Jobs in boxing

Can anyone give me any advice as to how to go about getting a job in the boxing industry? I'm from the north west and currently been made redundant and whilst looking for a new job nothing has inspired me at all. I started thinking about what I'm passionate about and doing a job that I genuinely cared for and boxing is my biggest passion. Can anyone give me any tips? I appreciate I could just ask the guys at the gym to help me qualify as a trainer which in the long term is great but in the short term I need a job! I know this is a strange post but where better to ask than here? Mod's, feel free to delete this if it offends you.

A good and tough question... I guess it would depend on what your goal is, you say its coaching - well alot of coaches do it just to get the kids off the street of an evening and have some kind of other income.

I really don't know how you could start, this crisis if affecting Boxing as much as any industry. I would imagine the best bet would be to phone local promoters asking if they have any vaccancies for pretty much anything, and use the evening/weekend to work voluntarily in a gym. Gym's will always appreciate a hand, but it will probably be a voluntarily hand (at first anyway).

Good advice mate, I'm planning on ringing promoters and just seeing if they have anything going. I would like to be a coach for exactly that reason but genuinely just want to work in boxing. I've done some internet writing in the past and wouldn't mind starting that again but need something to pay the bills.

The best way to start would be by volunteering to help.
However you've said you need the dosh.
Getting involved in boxing is a vocation, not a job.
This isn't a business with set hours, there's enough to do outside the gym as there is in it.
You have to have a passion to do this, and money is way down the list of priorities.
My advice would be to sort yourself out a job to pay the bills, then volunteer to help at a local gym and see where that takes you.

Sorry mate, I don't think there's anything you can do within the industry to get immediate cash - unless you want to turn pro and box yourself.

Every other 'official' role in the sport requires study of some kind and taking qualifications. Nothing wrong with that but it's time.

I'd be amazed in the current climate if you could find a promoter to pay you to do something. There are plenty of people who are prepared to do stuff for nothing just to get a break.

As for journalism - there is hardly anyone who makes any money from writing about boxing - and certainly not enough to pay the bills. If there are ten people who make a full-time living from writing about boxing and nothing else, I'd be amazed. You can get a few quid here and there but not enough to live off. I should know - I've been doing it for a while now. Look at Terry D - he's got a deserved break at both Boxing News and Boxing Scene and he won't be earning enough to go full-time, nowhere near.

Sorry to be so depressing. But this is just IMMEDIATE. If you want to do some coaching quals, go for it - and boxercise in a popular class in gyms too which can earn you money. Just not straight away.

I would rather answer you - than the predictable but sometimes amusing sh*t from others!!! - if indeed your post is a genuine one then be prepared to seperate the "banter" from the more serious posts on here.

Never made any secret of things I used to really want a job within the sport - however its certainly not the case now. Boxing is a very insular sport, if your face fits you will get in there - if not you have no chance - its like anything you have to be prepared to work hard to progress.

To get your foot in the door be prepared to do anything - I did - thats from the driving to any of the other sh*t jobs - its like anything in life if you work your nuts off then people will use you - and yep despite the patronising sh*t you will see here - whilst I started with the sh*t jobs I ended up working on many world title shows and in addition worked on a few shows in Monte Carlo and Las Vegas.

Seriously get hold of all of the promoters - get across how enthusiastic you are about the sport and how hard you are prepared to work you may just get a break.

Again I keep using the phrase - despite the banter - all of the promoters are good at what they do - but you will not get a full time job with any of them unless they have a TV contract and then its bloody hard to get in there because money is so tight - most of the time I merely got expenses but I consider myself the luckiest bloke alive - I lived the dream for 10 years - now I have to get a proper job.

All of the promoters are good guys - that includes Hennessy, Maloney and even Mr W arren - they look after their staff - but if you could get something with someone have a pop at Matchroom Sports, Hatton Promotions, Steve Wood or Hayemaker Promotions - the work you will get will be when shows are on - if indeed they need someone.

The biggest thing is pal, do not pin your hopes on paying your bills etc etc with a job in the sport - you will come unstuck - if you are fortunate enough to have another job in life and you can mix that with some part time work in the sport then you are very lucky - thats what I did.

I genuinally wish you all the luck in the world - if you get the chances I did you can live that dream - but be prepared to take a lot of sh*t on the way.

Getting into high-level ABA coaching is probably next to impossible until others retire. If you had the money you could open a club, but few of us do. Refereeing's the likeliest avenue I think, although you need very thick skin for it (and the time to qualify). Cuts work doesn't pay. Does anyone know about anything within promotion?

Here's a good one: drive around the roughest area you know throwing notes out the window, then offer to manage the winner if he's unarmed.

Yes, and he must be one of the fittest blokes in the UK for his age. Does classes at an incredibly high pace, knackering the fittest of gym members and it seems like nothing to him.

Yes I been taking photos for about 5 years now spent about 2500 on petrol and coming up to my 50 show not bad for someone has to drive on average about 3 hours to get to a show. As long as i cover my petrol though the odd job at a paper i am happy.

Firstly I only got that job because you and Massouw couldn't be arsed getting up!!! - and thanks for the sympathy when the crash happened I remember when you got back from explaining the bathroom photos you laughed your b*llocks off !!!

The funny side of things I can remember us seeing poor Victor outside Wembley Arena a while after - he tried to run away!!! Nice bloke!!!

Whilst we are talking about Russian Boxers who was that bloke we picked up at Heathrow - and we thought he couldn't understand english and I think one of your phrases was he going to be "cannon fodder"??
