Marvis Frazier at Cruiser

Post by actjac »

He fought most of his bouts at around 200 lbs. He beat some very good boxers and lost bad to a couple of legendary heavyweights. How would he have competed at cruiserweight?

Interesting. And who exactly at the CW limit during that period had markedly better skills than Frazier, who had very good speed and head movevemt and a nearly perfect amatuer record? As a pro he beat Broad, Bugner, Smith and Tillis so his skills must have been damn good since all of those guys (except Bugner) were very hard punchers.

Well you did name arguably the 3 best CW's of the decade. And would have to say that I would favor Qawi and the rather green Holy over Marvis, but Deleon would have been steam rolled. Also, I think Marvis would have been very competitive with Qawi and the young Holy.

Larry Holmes kicked the shit out of Frazier. Back then he came into the fight with only 10 bouts behind him and to be honest who did he fight? you would have thought his father (Joe) would have taken his time with Marvis schooling him and getting the right fights for him. That was the downfall of Marvis. Larry Holmes was asking the ref to stop the fight I believe, it was where Apollo Creed in the Rocky movie got the move from, swinging his hand and nailing the punch, signalling the ref to jump in.

At that time Larry Holmes was the best heavyweight in the world and no one could touch him, so its suprising that Marvis got his chance with only 10 previous fights and no national title behind him.

Mind you years later Mike tyson kicked the shit out of him as well!!

Marvis had a name and had just beaten a few other good names in am star James Broad (the only am to beat Marvis) and Joe Bugner. I'm sure Holmes and his people recognized it as the mis-match that it was, but the fight could easily be sold due to the Frazier name. Unfortunately, as you noted, Joe should not have allowed this fight to happen, but sometimes a father can't see reality.

BTW, the Rocky movie was several years before this fight.

- Who, Mr. Larry or Marvis?

Wait, let me check box rec........BOTH!!!!!

All's good that ends good when Tyson as the new sheriff arrives to clean up all the title predenders and ABC cross dressers, but how quickly modern fans have forgotten that Mr. Larry was fighting Marvis specifically because he wouldn't unify against the other WBA champs and wouldn't fight his WBC mandatories.

No one could touch Mr. Larry because he refused to enter the ring against them unless they were certified soft touches with little experience.
