Serik Sapiyev looked impressive in his first fight, i reckon he will be favourite to win gold medal in his division.
Do you guys agree?

Did anyone see Akhil Kumar's bout against Roberto Gonazalez (57kg)? What was the score?

I saw the Akhil Kumar fight, he lost but there were some good shot by Akhil which were never given by judges.
Akhil's boxed well, but Roberto was a bit like Felix Diax who beat Thai boxer Manus Boonjumnong in Bejing 08.

The boxer's uniforms are all over the place in regard to the rules. AIBA specifies size limits for the letters and things and many don't seem to follow them. Elchin Alizada has his name in large letters on the back of his jersey while most boxers have the name of their country there instead.

In the 91kg class, Maximiliano SOSA of Argentina looked pretty good. Alizada had an easy bout so it was hard to tell just how good he will be against better competition.

At 91kg, Koeber was doing well against the Russian Mekhontsev in the beginning. Koeber was looking much better than he did against Russo in the Italy vs Germany dual. However, by the end of the first round the Russian was finding his rhythm and starting to have his way against Koeber. So far from what I see, I don't think Mekhontsev will beat Russo, but it will be a good bout.

In the 91kg bout between Armenian Tsolak ANANIKYAN and Slovakian Sandro DIRNFELD the two boxers spent the entire first round battling on the inside with most punches not being able to be seen by enough judges. In the 2nd round, they got a little distance and the score went up more. The two boxers had very similar styles and were evenly matched.

Team USA had a better day today. 48kg - Miguel Cartenga easily defeated his opponent 23-9 and Kevin Rivers won a tough fought battle by a score of 22-19. USA is now 4-4 in the tournament.

Navarro (DOM) beats Kumar (IND) 16:2 (partial 4-1 10-2)

Erislandy Savon announced that he isn't related with the great Felix Savon, two different towns and families

Today... in 69 kg, very good Zamkovoy, Nurudzinau, Sapiyev and good Lima, Kuci, Chiguer, Romanovskij, Keller
in 48 kg very good Ayrapetyan, Pongprayoon, Thokchom, good De la Nieve, Cartagena
in 57 kg very good Vodopyanov, Suarez, Joyce, good Hovhannisyan, Joo, Chudecki, Toledo
in 91 kg very good Alizada, Mekhontsev, Russo, good Sosa, Oliva Aleman, Levit

my personal opinion

Oscar Molina boxes for Mexico now at 69kg, but he was living and boxing in California until 2007 or 2008. When he didn't make the U.S. Olympic team (his brother did), he went and made the Mexican team and has been boxing for Mexico ever since.
If I got any of the info wrong, Mel will correct me since she knows Oscar better than me as he was from her neck of the woods.

On Sunday, USA has Kevin Rivers, Errol Spence, Robert Brant and Jordan Shimmell all boxing. Kevin is in the morning session-11:30, Errol is either in the morning or afternoon-15:30, Robert is in the afternoon and Jordan is in the evening session-20:30. Those are all Italian times (it is 6 hours earlier in the Eastern time zone here in the U.S.).

Correction, the overall competition schedule must be wrong as the new bout sheets for tomorrow show that there are afternoon and evening sessions, but not a morning session. That makes more sense. So it may be wrong for Saturday and Sunday as well.

Nah - you did good. Oscar, along with 2008 Olympian twin brother, started boxing when he was 10 at the Commerce Boxing Club in SoCal. Great kids and their coach is one of a kind. I'm glad Oscar didn't turn pro and would love to see him participate in 2012.

Frankie is down 2-3, but the other guy's nose is getting red and the body shots are taking their toll. Frankie will start to get him in round 2.

I forgot to say who Jessie is boxing tomorrow. Jessie Magdaleno is boxing Denis MAKAROV of Germany.

Magdaleno is tough. He beat '07 world champ Rau'shee Warren in the semi finals of the US Championships on a count back. The bout could have gone either way but Warren was not busy enough.
