Ray Leonard - Tommy Hearns (2) - The Scoring Thread
Re: Ray Leonard - Tommy Hearns (2) - The Scoring Thread
C man,
I am ready to do the next one when you are. Sorry it took me
so long to score this one.
I have always enjoyed this fight.
Had Hearns jabbed more in the mid to late rounds, moved better
and not stood still for Ray's flurries I think he could have shut
Leonard out. I think if Hearns looked for a left hook at the end of
his right hand like his corner man said he would have doen better.
Ray needed to look for the left hook better. That long range over
hand right was risky.
Good fight.....Hearns was a clear winner.

Round 10
Leonard lands lots of jabs but still seems to think if he can get in one big right hand he can KO Tommy.
Hearns legs looked rubbery for a while but worked his way back into the round but didn't land enough.
Leonard - 10-9

Round 11
Leonard, having strung together two rounds in a row, seemed to be looking good for a strong finish. Just as he was admiring his handiwork, Boom! Big right hand from Hearns and Ray is in trouble. 2 more rights and down he goes. Leonard is a tough guy though and is fighting back over the last minute.
Hearns - 10-8

Round 12
Tommy spent the first 30 seconds trying to knock Ray out and landed some nice shots........ Until he was pulled up in his tracks and then spent most of the rest of the round getting whacked!
Leonard - 10-9 (close to being 10-8)

Good fight.....but a draw it aint.
Re: Ray Leonard - Tommy Hearns (2) - The Scoring Thread
Collins and Robinson both score Rd 1 10-9 for Hearns and Rd 5 10-9 for Leonard. If those two rounds are even close to being equal you create major scoring problems for the rest of the bout. This is why I prefer a liberal use of even rounds. Let the decisive ones decide the winner.
Personally, I can easily see it as 10-10 for the 1st (nothing really happened) and 10-8 Leonard for the 5th.

But you undermine your own case a little by calling the 5th round 10-8 when it was nowhere near a decisive 10-8.

I never understood the 10-8 for the last rd. leonard definitely had a huge rd and Tommy was in trouble at the end. But hearns had him hurt early and landed a significant number of clean, unanswered punches.

Totally agree. Take away the first minute and it's a 10-8 to Ray. But Tommy had Ray in big trouble early on.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:I never understood the 10-8 for the last rd. leonard definitely had a huge rd and Tommy was in trouble at the end. Re: Ray Leonard - Tommy Hearns (2) - The Scoring Thread
I just watched this fight for the first time, first off I wanna say. What a great fight!!! Both men gave it their all and both landed big shots and hurt their man on more numerous occasions, lotta drama in this one!!!
I had it 114-112 for Hearns. Here's how my card breaks down over the 12 rounds
Round 1: Leonard (close round, I thought he landed the bigger shots and edged it)
Round 2: Hearns
Round 3: Hearns (10-8 round for the knockdown)
Round 4: Leonard
Round 5: Leonard
Round 6: Hearns
Round 7: Hearns (Leonard finished the round stronger, but Hearns hurt him pretty bad at the beginning of the round, I give him the slight edge in that round because of that)
Round 8: Hearns
Round 9: Leonard
Round 10: Leonard
Round 11: Hearns (10-8 round, another knockdown)
Round 12: Leonard (closes the fight strong, gunning for the KO, doesn't get it)
So anyway, great fight. One more round in Leonard's favor and I would've had a draw as well, the only round I thought could've gone his way that I didn't give him anyway was the 7th...that being said, the 1st could've also went Tommy's way.
I think Tommy deserved it, but it wasn't the robbery some people make it out to be.

If I was Richard Steele. In the final round I would have said
1) Tommy you gotta stop the holding
2) Tommy you gotta stop the holding or I'm gonna take away a point.
3) 1 Point-1 Point-1 Point.

Re: Ray Leonard - Tommy Hearns (2) - The Scoring Thread
In my opinion Richard Steele had a real bad habit of jumping in between the two fighters for basically no reason quite a few times in that bout when one of them had the other one hurt. It got on my nerves...he did it both when Hearns hurt Leonard and when Leonard hurt Hearns on a few occasions. I hate to see referee's do stuff like that. I didn't see any holding from Hearns that was bad enough to merit a point deduction.Seamus wrote:If I was Richard Steele. In the final round I would have said

He did hold on for dear life quite a bit when he was hurt. Some refs will let you get away with that, some won't. Something you don't hear much about is the "knockdown" in the 3rd round. That should not have ruled a knockdown.
