Why no lurkers allowed in the British?

Post by chinny »

This has probably been done, but can someone remind me why you need to log in to view the British and Irish forum? I'm guessing it must be some kind of legal thing.

It seems to me that the traffic on here has gone down significantly over the last few months despite the welcome addition of bigmark and the others from doghouse.

If anything I actually think it has been busier than usual, especially when you consider we haven't had too many fights to discuss over the last couple of months.

It's always like a morgue (sp) on the boxing forums in August, because there's feck all to talkabout. I was curious to why it's only the British forum that you need to be logged in to view

Coco read between the lines fella.:KO:

People not being members here, having little interest in posting not having to register lurking on the Brit scene, then telling tales to certain folk in the business?

you can see how that might cause issues?

Thanks guys understood.

You guys know the legal ramifications I guess, but I was a lurker for a couple of weeks before I joined and I suppose requiring sign up to view threads will definitely stifle new membership. You kind of need to look at something before you decide if you want to 'buy' it!

Completely agree

This is one of the most IMPORTANT threads ever on the Boxrec British Forum. I've been using these Forums since 2003 and the change from being able to come and have a look around to now having to be signed in is a ridiculous one no matter what you say about Spying issues!

I against any type of Elitism and the British Forum now comes across like that.

I very much doubt John wanted that impression... what John did essentially help this forum survive.

John Shep would laugh his fecking head off at being accused of any kind of elitism.

However, in saying that, you and your type are not the kind of people we want round here.

End off the day its nothing to get so exited about that it should consider itself elite , I doubt people in the know hang around here waiting for ground breaking news .

Might be time to get over feeling self important because , you run , or belong , or post or read , a FACKING INTERNET GOSSIP COLUM

On a more serious note i would have thought someone with a work related reason to view the threads i.e looking for potentially libellous posts has a lot more incentive to go to the trouble of creating a log in than a boxing fan browsing different forums deciding which one to join. So I'd expect the sign ups of genuine boxing fans to fall as a result of hiding the forum.

One of the best Posts i've read on boxrec and i've been using Boxrec since May 2003(different name back than)

The reason i left first time around was this sudden influx of Insiders(journo's, hangers on, bag carriers, fluffers etc) to the British forum with their snobby superior 'i know best attitudes' and most of the people who made this forum what it was from the very start left because of this.

Also its complete horseshit that the supposed reason you have to log in is to protect Freedom of Speech! Your having a Fecking laugh aint ya, there isnt ever any Breaking News on these forums that wasnt already broken on another Boxing site first.

My biggest problem though with having to be Logged in is that when i click on a link it dosent open up a separate page so i'm still logged into boxrec, its just too much faffing about having to open up another page and cutting and pasting the link.

If a spy found something he considered libellous, he would have more ammunition in court if he could argue that the offensive comment was viewable for all and sundry on an "open" forum. The fact that it is now for members only - even if it's fairly simple to become a member - makes it less open in the eyes of the law and limits the damage a libel could cause. Probably.

They probably do , but i doubt its to learn anything that is'nt old gossip around the gym's ,its more to do with reading and posting , just like they pick up the news of the world or boxing monthly to read stuff they already know
