Why on Earth wouldn't Hopkins fight Roy Jones?

Post by Cyclops »

I have been reading from a few sources about a radio interview recently where Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones 'discussed' a rematch. Hopkins wanted a 60/40 split in his favour and Jones, surprisingly, suggesed a 60/40 split to the winner. Apparently Hopkins said he could make more money fighting Adamek or Dawson, but as we know these fights don't look like they're coming off. After being challenged on this by the radio host, Hopkins hung up.

That's how I heard it reported anyway.

If this is true (and I haven't heard the interview, so please feel free to set me straight) why on earth wouldn't Hop take the 60/40 to the winner option? Jones looked great against Lacy, but was annihilated by Joe Calzaghe, who struggled mightily to do anything with Hopkins. Plus Hopkins destroyed Kelly Pavlik in his last fight. Hopkins would be favourite by a long chalk, plus he called out Jones after the Pavlik fight anyway. It's not like Hopkins wouldn't want to avenge what he calls his only 'real' loss. I cannot for the life of me see why he wouldn't want to get this fight on, can you?

I would actually be interested in watching this fight, or at least seeing how it panned out. They're BOTH old, so no-one can accuse anybody of picking on a granddad, and both fighters were more entertaining in their last outings than a lot of current boxers who are fighting in thier primes, as sad as I am to say it. Get it on!

True, but he rests even more than Roy and Roy is actuallly bigger and faster imo.

Hopkins never really fancied the return.

Hopkins is 43/44.

He does not care about winning or losing imo, he is just after 1 or 2 last paydays.

Which is why he is saying RJJ should get 40 win or lose. It's mainly down to RJJ not giving Hopkins a proper chance after the Hopkins-Trinidad bout.

RJJ's career is over. (Was about 5 years ago). He is reduced to facing the likes of and old Lacy and Old Trinidad. The only decent guy he faced was Joe, and that's only because Joe knew RJJ was shot to bits, and that's how Joe rolls.

Hopkins aint giving RJJ a chance to get back with the best, when he arrogantly dismissed Hopkins back in their Primes.

I may be wrong, but that's what i feel, i just feel Hopkins couldn't care less what RJJ has to say, facts are facts, and RJJ is ridiculously shot, and just needs to retire.

I agree, RJJ stil has more skill and speed than anyone out there in the SM and LT Heavy Divisions.

When was the last time Hopkins stoped anyone?

:o Which was why Calzaghe essentially battered him from pillar to post in their fight? Assuming you're discounting JC because of his retirement then Dawson would also comfortably have the beating of Jones as this stage of his career.

Also both Froch and Kessler would have the beating of him imo.

Hopkins has always been difficult to deal with, I remember he doubled his demands after FW agreed the JC fight for him when both were in their primes.
He always wants too much money, always fights at home and wants to be the heavier man.
Unless he has everything his own way he don't fight.

I said he has more skills and speed than anyone out there at SM or Light Heacy and HE HAS!

He has more skills and speed than JC but JC is tougher and has better stamina.

JC is retired but he was still faster and more skilled than JC.

I agree, this is true, and also he holds other fighters to ransom because due to being promoted by Golden Boy, he is the only way for many fighters to get a payday on HBO.

I hope everyone egnores this hugger for a good year, and then it's likely that we'll have seen the last of him.

One thing witht he Calzaghe fight, I believe Hopkins had an issue with then promoter Don King. King wanted a cut of each fight that Hopkins found unreasonable, so he would wait until the contract expired until pursuing big fights (and waiting for smaller men to move up and fight him).

I don't know which fight you were watching then as Calzaghe clearly had the superior hand speed.

No offence bro, but it's a fact Hopkins called Jones out after the Pavlik fight so I don't know if I agree with your point on this. OK, after the Calzaghe humiliation you could've made the point that Hop would have little to gain legacy wise from fighting Roy Jones, just cos Joe did such a number on him. But Jones did stop Lacy, and provided he beats Green, and in the same style, then he's still a marketable player. I dunno if he's ridiculously shot. He put Calzaghe down in the first, like Hop, but unlike Hop who got Calzaghe with a flash knockdown with a little push to help him over, Roy put Joe on his face. It's only because Calzaghe has freakish recovery powers that he got up at all! It was still kind of competetive in the early rounds with both of them showboating then Joe pulled away, Roy got cut and then didn't know what to do... I know I'll get a lot of hate for this but maybe, just maybe, Calzaghe was really good and that's why he won, not cos Roy can't fight anymore.

Plus, more time will have passed, Hop'll be that bit older, Roy's getting his confidence back and things'll have evened out a bit. Remember, before the Pavlik fight we were writing Hop off as a boring fighter who held and faked low blows. Freddie Roach told him to retire. Now we all think he's a monster and a freak of nature, bashing up a young lion who we all thought would end his career. I think it'd be a cool fight that B-Hop'll be the favourite in but you won't be able to count Roy out of.

So, to re-iterate, I don't buy the 'B-Hop won't give Roy a chance to fight amongst the big boys again 'cos he doesn't like the way he's spoken to him all these years' line.

Bernard, if you don't like the dude, bash him up, take his 60% and finish his career.

I dont understand.

Yeah Roy did beat Lacy. But does that mean anything?

He was never established as a World Class boxer, and i pretty much doubt he will ever even come close.

Not going to count Roy off. Anyone has a chance, but dont think Roy "has still got it" just because his opponents make him look good. Because he is finished.

If you think Joe beat a good version of RJJ, i'm really just not going to waste my time.
If you bother to do even just a little bit of research, you'll know that RJJ was dangerously KO'd about 5 years ago....TWICE!

Joe beat a shot to bits RJJ, and that's exactly what RJJ is now, Shot to bits,

You should watch both knockdowns again - Hopkins' was a clean one that was beautifully timed, whereas the reason Jones knocked Joe down so heavily was because he actually connected with his forearm rather than his glove - in no way intentional but it was more akin to a forearm smash. It was absolutely clear on the replays that it was a freak accident rather than intentional delivery that led to Joe being stunned so heavily.

That has nothing to do with his current state, before he fought Ruiz he was sensational, fast with awesome reflexes then after Ruiz he looked totally lethargic and out of sorts against Tarver then got KO'd in the rematch, then to Johnson. The drop from heavyweight to light heavy is what messed Jones up not the KO's - which were hardly "dangerous" either, it's not as if his life was in danger now was it?

Yeah I know trust me I've watched 'em. I've watched the Hopkins fight in slo-mo for f***s sake, just to make sure to myself who really won there's so much debate (yawn) The Jones knockdown IS a forearm smash. But the reality is if he had knocked Joe out with that, then it would still have been a knockout and a win for Roy, but yeah, you're right. I told you I'd get hate for suggesting Roy Jones isn't as washed up as he seems- just throwing some thoughts out there. That's why it's a discussion, right? But we're not really talking about the Calzaghe fights, which will be tiresomely debated forever in slagging matches until everyone dies of boredom. I was just using a common opponent as a discussion point OK? I still want to see this fight.

I think BHop is avoiding it as, even though he's 44, a loss to RJJ now would be very bad for his reputation, it's a big risk for Hopkins IMO.

A win would be sweet revenge, but a loss and all sorts will be questioning his legacy, seems as Roy is quite passed it
