I think Frank's response underlines the point I was making earlier.
Dean is in the minority.

Us 'wannabies' merely love the sport, we (the majority of us) dont make any money from it, certainly contribute to it attending shows etc...and post (mostly honest, if not always eloguently worded) opinions.

We have (generally) no axe to grind. We praise each other, promoters, fighters, networks just as much as we criticise.
yeah how the heck are we "wannabes" when we enjoy following the sport

And that is completely fair comment that I'm sure will be supported by the overwhelming majority of posters on here.
Completely ironic, too, seeing as he sits about 5metres from BC every day...

Fact is, Powell's comment that forums are killing boxing was moronic. I think we can all agree it made no sense whatsoever. We may disagree what prompted the comment, personally I think it is because anyone interested in boxing reads stuff online, and eventually finds places like this and gets better understanding of the sport and what is or isn't a mismatch, shite card etc. In a nutshell, fans are better informed these days and guys like Powell can't kid people no more.

Yeah this is the nail on the head

The likes of Sports Network were taking the piss out of the sport with some of their antics

Like trying to coax Erza Sellers out of the old peoples home to fight Enzo Maccarenelli until the BBBC rejected it...............one of first times I have ever heard the BBBC actually reject a opponnet - I mean even Bobby Gunn was allowed to fight Enzo.

Then they were charging pay per view for Khan a Commonwealth Champion againt Bedis Presscott..................I mean when have you ever saw such greed in boxing......................a Commonwealth Champion on Pay Per View !!!!!!

Sports Network got what they deserved in that fight when it went horribly wrong and their Golden Goose Khan got smashed in 1 round !!!!!

But they still kept charging pay per view for his fights after that !!!!!!

Also all the shit mundane undercards that fill up the bulk of the shows, etc.

It seems that Sports Network are the ones who are gonna dislike these forums the most because they are the ones who kid the public the most with their crap and their obsession with all these mickey mouse titles

So they are the ones who are gonna be exposed the most and people who are getting into boxing are gonna read these forums and qucikly wise up to the con job going on...............

I cant see the likes of David Haye and Carl Froch minding the forums so much - they are real fighters who want to be the best -and fight the best :TU:

I dont think Sports Network are at fault here. They are running a business and trying to make a profit, they have people to pay and Khan is one of the best known athletes in the country so why not capitalise. The public dont have a gun to their heads, they dont have to buy the fight on PPV, if the public thinks its a good fight they will buy it, if they think its a stinker they wont. Remember, boxing is aimed at the masses, not just us Boxing bookworms on here. If the Business and Sport of Boxing were reliant on just people like us it would have been extinct long ago. People like Warren and his colleagues have to cater for the general sports fan as well as Boxing affectionados. Thats what makes the business so tough. I think the Boxers turned promoters will begin to find that out, at the peril of their finances.

sorry fraink/FTM - didn't know you were dyslexic

i would say few of us are wannabes - we just have no place else to talk about the fights

apart from the one time i was in a south yorkshire barber shop and we all talked about chad dawson - but that was a one off

one day i will have my hair cut and an old man will be talking about paul williams

nail in the head?

nail in the fvcking eyeball, more like!

so Boxingchat sits reet near DP, discrediting rival fighters and ex "Sports Network" stars - ha.

if potential investers and backers read these forums, and our comments are damaging, then what are we supposed to say - are we supposed to act the diplomat, or perhaps do the Internet equivalent of shrugging our shoulders and writing: "That's boxing" OR "Look, don't you understand? it's a bidness!"

I'm not joking, you could be the most perfect fighter ever and yet still people would slag the crap out of you in the media and on the internet forums etc. so "why worry about it?" would be my view on it if I were in that position, it just isn't worth the hassle.

You are entitled to your view, but the issue here is whether or not BoxRec forum and ones like it are "killing the sport". The matchmaker of Sports Network (or whatever they are calling themselves this month) said in the trade paper that this is the case, and hence people are entitled to say "Oui! Powell! No!"
I think forums like Boxrec have rejuvinated the interest in Boxing of long term followers like myself who had become disillusioned and ambivalent to the sport. I think Boxing fans are a passionate lot and are very protective of the sport due to it being percieved as being marginalised. This sometimes results in heated and nasty comments about individuals which are over the top. I think most posters on here have said something which on reflection they could have put in better terms. I think there are some people with very thin skins who cannot take any form of critiscism, but sometimes its best to follow Duffs rule as quoted by Powell in his interview - "keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut". I try to wait five minutes before responding to a post, as I think it is best to remember that one thing you would say to a group of fellow fans at a fight or in a pub, may not be appropriate for a forum, where it is in writing and there for quite a few people to see it. I also try to refrain from personal insults. With emotions running high I accept this is sometimes difficult to avoid, but the aspect of personal insults and worse in writing is one of the biggest downsides of online boxing dialogue.

Mr Maloney likes to call us "Anoraks" - he thoroughly enjoys winding people up!! - seems sometimes he reacts adversly when he gets some of that banter back.

But lets get back to Dean Powell - as stated in the other thread just got off the phone to him - he explained himself and I think I did likewise with regards to my adverse reaction to the comment about these forums - this forum in particular is a very good forum indeed - I will disagree with Dean a tadge in that I personally think its extremely well moderated - its difficult to know when to let threads run or when to simply close them - I love a good ruck and debate and will always look for an angle to do so - so its frustrating if a particular thread is close but understand more than most the moderators have a dam difficult job.

Different people have different intellect levels and different ways of expressing themselves - it should not just be left to the clever ones to express their views just because they can do so with big words that I do not understand. :TU:
Yes i do regularly read these forums, and i do comment and react to anything on here that i dislike or like. Just because i earn my living from Boxing does not mean i cannot respond to adverse write comments or reports i read on the internet. What is the difference between me writing my opinions or you wannabies writing yours, and just for the record i do believe that internet and its chat forums are the lifeline of boxing as the national press has not seemed to want to cover the sport or the business of professional boxing. All i ask is that if you do attack me in the forum please just make sure you spell my name right!!!
Despite the bullsh*t you give by the very virtue you call fans "wannabies" shows in my opinion the true contempt you hold for fans - unless they are kissing your arse you are not interested and call those fans wannabies or anoraks!!! :shame:

Time and time again you let your guard down and show yet again in my opinion your true colours - if you were to hold the fans etc etc and these forums in high regard you would not come out with the statements you do!!!

Butt out?? - I quite like him, he is a decent holding midfielder, will do ok in the Championship.

Surely this is a forum where I can express my opinions openly?

The very thing you have been arguing so strongly for??

Mate - its an expression, bit like fella etc etc

Not disputing you spoke to Mr Powell - its your self promotion of this which is a little annoying

Loosen up

No offence meant :box:

Wrists needs to be reminded these forums have been going for years - I will write things as I see it - if people dont like they can **** ***!!

Simple as!!! - now be a good chap and contribute to the thread in hand instead of "spud baiting" - leave that to our friend Wrists!!! :TU:

Anyhow come on ftmpress - I am disaapointed you have not started spitting feathers yet and coming out with your insults - I note you can have your opinion but the fans cannot have theirs - unless of course they agree with you!!!

Baiting?

Apologies Andrew but I'm not a sad, fat, has been almost soldier who has achieved nothing in his life apart from holding the spit bucket for someone that holds you in contempt.

Mods: I'm jetlagged and in a bad mood, please delete (and give whatever warning you need to) and let's move on.

Another point is - it is fantastic and always has been many personalities from the boxing world visit these forums - as long as they do not expect to be treated with kid gloves then things will be great - it will however be a very sad day if boxing personalities bleat and disagree to the moderators if there is something they do not quite like.

I am a terrible cynic - with the realisation of personalities that these forums do have value and contribute a great deal to boxing - it will be those personalities who will try to dictate terms on what can and cannot be written on the forums.

Boxrec is a fantastic forum because posters start a thread about whatever they want - the only ones that seem to be closed are a about a certain promoter who crys to his "In house" due to his sensitivity
