Power v Edmonds - British Title Eliminator

Post by GazMan85 »

Power v Edmonds as an eliminator on 11th September. I think this is going to be a cracking fight.

It is a good fight. I am glad that Power won't be heading straight into a British title fight.

If Power can win this then he will be in a much better position to challenge the British champion than if he had gone straight for the title.

Edmonds has been well looked after but been found wanting when he has been stepped up. Power has the proven track record, and if he is back to anything like his best, i'm sure he will canter home

Former British bantamweight champion Martin “Too much” Power takes on Newport’s Matthew Edmonds in an eliminator for his old title next month in London.
Londoner Martin (of Irish ancestry) held the British title for a heady couple of years but then lost his way after South African spider Tshifhiwa Munyai denied him for the Commonwealth bantamweight title (twice) but came back with a win in June and is determined to get back up there at 29.
Edmonds, 25, will have plans of his own, of course, and the former Welsh amateur star comes off a loss to St Helens banger Gary Davis (who has beaten both men) for the British title in April at York Hall in seven rounds but has lost only to the lean, dangerous Davis, the vastly more experienced Jason Booth and unbeaten Scot Kris Hughes (all 5ft 11ins of him) in 13 outings. Edmonds, trained by ex-pro Tony Borg, is quick, sharp and talented but lacks genuine power and his defence can be leaky.
Power is not a huge hitter himself (despite his nickname), and his own defence has let him down, but is hard to quell because he keeps on firing, often in fine combinations, rarely losing momentum and never heart. Moreover, he has fought at a consistently higher level than Edmonds and consistently over 12 rounds (Edmonds has never done 12). Power outscored Dale Robinson for the British title back in 2005 (dropping the nut in expertly at one point) and retained against Ian Napa and Isaac “Argie” Ward. He’s had almost as twice as many fights as Edmonds and is just one notch away from a magnificent Lonsdale Belt for life.
His experience, desire and workrate, along with home advantage, tilt the balance firmly his way.

Was Borg's son a welsh amateur champion at, maybe middleweight, a couple of times. Didnt he foul foul of the law fighting with rascisits, or somehting.

Although I think this is a 50-50 fight I think Edmonds will come out on top in this one. I think he will be more hungrier for the win than Martin. And it is still unclear if Martin is back to his best, or if he is on the decline, think this fight will show us the answer to that.

I've watched Martin for years, and love to watch him fight. And yes, I do know Edmonds personally, so I will be shouting for him on the night, but I honestly do think Edmonds will win this late stoppage or decision.

Good Luck to both......... :TU:

Yeh I think people underestimate Edmonds power. If i'm not mistaken Gary said to him after their fight 'and they told me you couldn't punch'.

Either way, I dont think either of these will be fighting Gary. I think if Gary comes through the fight with Napa, then he may vacate and go for Euro honours, as said by his brother and best mate.

If Napa wins then, surprisingly I fancy both Edmonds and Power to beat Napa if on form.

Congrats on the new baby boy :TU:

I thought Gary wanted to win the Lonsdale belt outright ?? Not many boxers gets the chance to win it so if i was Gary i would give it a go.

With the bit about Power having no punch at all,i think its all a bit tongue in cheek.
Gary had an easy win over Power stopping him in 2 so he probably wouldn't have taken many Punch's from Martin but that wont be the same Power who fights Edmond's on the 11Th.

We will all see the power who blew away Issac Ward in 8 rounds, that beat Ian Napa and Dale Robinson on points and the same Power who Played about with Rocky Dean for 6 rounds who then went on to Sparking your brother out,who in return beat an out of sorts Power.

IMO Gary has heard that Power IS looking sharp in the gym and wants nothing to do with him now citing that he has nothing to prove fighting Power again. :TU:

Just my opinion.

Edmond's is a good boxer and Gary did well to stop him in 7.

Looking forward to both fights :TU:

sorry mate have 2 laugh at that i can onnestly onnestly say that isnt the case mate ha ha its a very funny comment imo power has had his time im friends on here wit martin and i hope he proves me rong and gary hasnt said hes got nothing to prove fighting power he just said he would ko him again and that edmonds will smash him to bits but gary wants bigger and better things ie european title witch i think he could win so if he does martin wins british then challenges gary for european but either way gary WILL ko martin again

Like i said,we're all entitle to our opinions and Gary's entitle to his but come on....Does he really think that Edmond's smashes Power to BITS ?

If Gary beats Napa and vacates and then wins the European and Power wins his eliminator and then fights for the vacant crown and wins,THAT would set up a nice fight with 2 titles on the line.

I wont say that Power ko's Davies but he will beat him if they ever fought again.

They are moving it back again?

Unless one of them is injured, I don't think it is right to keep messing these two about.
