If Calzaghe fought the Roy Jones that lost to Tarver...?
could he have won?
I've given yes, no or maybe options. I guess the 1st Tarver fight Roy is a different animal to the 3rd Tarver fight Roy. don't know if that makes the question more complex or not.

Roy looked terrible in the 1st Tarver fight, slow and with hardy any stamina.
Joe could easily have beaten this Jones. But no way would Joe have taken this fight. Because he wouldn't have known, signing up for the fight, that Jones would suffer severe weight drain. Jones' reputation was higher than ever, given that he'd won a version of the heavyweight title from Ruiz. Given that this was a pre Lacy Joe, who may not have believed in himself, I can't see him ever taking what would have been considered such a big rusk.
Credit to Tarver for takign the risk. Shame on Tarver for posing. Let's face it, Tarver was tired, didn't have the desire to go for it.

joe would have taken the fight after the 1st Tarver fight tho barn?

Of course, Jones is on the serious decline at that point. The question is could Calzaghe beat the pre heavyweight Jones.

that isn't the question. i didn't ask that question because on forums there is seldom rational discussion of the pre heavyweight superman-faster-than-a-speeding-bullet Jones, who was so fast he could knock you out and untie your shoelaces with the same motion etc etc etc . so i asked a different questioncrusader wrote:Of course, Jones is on the serious decline at that point. The answer to that is so blindingly obvious - I think that's why nobody is bothering to ask it.crusader wrote:Of course, Jones is on the serious decline at that point. The question is could Calzaghe beat the pre heavyweight Jones.
Jones looked dreadful during the publicity shots for the Tarver fight, I remember in the promo poster you could clearly see Jones Jr had bitch tits - something he had never had before. He had clearly screwed up his metabolism by exercising whilst dieting and trying to denature the protein stores in his body. Jones always had an incredible muscular physique, against Tarver he looked slightly flabby, and had lost much of his muscle size and tone.
Yes, I think Calzaghe would have been able to beat that version of Jones, because Jones was clearly exhausted going into the bout.

I thought it was also pretty obvious that Calzaghe could beat the Jones that was brutally knocked out in two rounds by Tarverjamesmcdonnell wrote:The answer to that is so blindingly obvious - I think that's why nobody is bothering to ask it.crusader wrote:Of course, Jones is on the serious decline at that point. I personally believe Jones came off Roids, pre-Tarver making his testostorone levels plummet below any normal level, which in turn made him an old man 'overnight'
Re: If Calzaghe fought the Roy Jones that lost to Tarver...?
who knows. the real roy might have turned up next time - might just have been an off night. jones had an excuse, with the weight loss.Counter-puncher wrote:joe would have taken the fight after the 1st Tarver fight tho barn?
the money was in tarver-jones 2 - Superman angle - which also did well on PPV. joe was pretty much on the outside looking in at this point.
joe would have had to do something of the calibre of beating lacy, earlier on. then he'd maybe have been in the mix, if willing.
