I'd like to see Arreola win. Man,would that shake things up.

I'm with you, Rog. I hope he can do it. It would be a nice surprise.

I don't know about surprise it will be a miracle if Arreola get passed the ramrod jab & klitschko's long front foot stance IMO it will be a repeat of the Sam Peter fight. You guys have been so long away from having a world class heavy that your clutching at straws now,Somewhere out there is a young guy about 220/240lbs that just needs dragging away from football but at the moment I'm sorry Chris Arreola is not the messiah more the fatted calf & we all know where they finish up.

The Sad Reality . . .

Football players and other big athletes have tremendous talent relating to their own sport. But they can't fight. Totally different mentality.
As far as Arreola is concerned, none of us here think of him as a great prospect, the fact is, these so-called current champs are so weak, it's hard not consider a bum like Arreola having a chance (although I think he has O chance).

Having come up in the gym seeing guys like Liston, Quarry, Ali, Frazier, Foreman, Norton, Patterson, etc. training just several feet away, I think the regulars who post here on the Classic American West Coast have a pretty good handle on who is and who is not a qualified heavyweight. We had more than one great fighter in the heavyweight division when we were active. Today the world has the Lurch brothers and Jumbo Valuev.

The big guys from other sports wash out when they have nobody running intereference for them.
Most agree that Dempsey, Foreman, Louis, Tyson, etc. would get run over on a football field.
In a fight, the football players balls turn to water as they find themselves drowning in an ass-whipping.
There may be a bonafide talent out there somewhere, but when he surfaces, who is going to teach him?
We only have a handful of credible trainers out there, and those who cater to the high-profile boxers rarely take on beginners these days.

For the record, I don't like predictions and I'm often as wrong as I am right.
However, in this one I see Arreola being defeated easily within a few short rounds. Another in a long line of failed Latino heavyweights.
We don't "clutch straws" on this thread. The guy I was responding to was a Kenny Norton sparring partner and he knows the score.
I was a Quarry stablemate and I have a clue myself. I think we are all on the same page regarding Arreola.
We'd just like to see an upset to shake up this boring division.

Mexican boxers may not represent the best of the big boys, but in the lower weight classes their talent & skill is basically unmatched in in sheer numbers.

BIRRIA

If you've never tried it,birria is a Mexican style stew made from goat. It's seasoned with tomatos and chiles.Plop corn tortillas and refries next to it and you're ready to chow down. The best way to wash it down is with a cold bottle of beer.

When we throw a party at our house in Jiquilpan my wife does most of the cooking. She wants it that way,but she'll always ask her nephew Chelis to bring over a pot of his homemade birria. It's always fresh because he'll kill a calf in the morning at the ranch and then prepare the birria. Real Mexican soul food.

Chelis and his sisters run a little taco stand in the colonia. From around dusk to around midnight they cook up the tacitos. Everybody knows where it is. If you have a taste for something, you'll probably take a stroll to that taco stand. Business is good. It's steady. The neighborhood fills their stomachs.

The food is basic and down home.Just like Jiquilpan.

Roger . . . Here is the truth. You and Maria know how to live, and have set yourself up right to do just that.
In my opinion, in this life time, you two are an ultimate success. And here is the kicker, the best is yet to come!
Your likely to live richer in retirement than you ever thought possible.

I believe this!

Rog, that's a real nice photo. I'm a fan of Birria, with lot's of tortillas, salsa, lime and cilantro. I'm a fan of happy places too. Looks like you've found your "Golden Pond".

There is no false expectation here on this thread and certainly none of us see him as the "Messiah". We've got a good grip on reality. That being said, and despite the odds, I'll be pulling for Arreola.

As someone from the opposite side of the pond from most of you guys on this thread I have two questions 1 do you object to a limey posting on here & 2 I have bought a book today about the making of the film "Raging bull" by Mike Evans have any of you read it & what did you think of it, IMO it is the finest boxing film ever produced.
I would appreciate your opinions

We don't own this thread. We keep it above the belt line with our disagreements. I haven't seen any low blows from you. As far as being a Brit? Hell,Bennie is a Englishman and a fine intelligent chap who adds a lot to the thread. We're brothers.

I was thinking about it the other day. The last time I was in London. I was in the City. Frequented a pub called the Cockpit. Every evening I'd saunter in there, buy me a cold brew, and sit at a table and share in discussions with some of the friendliest people I've ever met.

As for Raging Bull. To me, it's not only the best movie on boxing, but ,personally, the best movie ever made. Being Italian and growing up in a neighborhood like the Bronx, the film was spellbounding. The thing is,I don't think Scorsesce had to do much directing. Those greaseballs had those lines in them already.

Object? No, anyone is welcome to post on this thread. This is a group of guys that love boxing. We keep it respectful even if we might disagree on something. Although sometimes you might not know it from listening to us, we know that we (USA) don't have a monopoly on boxing, either as fighters or fans. Welcome to this thread, I'm looking forward to what you have to say. Like my dear old dad used to say"You can't have too many friends".

I read Raging Bull: My Story back in the 70's but have yet to read Mike Evans book. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. The movie was a work of art, to say the least.

Tellboy . . . You are more than welcome here, and you aren't the only Brit. We have no limitations when it comes to boxing info, old, new, International. Some of us just happen to be from the West Coast and share memories of some our mutual friends, experiences, etc. As for the Raging Bull, I thought it was a great movie, but I have yet to read the book on it's making. I do work in the film industry and have since the 70's. I did not work on that film, but know a few people that did, such as cinematographer Michael Chapman. I recall his challenges in shooting it in Black & White. You see, there are really not many cameramen or lighting directors capable of lighting black & white film as they did in the old days. Color creates it's own depth, but to achieve depth using B&W film, you need to use light and shadow, shades of gray, etc. etc. chapman did a great job, but you'll notice anything shot in B&W today lacks that crisp, hard light edge that once defined the art. My grandfather was a master of that type of lighting.

This was a challenege to Michael Chapman, it's not as simple as one would think.

Thanks Randy! I had a good time yesterday. Willie Nelson has a huge Ranch in Texas and owns an entire beach town in Hawaii, however his two sons (also musicians) are attending Loyola Marymount University near Marina Del Rey. My buddy Ralph owns a tri-plex on the Penninsula, and rents his 2br unit and single to Willie & Annie Nelson. Annie likes to have a place close to the boys when Willie's on the road. This is Willie's L.A. home. Great guy, just as you would expect. I enjoyed sitting with Willie, his son Lucas, Annie and my friend Ralph. Lucas was picking something on his guitar, he's a classic blues guitarist. Very nice people.

Have a good time with Mom, Randy! Hope her surgery goes well. My mother had her cataract surgery less than two years ago. It's all pretty routine these days.
Today my mother sees well and is comfortable. My best to you, Jeri and mom.
