Woods and Cloud make the weight
Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
I've got to say some of the comments here are way off!
In retrospect, the year out for Cloud may have effected his timing and sharpness which probably prevented him from a stoppage win although my prediction of an 8th rd stoppage nearly came true. How was he wild? i thought Clouds shot selection was very good and i like how he went to Woods body to bring his hands down and actually imposed his Fight plan rather than allowing Woods to do his.
Woods has an super human chin, when exactly has he been stopped or knocked out before apart from RJJ? this was the closest he's ever come to being knocked out and took far more punishment than the RJJ stoppage loss which in retrospect was probably stopped too early even though he had no chance in that fight.
Sure those 40 year old boxers that Dawson has been Fighting are very good but he could have had 6 Fights in a row against 40 plus fighters in: Glen Johnsn, Tarver, Tarver, Johnson, Bernard Hopkins and RJJ
He needs to Fight some young hungry Fighters like CLOUD and PASCAL soon who can fight 3 mins a rd.

Ditto! Its my own fault as I just presumed the fight would be on saturday, even more-so with it being a world title fight! Just shows that you can never follow this sport too closely! Lolsteve689 wrote:I got caught out too and thought it was Saturday night not Friday

Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
Which exciting young fighters had Cloud fought? They even said during the commentary that Cloud said he had been inactive for a year because he didn't want to risk his ranking. Hardly the actions of some all-conquering future star. He threw a lot of punches and essentially overwhelmed the older man. However, many of Cloud's punches were wide and there didn't seem to be much thought or tactics, other than throw lots of hard punches. Woods found him quite easily, how would a better younger fighter have done?exittored wrote:I've got to say some of the comments here are way off!

Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
Yes i agree he shouldn't have been out for a year but once he secured his World title shot shot a year ago he was waiting for Chad Dawson to fight him who chose to give up the title than face him so that tells you everything about Dawson!Which exciting young fighters had Cloud fought? They even said during the commentary that Cloud said he had been inactive for a year because he didn't want to risk his ranking. Hardly the actions of some all-conquering future star. Cloud will fight any guy at Light Heavyweight but none of the so called names want to face him, too much of a big risk for a low reward at this moment even though CLOUD is a bigger draw and more loved by the boxing and general public than Hopkins, Dawson, Tarver and Johnson. HBO and Showtime need to sign him up and start promoting him now rather than a negative un-exciting fighter like Dawson
Well he threw over 1000 punches over the 12 rds, of cause some of them are gonna be Wide! alot of Calzaghe punches were wide but the point is he keeps the pressure on a Fighter and when your throwing they dont usually throw back.
I'm actually glad he got hit by Woods, my only question mark about him has been his chin and it stood up for all 12 rds. He's always gonna be a Fighter who can be hit but there isnt many Light Heavyweights out there who will take the Punishment Woods took and still be standing.
Anyway whilst DAWSON is on his Veteran Tour of Light Heavies, i hope CLOUD takes care of CAMPILLO, ERDEI and PASCAL over the next year and puts the pressure on Dawson to man up and Fight him.

Gutted - but hey thats boxing.
Clinton Woods has had a fantastic career - he has achieved where many others have failed - I hope he retires and enjoys life with his family.
There is no need to go down to domestic level and I am being told he will not consider it.

Hello Gomez,
Nah mate you got it wrong in Clinton Woods case with regards "sausage and mash".
Whilst no matter who we are we always want more money in life - however to get it - Clinton does not need to depend on boxing - he has looked after himself with regards money and has a lovely wife who has her head screwed firmly on her shoulders - she has always worked and in addition Clinton is a grafter behind the scenes too and as such he could go back to the building trade and do his plastering or he might have something else on his mind.
Clinton is one of the most sensible blokes I have met - he realises his age and if he had age on his side as he did in the past he would have another pop at titles - but he has been a champion at all levels - I do not see what the point is in going over old ground if he has already proved himself - you state money - I say I know Clinton and his mrs and they have looked after themselves so that takes out that stumbling block or temptation to carry on.

Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
If Clinton returns to the domestic scene then it is only for the money it's that simple!! He has had a great career and has beaten some good guys!! I don't think anyone thought he'd get as far as he did after the Starie fight so a big well done to him!!
I consider him a good British fighter who deserves an awful lot of respect..
As for Cloud I never see him beating Dawson or Hopkins BUT I see him playing a part in the mix up!! Him and Pascal would be guarenteed fireworks..

Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
Well maybe we could see a triple title fight between Woods and Cleverly, the EBU title must be vacant as Juergen Braehmer has won the interim WBO title.
Of course Woods would need a longish layoff to recover and train, but maybe a triple title showdown could tempt him to stay on in the game

Hey SpudHello Gomez,
Nah mate you got it wrong in Clinton Woods case with regards "sausage and mash".
Your man Clinton impressed me with his bravery last night, full props to him and even though i'm a big CLOUD fan and made up about his World title win, i'm glad Woods still went the full 12 rds.
So what is your honest assessment of CLOUD considering you were telling us how great Woods was looking in training.

Decent explosive fighter - would love to see him in with Dawson - that would be a good fight.

Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
I thought Cloud would win he looks a very good prospect. I really wanted Woods to win at the highest level he seems to come up wanting skill wise but nobody can question his chin and bravery he is a warrior if he continue's it will be as a domestic fighter I would like to see him fight Cleverly to really test him

I think Woods would give anyone at world level a decent fight even after last night. Even though i had Glencoffe Johnson beating him in their first 2 fights, i had Clinton winning the last 3 rds to win their 3rd meeting and that to me was the best win of his Career considering that Version of Johnson beat RJJ, Tarver and imo and many others deserved at least a draw against Dawson.
As for Cloud, i'd like to see him make a couple of defences to keep him active and work on some defensive improvements and than he'd be more than ready to take on Dawson who i think is over-rated and would have a nightmare against someone like Cloud who fights for 3 mins and thows 100 punches a round.
Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
it was a crap decision to keep cloud inactive, really bad. but it paid off with the "world title" opportunity. for a prospect, wins over gonzalez and woods in his last 2 fights are good - despite shoqwing his inexperience. now that he has the title, he should fight regularly. cloud, and beibut shumenov - who beat some experienced contenders before narrow and exciting loss to WBA holder campillo (in an apparently excellent fight) - are promising fighters who will bring some much needed aggression and ambition to the previously dull light heavy class. with the promise of further pascal-diaconu fights, things can be pretty good.gobbles wrote:Which exciting young fighters had Cloud fought? Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
Agree with everything you've said here Bomber and with Spud's comments. I was really glad Clinton was able to go 12 and to achieve a semblence of redemption after the Tarver fiasco. He's been a great ambassador for British boxing who has never really got his dues. Reminds me a bit of Glen Catley in that respect - both were never the most naturally gifted but made up for that with heart, soul and grit, and were also those rarities of British fighters willing to fight on foreign soil to prove themselves.Bomber 1 wrote:If Clinton returns to the domestic scene then it is only for the money it's that simple!! Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
Hello Deserter,
To be honest whilst I think Cleverly is a talent - I do not see the point in Clinton fighting him - the maximum he would get offered is around £20k - £40k and that is top whack and Clinton does not need to get in the ring for that sort of money - it would take a serious 6 figure sum and lets face it that will not happen!!! - Even if that 6 figure sum was offered I believe I know Clinton and I still think he would turn it down.
I feel sad for Clinton he did not win but also Glyn Rhodes and his team who have really got clinton back to something like his best - but hey good old father time has caught Clinton up and I honestly believe he should and WILL retire and be extremely proud of what he has achieved!!! - Also I give props to Dennis Hobson who has been magnificent for Clinton Woods career - he kept faith with Clinton when others may not have bothered and its been a good partnership!!!
People should not waste their time in writing about Cleverly against Woods - the fight simply will not happen - seriously concentrate on other opponents for the welshman!!!

yeah i think i agree with you spud.
can't see clinton allowing FW to use him as a stepping stone for cleverly.

Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
I think if Cloud is actually kept busy, then he can improve. He looks pretty compact and his hooks look pretty heavy. The natural question: another Jeff Lacy, perhaps? Hopefully not.
It seems that Dawson needs a dance partner and should stop calling out older big names. Boxing should build up toward a Dawson-Cloud fight I reckon.
Dawson's very good but has become a tedious American talent reliant on HBO licence fee and I would hope for Cloud to smash him. Glen Johnson - similar style, much more experience, much less fresh - almost pulled off the job...

well your prediction war wrong he never crushed him at all. clinton did us proud and what a difference from the tarver fight,we carried the flags to the ring for clinton and if this is clintons last fight im proud to be out here and part of it....both fighters gave every thing and youth was the difference. the americans were very disrespectful.exittored wrote:COME ON CLOUDS....

Re: Woods and Cloud make the weight
I think the issue is that Dawson - the top guy at the weight, the young man fortunate enough to have HBO licence fee for his fights, the guy who is starting to bore everyone - is starting to look listless vs older men. fighting to their pace and being tedious, tedious but safe in knowledge that he has a TV contract with the biggest paymasters in boxing.gobbles wrote:Which exciting young fighters had Cloud fought? As exitorred wrote, Dawson needs a fresh challenge, some hungry up and comer, if he is to find his defining night.
For a young contender Cloud, wins over Gonzalez and Woods are great experience. Yes he should have been more active between the 2 fights, but Im sure the only way he could get these opponents to fight him is the promise of an IBF elim/title shot.
