A purse offer for the elimination bout to determine the official challenger between No. 2 ranked Howard Eastman of England and No. 3 ranked Jermain Taylor of the United States was also held Thursday afternoon during the general assembly meeting. Mick Hennessey won with the sole bid of $252,000, with a 50-percent share for each boxer.

Thats chump change to someone with the backing Taylor has, he must earn a lot more for his HBO fights. Fight will not happen.

Last I heard, Taylor has a 4th Dec date with HBO - and Eastman was on the short list.

Probably turn out to be another light-middleweight warm up for Taylor though.

If they ever do meet, Eastman is going to look like a heavyweight to the American.

MW, that's a good point. Taylor's been fighting reasonably regularly but against guys who aren't of Eastman's size. Eastman's a big old boy, and he doesn't fall over easily.

I hope this happens, and I hope the winner gets to fight Hopkins, but I don't think either will work out

Jermaine Taylor has only fought Junior Middleweights his whole career and he would be way in over his head when he fights Howard Eastman. Just look at what Taylors Opposition been, blown up Junior middleweights like Raul Marquez, Alex Bunema and Freddie Cuevas come on as soon as Howard catches Taylor, Taylor will go down. Taylor has been babied with bad opposition who have good records or as I say been giving many soft touches. From what I heard if Taylor's people refuse to fight Eastman then Eastman is automatically Installed as the number one contender.

I don't think anyone is predicting Taylor will just turn up and blow Eastman away, or anything close to it. But Taylor is quality, a lot more so than anyone Eastman has faced over the last 3 years.

Who will struggle most - Taylor with Eastmans size or Eastman with Taylors ability? Take your pick. Like I said it's a step up for both.

I agree with Bollocks' view, I think Taylor's team know something is up and believe the fight won't happen.

Thats a pultry sum and I can't even see Eastman taking the fight for the amount of money HE'LL be getting.

If it does happen, then Taylor will win. The guy is quality.

Exactly. Hennessy was the only bidder, which is why they were the winner. No way is Taylor going to take this fight. It is supposed to be a final eliminator, but, at this point, Taylor's people don't want him in with a legitimate middleweight much less close to a fight with Hopkins (who would put a hurting on him). Also, no way will his people let him in with an awkward guy like Soliman. Smart money is on Taylor "stepping up" by fighting William Joppy who hasn't been effective in 4 years.

I though William had retired? Well he has only been out of action for 12 months and never was the most active of fighters so I can't see the lay off doing him much harm - it effects some fighters more than most and Joppy has been a double world champion in a sporadic career.

Joppy beat Eastman and neither have done much since that performance. I have no reason to think why Joppy is less of a test than Eastman.

Joppy of course is out of the rankings, I wait for him to amazingly re-appear of the next few weeks and may make the Eastman vs Taylor proposed semi-final void.

Joppy was lucky to get out of the fight against Eastman with a win. It was very close and had Eastman started sooner, he could've KO'd Joppy. As far as being a test, look at what Joppy has done since the year 2000. He's been absolutely demolished twice (Trinidad and Hopkins) and his best win was over Eastman where he was well on the way to getting knocked out. Other than that, he had a win against an unknown Japanese Middleweight.

Eastman may not have done much in the meantime since his showdown with Joppy, but at least he hasn't been beaten up as badly as Joppy was against Hopkins.

irrelevant....

We're not comparing Eastman to Joppy, Joppy has already been a title holder, albeit fairly briefly, his career is pretty much over anyway, that's if he hasn't retired.

Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda, sure, Eastman coulda knocked him out, but he didn't. Potentially I could have been Naomi Campbells boyfriend, but I ain't.

Eastman didn't force the fight enough, and chose to leave it to the judges despite the fact is was very close, as you admit. Joppy was nailing him at will for several rounds, and all that showboating didn't impress the judges one bit, instead of shaking his head, he should have been pounding Joppy in the teeth.

Don't get me wrong, Howard is a talented fighter, and easily one of the best middleweights, top 5 certainly, but if you want to be champion, you have to look like you are trying more when you go to the states.

My personal opinion is that even judged correctly, and not on those emotive terms, he still lost, by 2 rounds i think i had it to Joppy.

As for Taylor, he may not be ready for Eastman, he's not faced anything like genuine world class middleweights yet, and he could come unstuck. Having said that, I thought Vanderpool would do Lacy, so what do I know?

With the exception of about 6 months, Joppy was a relatively long reigning WBA champion (1996-2001) until he ran into Trinidad. He then picked up the WBA "regular" championship again in the Eastman fight and held it for about two years (where his activity was limited).

My point had nothing to do with how one judged the Eastman-Joppy fight. I'm stating that as of right now, Howard Eastman would be more of a challenge for Jermain Taylor than William Joppy (and furthermore that Taylor won't be fighting Eastman in December or January because of that fact).

Perhaps this particular thread does not focus on comparing Eastman to Joppy, however, it does focus on Eastman-Taylor. The "short list" of "approved" opponents for Taylor's next fight include Eastman, Joppy, and Sam Soliman, which is where (for me) Joppy came into the discussion.

Sorry, wasn't having a pop, and i actually missed reading a couple of the posts.

I agree though that Eastman is a much more live opponent than Joppy, who from what I understand if fighting out of neccesity more than desire. He has paid out lots of money in court settlements hasn't he?

Boxingtalk.com has been informed that undefeated middleweight up and comer Jermain Taylor will take on William Joppy on December 4. No contracts have been signed yet, but we understand promoters Lou DiBella and Don King have already agreed to terms.

wish you would post more opinions like that.
far more valid than the other stuff.

Seems to me this was just a bid for bids sake and that it was never taken seriously by either side.

As for these organisations ranking I dont take any bloody notice, its a total farce. The one thing that could have been done with Howard and I dont blame solely his promotional team at all, he could have been

1. Much busier and much more high profile

2. calling out the top names and making attempts to fight top ten ranked fighters.

3. been in trianing in the country not feeding his feckin canaries in Guyana.

dont get me wrong I like howard, I wish he had done the above so he would be right up there, its a sad shame and at present a waste of a talented and world class fighter. I hope he can get his deserved shot before time catches up with him

That's basically what i've said before, if he'd have done the things you've mentioned then maybe he'd have already had a shot at Hopkins. And at worst he'd have cemented his place in the rankings, not just the WBC either, he'd have been higher placed with all the other organisations, and he'd be in a far better position than the one he currently finds himself in. I mean, you can't just sit on a ranking, fighting relative nobodies, indefinitely.

From http://www.fightnews.com

Last week, Hennessy Sports won a WBC purse bid for the right to stage an eliminator between William Joppy and Jermain Taylor in England. However, promoter Mick Hennessy doesn't like the way events involving the fight are unfolding. "There has been some talk of Jermain Taylor fighting William Joppy. That would just be plain wrong," stated Hennessy. "If Taylor doesn’t want to go the championship route, his team should have pulled him out of the purse bid before it took place. In my eyes Taylor needs to stop picking his targets; he has spent too much time fighting blown-up light middleweights and needs a credible opponent now."

"I don’t feel Joppy is that. When he boxed Howard in 2001 he lost – despite Howard starting slowly – on everyone’s scorecards except the judges. He has only fought twice since; against a little known opponent in 2002 and then Hopkins in 2003, who beat him badly.

"Howard on the other hand has won eight times, scored six knockouts, reclaimed his European title, defended it three times and last time out dominated Jerry Elliott.

"Let me make it clear: despite what others have been saying, Eastman-Taylor is a final eliminator for the WBC middleweight title. That means the winner becomes the mandatory to Bernard Hopkins.

"The fact that Felix Trinidad has now been moved into the WBC’s number one position will not affect this. I was present at the meeting at the convention where Felix Trinidad was installed. I addressed the convention at the time. I explained that I was there personally to submit a purse bid for the final eliminator between their long-standing #1 Eastman and Taylor to establish the mandatory contender to Bernard Hopkins.

"I asked for reassurance that this contest would not be affected and that the purse bid would still take place, despite rumours to the contrary.

"In front of the convention, President Jose Sulaiman confirmed that as the contest had already been agreed, Trinidad’s ranking would have no bearing on the situation.

"That means that if either Howard Eastman or Jermain Taylor withdraws from this final eliminator, the other will automatically be made the official challenger to Bernard Hopkins. I have that in writing from the WBC."

Baloney! Hennessy is still trying to rewrite history. (His story.)

Posing doesn’t get U points anywhere outside England.

If Howard really wants to make an impression world wide, he should
fight Felix Sturm who has impressed the Yanks a lot more. :TU:

Fair comment really, however, I suppose that any promoter would say the same thing given that Howard's loss was so close. Personally I had Howard losing it clearly, but in a very close fight.

I don't think Di Bella has any intention of facing Taylor off against Howard, they are going to pursue other options. They are just delaying matters until they can find another route to a title and/or Hopkins.

I hope I am wrong...

True James - Remeber Jack Trickett claiming Brodie had been robbed in the first Chi match. Whilst, I agree with him if that ruling shoudn't exist and really technically Brodie should have been awarded the fight (becuase without that point deduction he would have). However, did Brodie really win the fight.

Don't trust the WBC (or any sanctioning body). Witter was the number #2 ranked Light Welter, pulled out of an elimination match through legitimate injury and lost his position. The fight was set.

Same thing will happen here, I wouldn't call Joppy an easier option than Eastman (about the same). So why would Taylor duck Eastman and lose the opportunity to fight for the title. He knows that it will be Eastman (and not him) who suffers should that not go ahead.
