I take the point about losing early on and what that does to his marketability, but I still think that a chunk of money in the bank is a good parachute

Slapsie
i understood the deal was 70k after tax, with the aba picking up the bill.

Notice Warren had given pride of place ringside seats beside him last night for Khan's amateur trainer, and wife I think. Coincidence?! :D

What allegedly or Khan? No we know the real reason why Khans opponents were avoiding his punches in the Olympics.

jesus Khan looks about 14 in that photo, is he really ready to turn pro.

I can see the arguments on both sides, but he just looks so immature. The amateur game is so different from the pro game now, and he barely has any experience even as an amateur at senior level, he could get badly upset early in his career unless they were to put him in with absolute stiffs, and what on earth is he going to learn from that.

Khan may look dazzling at amateur, but in pro terms, he is raw as sushi, most of the guys who turned pro young to great success had a wealth of gym experience as young men, Barrera, morales, Medina, all of these guys were in the gysm with grown men from an early age and were toughened by the process. Khan isn't going to get that kind of sparring, and his amateur experience will count for almost nothing. Another couple of years of training as a proper senior will give him some decent fundamentals, but I suppose you could say that it will just be two more years of bad habits he won't be able to get away with in the pro ranks.

I really am in two minds about this.

A lot of Pro's said in Boxing Monthly he should turn Pro after the 2006 games (world, european? Lol whatever)...not a bad idea...two more years at Amateur level.

that's what I think too, then he's more physically mature at 19-20. he'll have two years more senior experience too, and be a much better all around fighter. Another medal, this time a gold medal, which hopefully he gets coverage of on the beeb again.

He could do with some pro sparring in there as well, to wean him towards the professional ranks.

So the press are confirming it looks like the solution will be for Khan to box on as amateur, but on Warren pro shows, alongside Hatton and co. The ABA are apparently all for it too.

Seems weird, but It happens elsewhere, Scotland for one, so why not I guess. Wonder what type of opponents they'll get in for him?

Then turn pro after the World's, with the deal meaning Warren has first signing option. That's the idea, anyway.

Where are you taking this from? I saw something along those lines on the bbc bit today.

I think all in all that will be an excellent solution, but does that mean that he has signed for the ABA's deal, or he has signed with Warren?

this is the best of both worlds for the ABA, because it gets amateur boxing back on the road map, and could get exposure for a lot of other up and coming amateurs too. i think it's a very sensible approach where nobody loses out. If something did go wrong, allegedly would have probably copped a load of undeserved flack for putting pressure on him to turn pro, when really at the end of the day, it's Khan and his family who make the decision.

I would have worried about Khan spending two years fighting stiffs, with even then the prospect of getting upset by someone bigger and stronger. Who knows how long it will take to adapt to the pro game, there's no guarantees that olympic medals translate into world title glory.

He should stay amatuer at least for another 2 years. 17 is just too young to be turning pro. If he did he would be done by 24 probably. He would probably blow out dozens of journeymen and everyone would be calling for him to take a big step up in class. He'd do that and then against a fully grown mature pro he could come unstuck at such a young age with his body and skills not fully developed. I don't really care about the Olympics in 4 years, its more to do with him developing his skills and letting his body grow before he embarks on a pro career, he will be so much better for it. He will also face lots of different styles in the amatuers compared if he turns pro he will be facing punching bags for a few years.

Kevin Mitchell is a good example. He's clearly has a ridiculus amount to learn and will be fighting a very low class of opponent for a long time yet, he's just not ready. He could have honed his skills in the amatuers and not have had everyone badmouthing him and calling for him too step up in class when he's not ready. He will keep the hunger and motivation as an amatuer as well while he dreams of a dazzling pro career. Their is no doubt in my mind what he should do.

It was in one of the broadsheets today, Sunday Telegraph I think. Apparently he'd still get the ABA deal, but fight on SN shows. Not sure what the first option deal means - Can he can still turn down Warren at the end, if he wants?
