I read that he was his son on AIBA's website at: http://www.aiba.org/en-US/news/ozqsp/ne ... /news.aspx

Here is the part of the page that talks about Savon:
"Meanwhile Cuba is back after missing the AIBA World Championships Chicago 2007. They have plenty of youthful talent including Olympic silver medallists Yankiel Leon Alarcon (54kg), Emilio Correa Bayeux (75kg) and Carlos Banteur Suarez (69kg) while the son of heavyweight legend Felix Savon - Erislandy Savon Cotilla - will make his elite world championship debut after claiming the youth world title last year."

Team USA left for Italy today. As far as I know all #1's are healthy and are on their way to compete in the World Championships.

I know Naim Terbunja of Sweden is good as I saw him win the 2009 National Golden Gloves. It will be interesting to see how he does against the rest of the world. In the future I would like to see a rematch between Terbunja and Luis Arias.

Indian contingent for the World Championships:

1. 48 kgs - NANAO SINGH
2. 51 kgs - SURANJOY SINGH
3. 54 kgs - JITENDER KUMAR
4. 57 kgs - AKHIL KUMAR
5. 60 kgs - JAI BHAGWAN
6. 64 kgs - MANOJ KUMAR
7. 75 kgs - VIJENDER SINGH
8. 81 kgs - DINESH KUMAR
9. 91 kgs - MANPREET SINGH

No one being sent in 69kg and +91kg categories. There are 4 Olympians in that list including the Bronze medalist Vijender Singh - ranked 2nd in the AIBA rankings behind Correa - and Akhil & Jitender who came close to adding to the medal tally. Also, watch out for Suranjoy Singh - Gold medalist at Asian Championships, ending India's 15 year drought for a gold - and Nanao Singh - ranked 5th in the AIBA rankings, 6th in Michael Smith rankings. Hoping for India to finally announce their presence at the world stage :)

Egor Mekhontsev is obviously good. He lost one bout and had a draw in the other against Clemente Russo in the Italy vs Russia dual this year.

In less than 24 hours, the draw and bracketing will be done and we should all know who actually entered the tourney and who they will be boxing.

My Mexican hopes are with Oscar Valdez and a bit less with Oscar Molina and Braulio Ávila. The Mexican Federation is a piece of ashit so I don't know how soon will they ruin them out as they have done with practically every prospect since those great 2003 PanAms...

Any reason for the rest? I don't think he fought in last years European championships in Liverpool. Also is the Worlds not a massive tournement for which he surely would of planned his rest time? He's only about 25 so not getting to old. Is he thinking of going pro i wonder?

The weigh-ins are done, but I haven't seen anything reported about it. The draw will be finished in 4.5 hours.

55 minutes now. Pretty anxious to see how it looks. Hope they won't make us wait too much, though I imagine preparing a Web-ready version of the draw will take some time.

From AIBA website:

Roberto Cammarelle, the world and Olympic super-heavyweight champion, will take on Michael Hunter of the USA in the first round of the AIBA World Championships which get underway tomorrow at the Mediolanum Forum in Milan.

The draw was made earlier today, using seedings for the very first time. Cammarelle, seeded first, is sure to find plenty of support in his home town for what promises to be an enthralling first-round encounter.

Another home favourite, world champion and Olympic silver medalist Clemente Russo who is seeded second in the heavyweight category, faces Julio Castillo of Ecuador.

Vasyl Lomachenko of the Ukraine, winner of the Val Barker Trophy for best boxer at the Beijing Olympics, is seeded first in the 57kg category and starts his campaign against Mario Aleksic of Bosnia and Herzegovina after a bye in the first round.

Meanwhile one of Cuba's brightest stars, Carlos Banteur, also has a bye in the first round before taking on Errol Spence of the USA in another highly anticipated clash.

It was the first time in the history of the AIBA World Championships that seedings were used for the draw. The seedings have been implemented thanks to the recently introduced AIBA World Rankings, based on international results since the 2007 Chicago World Championships.

The full draw will be available on www.aiba.org later this evening. The action starts tomorrow, with three sessions of boxing per day for the first six days. The semi-finals take place on Friday 11 September with the finals the following day.

Damn, Mike Hunter has Roberto Cammarelle of Italy in the 1st rd. Cammarelle is the gold medal winner in the last worlds and Olympics. Hunter will have to KO him to win because there is no way he will get a fair decision. Errol Spence goes aginst Cuban Carlos Banteur at 69 kg., another tough draw.

Is Correa participating in the World Championships or is it going to be Rey Recio instead of him? I'm asking because Vijender has been seeded first in 75 kg category and that would not happen if Correa is there, right? Or can the seeds be in a different order than the world rankings?

BTW Vijender faces off against Bakhtiyar Artayev [KAZ] in the second round, that's gonna be an interesting bout :box:

Correa is injured and not competing. Recio is representing Cuba.
