Yeah, there was the thread a few weeks ago about journeyman and some think they are valuable to the British scene and some didn't, but I'm sorry to say Ellis has been a heavyweight joke for some time now.

Him appearing against someone like Lance Whittaker is a complete waste of everyone's time and money.

The BBBofC should haul themselves up before themselves.

Ellis has either got to be matched at 4/6 round level or revoke his licence. They can't keep allowing these farces to take place.

I had him down to lose in the 2nd. My thinking was. He making the effort to go all the way over there, then he would atleast make some sort of effort to atleast go a couple rounds .. I should have gone with my initial prediction of tko rnd1. I wonder if Whitakers people think he was money well spent? pretty sure the paying public that night won`t have.

exactly the same prediction myself. was going to go for KO1 but thought nah surely he will stretch to 2 rounds but no. so will have to settle for 7 points instead of 13!

Whitaker's people must not have heard or seen the complete non effort he gave against Fury. Ellis needs to pack the game in because he's just embarrassing himself.

LOL this line from the report - "Ellis provided absolutely no opposition" - I could literally have written that before the fight even started.

His license needs to be taken away. He has no business fighting anymore. At least there are some bums out there who actually put in some effort before being knocked out or give rounds. Ellis just goes down the second the bell rings.

The guys a complete fraud. He was a good amateur and thats it. The only reason hes fighting is because hes skint.

Id be embaressed to show my face about if I put up a televised perfomance like the ones he has of late, and all he says is 'well I got paid this much for fighting so and so'.

If you look, Ellis didn't even throw one punch against Fury. The guy is a glorified bum.

If you're questioning whether Zeljko Mavrovic, who Lennox Lewis said was his toughest fight, is world class, perhaps you should abandon boxing and start watching competitive walking or figure skating?

Sadly for Zeljko he was forced to retire before he had the chance to prove himself at world level. Brave defeats doesn't necessarily equate to being world class - he could have been, but he never really proved it. He hardly fought the elite of European boxing when he was EBU champion - would have been nice to have seen him against the likes of Akinwande, Hide etc.

Ellis is currently suspended in the UK. He was a very good fighter Mathew but he's cashing in right now. Silly move IMO I really don't understand why anyone would want to do this for a living but when your used to doing a bit of training and fighting for a few minutes and adding at least 3 zero's to your bank balance then its an unfortunate 'easy' way of making a few quid.

Real shame. Ellis was a good fighter.

They all fought for world titles and were domestic and European champions. The point I was clearly making though is that Francis only got stopped at a much higher level and would still take them down the track a bit, which is in stark contrast to Ellis.
I feel you are trying to split hairs here

You can't compare Julius Francis and Ellis, they are poles apart.

Julius would have also stopped Ellis in double quick time.

Yes I am I guess, your point is very valid - Ellis and Francis are poles apart. Just this definition of "world class" is a bit of a pet hate of mine. Seems so many have different meanings, My definition has been criticised for allowing too many "non world class" fighters in it. My definition is someone with some solid EBU (top 20) level wins who looks like they could win a world title (big 4) not just fight for it. I classed someone like Oktay Urkal as world class, cause he was capable at EBU level and looked capable of beating Vivian Harris when they fought (I know he didn't but he should have got the decision IMO) - I got criticised for this. Well, even got criticised for calling Arturo Gatti world class!!!

So hearing the names... Scott Welch and world class - kind of infuriates me.

Fair comment, and I agree wholeheartedly about what you said about world class.

I agree. Its also harsh to call him a bum etc.
But the board really need to question what he is providing the game if he does carry on. If he continues to perform .. or should that be - not perform - then it would be best for all involved, if he wasn`t re-licensed.

I remember him when he first came on the scene. Dressed up like James Bond. Really putting a show on for the paying public. It will be sad if he is only remembered for showings like the Fury and Whitaker nonsense :(

I respect any fighter that gets in the ring but it galls me to see it when a professional boxer makes no effort whatsoever. Ellis-Fury was the absolute nadir for this as far as I'm concerned - face first, no attempt to throw, block, or avoid a single punch. I would like to hope a fighter would have more self-respect and respect for the fans than to do this but I accept that they may need the money. As such I think it's up to promoters not to use such fighters as it is a blatant fleecing of the fans.

It is particularly galling with Mathew Ellis given the frankly absurd hype his career was launched with. He had good amateur credentials and should at least be able to give somebody a workout.

If he wanted to- even now he probably could. He's got/had a dynamite left hook. He's about as interested in boxing as I am in goldfish collecting.

Sorry mate but 'big 4'? So Mavrovic can't be called world class because he was a true fighter who challenged the most dangerous heavyweight in the world for his title & gave him a very hard nights work, yet Akinwande and Hide won WBO belts fighting absolute tomato cans and are somehow credible?

I respect a man fighting Lennox Lewis for the title than all the Akinwandes, Hides, wladimir Klitsckos, John Ruiz et al in the world, and indeed any paper titlist.

The Heavyweights might be a tad different, cause the WBO didn't "catch up" for ages. There is no way I'd say Herbie Hide was proven world class. Its only really since Lewis' retirement where the WBO caught up.

Excluding Hide - the rest ARE more proven at world level than Mavrovic. Ruiz might not have had the opportunity to fight the #1 Heavyweight, but he beat the then #2 (who also drew and ran Lewis very close).

You saying they all would have not jumped at the chance of fighting Lewis??? Mavrovic got the opportunity - well done him, and he did very well in the fight, lasting the distance (losing a lopsided decision) - did he deserve the opportunity??? Possibly, but there were more deserving fighters... and was Lewis' the number #1 Heavy at the time? arguable.

I said "someone with the capabilties of beating one of the big 4 champions" - although I conceed at the time - late 90's... there was only 2 Heavyweights worth a toss (arguable on Double M) - could Akinwande, Ruiz, Wlad etc beaten Holyfield in 1999 - well the weakest one of them did. Herbie Hide... no chance. Mavrovic... I think he would have been to limited.

Shall we start praising Howard Clarke as a world class fighter for giving it ago against Fernado Vargas, and redicule the likes of Daniel Santos and Dzindiruk?
