & Hope, the financial district.

Today, both ARCO and Bank of America no longer occupy the towers.

My father retired more than twenty years ago and was surprised by how much the area has changed since he left.
We were there for lunch late last year.

Good to see downtown starting to have a night life beyond the crazies of skid row.

Kam Nelson Seagren . . .

This is my former sister-in-law and friend, Kam Nelson. (click-on link below)
She was just a 17-year-old high school student when this photo was taken. Her sister Karla and I met about this time.
A year later, she would meet and marry Olympic Gold Medalist & world record pole-vaulter, Bob Seagren.

For three years Kam hosted a KHJ-TV progran, "Groovy" as well as "Boss City", working with major rock bands and L.A. disc jockey's.
Kam and Bob Seagren became regulars at the Olympic Auditorium and the Forum. They would be ringside everytime I, or Ruben Navarro fought.

We have been family for nearly forty years.

As a young man I used to go to the Grand International Theatre on that corner because they showed top quality foreign movies. Hedy Lamar's controversial first film "Ecstasy" premiered there at the time.The Bodegas occupies the bilding that once was Brooks Brothers Men's Clothing. I really think you would enjoy the place as a fresh, wholesome experience.

Brooks Brothers . . .

Hap . . . My grandfather had a reputation for being the best dressed member of many a film production.
Back in his day, the key behind camera artists and technicians dressed with class.
In the late 60's and early 70's, everything changed and the guys started to wear clothes that looked like something out of Woodstock. The younger guys, anyway.

My grandfather had come from very humble beginnings, but he never dressed that way.
I remember one saturday in the mid-60's, shortly after he retired, he drove me down to the Main Street Gym to workout.
Afterwards he said he wanted to make a stop on the way home. The stop was at Brooks Brothers.
He went in, spoke with a gentleman, who brought out a few choices, took my grandad's measurements, and said he could pick it up in a couple of days.

As well as my grandfather dressed, he rarely wore a suit. This was a very conservative blue suit, something you'd see on a high profile trial attorney.
I asked what he needed the suit for, especially since he already had several in his closet?
My grandfather said he'd always wanted a Brooks Brothers suit. He was satisfying a longtime goal.
He taught me a lesson that day. He didn't tell me, he showed me. It all related to goal setting, and positive nature of achieveing it.

Yeah, Hap. I remember the place well. Now I will make a point of eating there. Sounds like a great spot!

Here's a treatment I use when I go to the ranch in Michoacan. Find a big fat cow full of milk grazing in the pasture. Bring out with you one of those pina colada glasses. The tall ones. Put a good shot of homemade mezcal in the glass and then grab Elsie by the tits gently,but firmly(let her know you're the man)and squeeze off about six ounces of hot fresh milk on top of the mezcal. Top it off with those Ovaltine crystals and stir.

They have a name for it down there. Agua Del Cielo(Water From Heaven).That will make you sprout wood. Just don't get close to any sheep.

Before I forget. Did you grab any nurses' behinds?
