Brian Hughes is one of the sport's genuine good-guys, who puts all his efforts into getting his lads leading a more positive life. To him, I think it's more important than having a champion. Having said that, he's done a great job with Robin Reid, and hopefully another major fight will come Robin's way. But Brian really is one of boxing's unsung heroes. All power to him, because of him, many lads have led improved, better lives, and have made a bit of money too. You can't ask for more than that. Well done Brian.

He's also written some excellent books on Jock McAvoy, Tommy Taylor, Willie Pep, Jackie Brown and Johnny King

He's seems like a lovely bloke, I phoned him once to ask him a few questions, and I was on the phone to him for over an hour just talking boxing.

Who is in his team? I know of Reid, McDonagh, Doherty, Jennings, Lockett and Matthew Hall. Are there any more? Doesn't Barnes box out of his gym? Looking at this plus the influence he's had on Michael Gomez and earlier with Pat Barrett, he must be one of the most prolific trainers in the UK?

The plaudits Brian has received for his work as a boxing trainer, social mentor, writer and family man are truly befitting. For those who may ponder his greatness, I would say this: Underneath the jovial, humourous exterior lies a man with a fighter's heart - game, resilient, humble and merciful. Those four qualities are what I believe make him the man he is.
