Larry Holmes vs Carl Williams - The Scoring Thread
Prefight
This is an NBC Sports Special with a good intro to the fight.
I enjoyed where Larry was asked what he would do if he lost tonight and he said "I'd shake the man's hand and say good luck to you sir". It's always interesting to to get an insight into how people see themselves. Larry would have us believe he could be a good loser... We all saw how that turned out a couple of fights later.
Larry is stated to be an 8 - 1 favourite.
Jose Feliciano gives his great rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. Always liked Jose; his version of The Doors "Light My Fire" is brilliant.
It seems Marvis Frazier vs James Tillis is being shown first but I will leave that for another day.

Re: Larry Holmes vs Carl Williams - The Scoring Thread
I shall start my scoring later on this day. 3am start today, so getting
close to the tail end of the day...
Holmes was a good loser in the context of how he was supported. And
to be technical a dead man can carry no ones jock strap ;)
I have not seen Tillis-Frazier would like to check it out some time,.

Re: Larry Holmes vs Carl Williams - The Scoring Thread
Here we go...
Round 1
Good close opening round.
Carl's jab is long and fast and accurate and he makes good use of it. Larry looks quite surprised to be outjabbed.
Holmes own jab starts to come into play plus a couple of right hands which are fast and dangerous.
Close round but I liked Williams's work just a little better than the champ's.
Williams - 10-9

Round 2
Holmes landed a lovely right hand that got Williams' attention in the first 30 secs.
Looked like Larry was going to get on top.
The Truth came back strong though with his excellent jab and just did enough to nick another close round.

Round 3
The Truth is just doing enough with that jab to win these rounds.
Larry isn't throwing enough and what he does throw is often a little off target.
Like the last round, Larry probably landed the best punch of the round but it was negated by all the good jabs Carl landed.

My rounds so far...
Round 1
Holmes 10-9 (could be 10-10)
was a close round, exchange of jabs.
Round 2
Williams 10-9
Holmes opened well, but the Truth finished nice and strong.
Round 3
Williams 10-9
Holmes is struggling to find the range and timing he needs, but
the Truth is the more consistent.

Holmes being outpunched in this round. He came back a bit at the end but not enough.

Round 5
5 rounds gone and I haven't given Larry one of them.
He came on strong at the end of the round again but by then The Truth had already done too much good work.

Round 6
Holmes`had a go this round for the full three minutes and just nicked it I reckon.

Round 7
Williams dominates the first 21/2 minutes, then Larry finally lands a good right and dominates the last 30 seconds. Too little from the champ.
Williams - 10-9.

Round 8
Williams not loking so dominant now. Holmes jab is harder and he's also able to string a couple of punches together.
Very close round though as Williams is still landing leather.

Larry getting to work now!
The Truth is looking a bit ragged and Holmes is starting to pound that body.

Round 10
Larry wouldn't or couldn't continue the momentum he built up in Round 9.
Back to a jabbing match and Carl was the one landing them.

Round 11
Carl is adept at blocking or parrying Holmes main weapon, the jab.
And when Holmes does have some success Williams fights ring back.

Round 12
Much better round for The Champ. Some lovely shots including a peach of a left hook about 30 secs into the round and a thudding right hand to the body near the end that had the Truth involuntarily raising his left leg.
Holmes needs a big finish to make this fight close though.

Round 13
Holmes pursuing but not landing. Williams content to back peddle and stick larry with the jab. Good enough for me.

Round 14
One of those rounds where one guy lands many more blows and the other guy lands far less but the somewhat harder ones.
Right at the end of the round The Truth's knees dipped under a Holmes barrage.
