AIBA has just released its own World Rankings for the first time ever. They will use the rankings to seed the top 8 boxers in each weight category at the 2009 World Championships.
The rankings can be found at: http://www.aiba.org/en-US/news/ozqsp/ne ... /news.aspx
AIBA's New Official World Rankings
Re: AIBA's New Official World Rankings
These rankings only include points awarded for major international tournaments. They do not consider what happens in duals and domestic competitions. I'm also not sure about awarding points for the Youth tournaments. I think Michael Smith's rankings are more accurate. AIBA doesn't remove boxers when they turn pro like Smith does.
They have Joey Dawejko ranked higher than Michael Hunter even though Joey has never boxed in an international "Open class" tourney. Nick Kisner is ranked based upon his Youth tourney experience. Osmai Acosta is ranked ahead of Clemente Russo even though Russo just defeated Acosta twice in May 2009. They also have Javier Torres ranked at 91kg for Mexico even though he is now representing USA at 91+kg.
Rau'shee Warren is ranked #8 at 51kg. He is boxing at 54kg and won't be at the 2009 World Championships. Gary Russell is #29 at 54kg even though he has been pro for quite awhile.

Re: AIBA's New Official World Rankings
AIBA released World Rankings during the 1990'ies but stopped in 1999. Those rankings were actually better than these as they not only included Olympics, World and Continental Championships but also the major international tournaments around the world.Dennis wrote:AIBA has just released its own World Rankings for the first time ever.
Re: AIBA's New Official World Rankings
I shouldn't have said ever. They should include more tournaments, but that would be a lot more work.
Re: AIBA's New Official World Rankings
The best ranks (From subjective point of view) were those that was produced by our fellow member ABAboxing. Few years ago, around Athens Olympics me and him prepare very nice system, based on the way of tennis rankings and updated monthly. We include not only Major chanmpionships as Olympics, Worlds and COntinental championships, but also every senior international tournament in the world (they were rated in 5 different classes. Every tournament may change his position in those Classes every year, depending of the quality of event, popularity and a lot of other factors.). We do not include youth championships.

Those were Michael Smith's rankings that ABA used before the website disappeared on day, wasn't it?ogii3 wrote:The best ranks (From subjective point of view) were those that was produced by our fellow member ABAboxing. Re: AIBA's New Official World Rankings
According to Darren (ABABoxing here on the forum), Mike Smith helped put the rankings together that he released. That's what Mike told me as well and he said that Darren took the ababoxing site down. Per Darren on this forum: "The new Junior World Independent Amateur Boxing Rankings for the month of July are now displayed on the web-site. http://www.ababoxing.com ABA Boxing wishes to thank Mike Smith for his hard work in compiling the Rankings & welcomes him to the team." and "I can only answer questions on the Senior rankings which i put together.I have passed on your comments to Mike who creates the Junior and Cadet rankings and wait for a reply from him, either he will post his answer here or pass it on to me for me to post."ogii3 wrote:Never heart of Michael Smith before i see you repost his ranks

Tremendous work you did Ogii. Why did you quit? That would be the perfect AIBA rankings.ogii3 wrote:Never heart of Michael Smith before i see you repost his ranks

Re: AIBA's New Official World Rankings
Santi, very long story, short version i have a lot of duties in my newspaper, as commentator and some other thinks:) You remember well the days of EABA web page and Olympic boxing forum, which became the after work friends bar for all of us that love the sport. For me it was amasing feeling to see some of you sharing their opinions at the forum on the hotest thread in amateur boxing :)
DC, i never was in touch with Mr. Smith and lost contact with Darren when he closed his site. Since 2006 i lost the passion of spending and dedicating a huge part of my free time to amateur boxing. Darren really wants to make his web page the leading place for amateur boxing news. He improved a lot the system that we worked for a lot of time. It;s very tough work to calculate hundreds of boxers from all around the word, to check the quality of tournaments etc.....
The old AIBA PR/Media relatons and specially the big bosses as Chowdhry/Doganeli/Abiev etc do not care for public image of the sport. It was almost imposible to find results from some tournaments, but with the guys from Olympic forum we work out the way to share info from all around the world. During that time Janusz made his amasing web page Amateur boxing results and started to colect the precious information from the history of amateur boxing. AIBA must give him his greatest medal for all the thousends of hours that he spend to collect info and results.
Just to conclude, now it's very different. Richard Baker is very capable person, who develops day by day AIBA PR and media communication as it may be easy seen on their web page and on their big championships.
