Mary Spencer was world champ at 66 kg and Airanne Fortin was world champ at 70 kg. I guess they will have to move up to 75 kg and box off for the chance at the Olympics. The US women will have to get a lot better if they want a chance to compete at the Olympics.boxmel wrote:Jim, doesn't one of the weight classes also include the Canadian champion Mary Spencer? I wonder just how much of a chance the U.S. women have to (1) get to the Olympics and (2) medal..... :??Interesting enough that the best women boxer in the world, Katie Taylor is 60 kg.

Recent official update on situation with Men divisions from AIBA
So until January 2010 we will proceed with old weighs. This means that the change may be included since the last continental championships in 2010 or from 1 January 2011 (which is the most logical, cos there will be enough time for fighters to train properly in the new weights for London Olympics qualifications)The AIBA Technical and Rules Commission is currently looking at different ways to reduce the men’s quota, whether it be eliminate a weight division or reduce a number of boxers across the weight divisions. The Commission will then make a proposal to the Executive Committee, who will then make the final decision. In terms of a timeline, it is hard to say at this stage but the next Executive Committee meeting will be held in January next year.
The dates for the next AIBA Congress will also be announced at this EC meeting.
The qualification process for London Olympics is also being worked on by the AIBA Technical and Rules Commission and again, they will make the proposal to the AIBA Executive Committee. We will obviously communicate all once confirmed.
