Kell Brook says he is ready for the likes of Cotto

Post by gemmell »

British sensation Kell Brook says he's ready for the likes of top pound-for-pounder Miguel Cotto right now - and he'll prove it by knocking out Michael Jennings.

The pair meet in a mouthwatering clash at the Liverpool Echo Arena on October 30, with Brook's British welterweight title on the line.

And the champion has vowed to do a better job on Jennings than Cotto did earlier this year.

The Puerto Rican halted Jennings in five rounds in a clash for the WBO World Welterweight title in the States and now has a mega-fight against Manny Pacquiao on November 14 in Las Vegas.

But KO artist Brook, who has won all four of his British title fights with early stoppages, has vowed to blast Jennings out even quicker.

"I am ready for Miguel Cotto now," said 23-year-old Special K. "I am going to do a better performance than Cotto, I am going to get Jennings out of there before Cotto did.

"I am on a high at the moment, but no one has really brought the best out of me yet, and I promise everyone that haven't seen anything yet.

"I am a top level fighter and I am ready for the best out there - I know what I can do in the gym.

"People have seen the guys that I have been fighting and have been saying that I am going to beat them on points, but I have been doing a job on them early.

"I am ready to go to the next level and I am ready to go to the top."

With his third-round victory against Michael Lomax in Manchester in July, Brook secured a Lonsdale belt outright in just his 20th fight.

And he says that there's no way he's giving up his British title to Jennings.

"I could have by-passed Jennings, but I've always wanted this fight," said Brook.

"When I first turned professional Michael was one of the top guys out there, and I've always wanted to fight him.

"He's a good kid and I haven't got a bad word to say about him, but he's going to get beat.

"He's a great technical boxer and his name has always been up there, but he's no threat to me, no threat at all.

"When I was young I dreamed about winning the British title, and it's a dream come true to actually have the belt outright so I can show my kids and my grandkids.

"It's the best belt in the world and it's not going anywhere." Is "special K" ready for cotto??????? tell me what you think

Twat!

With the way he throws his right with the chin in the air it would probably take just one Cotto hook to send him on his way

I liek him but cant be having this talk. A current doemstic level operator talking about being ready for a bona-fide, no discussion, no arguements world class welterweight

Brook's level of opposition in British title fights has been poor: Barrie Jones, Kevin McIntyre (good), Stuart Elwell (very poor), Michael Lomax.

I think that he was expected to knock all or most of them out, so I think he is talking nonsense here.

He should be looking at a European title shot if he beats Jennings, certainly not taking on top P4P fighters like Cotto.

Nice ambition, best of luck to him.

Imo he underestimates the step up from domestic to world class big time but stranger things have happened. Needs to make the step up in stages and fight some fringe guys first, welter is loaded with talent for him

one of the reasons i'm not that excited about brook is the division he's in.

certified murderer's row of top opposition to fight if he wants to go anywhere near the top. :o

As much as I think Brook is a bit premature in declaring himself ready for the likes of Cotto, I do think he'll do a number on Jennings and stop him around the halfway mark.

I go for Jennings on points. Brook is impressive but Jennings has mixed in higher circles and is durable with amazing stamina and good skills. He is slick, humble, hard-working and gritty. I'm a big fan of his in and out of the ring.

If Brook stops him then fair play, but that doesn't make him ready for Cotto. It would be a BIG performance and he should look to Europe and a few lesser American and foreign fighters if he beat Mick - perhaps world 20-30 - before going near the Cotto's of this world.

But I still go for Mick Jennings to use his experience......we shall see.

aye agreed if he stops Jennings impressively it lays down a very big marker and means IMO top 10-20 ranked fighters should be in the offing afterwards...

Absolutely, and don't get me wrong, Brook has been a breath of fresh air...

I wish him well, if he hammers Jennings it will be a real statement, but Mick is no mug.

Jennings is a tough fight for him as it is, never mind someone like Miguel Cotto.

The lad has talent but is some way off even considering challenging Cotto et al.

Blowing away Stuart Elwell is not the same as blowing away Zab Judah.

In what way has Brook been a breath of fresh air?

He has been blowing away low level domestic fighters. Jones and Elwell were not even in the British top 10 Welterweights when he beat them.

Bit extreme. He's a young undefeated prospect who's got ambition to get in with world champions. Thats the attitude we should have from our young fighters. Not saying he'll win but you never know in boxing, Cotto's is a bit overrated, his stamina is a bit pish, his defense and chin are shakey and he may well get ruined by Pacquaio.

No Cotto would embarass Brook at the moment he is still at Domestic level and Cotto has been at world level for years I think Brook should be moved onto Euro level and then world level

Here we go again, kick our best.
He's young and raw when it comes to the PR side of the business but he's got to learn.
He isn't exactly the first to proclaim himself as the second coming, is he ?
I know that the kid is actually quite shy, so others will be pulling the strings on the PR side.
He is an exceptional talent.
I hope he makes it to the very top.

I actually agree with all of that, but despite the protestations that are bound to come, I'm convinced he's on the way down - the manner of the defeat to Cotto must be hard to take psychologically and when you're given such a harsh reality-check regarding your world-level ambitions it must affect you.
That, coupled, with Brook's showings of late (the manner in which he won rather than the roll-call of opponents) is why I'm seeing the stoppage for the up-and-comer.
Let's also not forget that Mike struggled with Young Mutley, and Brook is a league above the West Midlander imo.

Fair enough@ PN

I personally dont think Cotto is overrated and I dont think Pac takes him, never mind ruining him

Even if he was vastly overrated he is still several levels above Brook. Do you think Brook is gonna land that telegraphed straight right without eating one counter left hook from Cotto? It would be even less compettive tnan the Jennings fight. I woulnt even give him a punchers chance

Ambition is one thing, shooting your mouth off is another

If this was Jamie Moore talking about fighting Paul Williams I would still say JM will be pasted but at least he is proven european leevl competitor who has in a way earnt the right to call out the champs

Brook has not.

Let's hope Brook's management team feel differently in respect of Kell being ready for the like of Cotto now! If they do not & Brook is put in there with a guy like Cotto, it could have disasterous effects on the remainder of his career!

Brook is young, has time on his side, so why rush things? If Brook gets Jenning's out of there in quicker time than Cotto that does not mean shit. Remember, Cotto fought Michael first & defeated him before Brook has even had the chance to!

Besides, if Cotto defeats Pacquiao, guys like Kell Brook will not be on Miguel's radar!
