Not for us boxing gurus but for joe public.
Mikey will be doing the same thing in the coming weeks.
Some boxers are good at it, some have to work at it.
Of course we've never heard a boxer at Kel's current level proclaim themselves as ready to take on the World, have we ?
This kid is our best prospect by a mile.
Good luck to him.
Exactly what do you want him to say 'oh I dont think I could beat cotto and Im not sure I can beat jennings either'.

The difference is Kells only just started bigging himself up, where as most other boxers like Khan bragged they could beat muhammed ali before they'd even stepped through the ropes as a pro.

PLUS Kell actually has the talent to go all the way. :TU:

Is he a bit of a looker? He might be willing to take on a challenge but his level of opposition has been average.

No, I don't really agree with 3 of your 4 points.

Neither Minter or Stracey are in my rankings.

Yes he is. Im not being biased but hes one of the best looking boxers around. :TU:

Cotto isn't great because he lost to Margarito? Biggest load of tripe I have heard in a long time.

I can't imagine a situation where Roberto Durna, Sugar Ray Leonard or Thomas Hearns would lose to Margarito

We're talking about GREAT fighters here.

I must say that I think Cotto has some way to go - needs the scalps of some more 'great' or at least very good fighters before I would give him a billing reserved for only the very best of all

In today's scene, Cotto is definitely great. By that, I mean that he is one of the best around.

Exactly, lads. I never said he was an all-time great, I never even insinuated it. But if anyone wants to argue with me that Cotto isn't a great fighter in today's boxing world, then I will be happy to argue with them that they're massively wrong.

That was at 140lbs. He was dead at the weight - he would struggle against anyone in the top ten at light welterweight. But he's now a 147lb fighter and the difference in his chin, which was his main problem at 140lbs, which has massively cleared up.

Hearns would have all sorts of trouble against Margarito actually. Busy, tall, high workrate, pressure, solid chin - Hearns could be pressured.

Duran was small, but probably could have out-boxed him. SRL would have humiliated him with a clinical stick and move performance.

It looks like I am in the minority here, but I thought Cotto fought well in the conditions against Clottey. A lot of people, me included, thought Clottey was all wrong for Cotto - he's got a good chin, works a lot, has a very nice defence and can whack a bit. I still picked Cotto to win, but knew he would struggle. I also believe Cotto would've won wider if he fought with two eyes - that cut was one of the worst I have seen. So under the circumstances, Cotto fought as well as he was going to with that cut, IMO. I had Cotto winning 114/113 too. Clottey could've won if he didn't down his workrate in the last few rounds, but he didn't, and Cotto won. End of story, mate.

Image

Name me a great fighter (this era) who doesn't struggle from time to time.

Pacquiao did with Marquez, Mayweather jr did with Castillo and de la Hoya, Calzaghe struggled with BHOP, Mosley was getting beat going into the 12th against Mayorga, ect, ect. My point is, don't judge Cotto because he struggled against someone who is very decent.

And Cotto being downed by Torres, buzzed by Malignaggi, hurt by Corley is irrelevant to me, as I put it down to stupidly trying to make 140lbs. You don't see Cotto being hurt anywhere near as much as he was at light welterweight, because he struggled with that weight.

So let me rephrase, Miguel Cotto is a great welterweight fighter, and was a very decent 140lb operator.

I think he's getting to a similar stage where he's weakening himself to make welterweight. What is the contracted weight for Cotto-Pac? isn't it Manny-weight, 145-pounds? reckon Cotto is bringing the same trouble on himself all over again, though this time the money will be well worth it.

In their mutual injury fight, I had Cotto losing to Clottey.

I have watched that fight a few times, and Clottey was looking to get Cotto DQ'ed a few times, and that's why he kept flinging himself to the floor. The round where Cotto put Clottey down, he was 'injured' for about 30 seconds, limped around a little, and then won the next few rounds. I don't know how an bad injury affects you, but if you watch that fight again, Clottey does do quite well after he's put down by Cotto in that 5th round. Clottey lost the fight in the last 4 rounds, not before it, and definitely not in the 5th or 6th.

No disrespect, I just don't agree with you there, mate.

By todays standards, Cotto is a great fighter - agree with the majority on that.

Look at names on his resume and that shows you what type of fighter he is.

http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?ca ... n_id=33535

Boxing would be alot better and fulfilling if other boxers took his approach, too much emphasis on the big '0'.

Not saying he is better than Duran, SRL, Tommy Hearns, Wilfredo Benitez etc, but time will tell. Some more top fights and we can see how he stands :)

I like his style and his attitude.

I'm not sure anyone who doesn't think Cotto is a great fighter can be taken seriously. It really is a ridciolous - and bordeline insulting - notion to suggest otherwise

It matters not anyway, because great or not one counter left from Cotto and it will be all she wrote for Brook
