Odds & Ends Factoids

Post by Ric »

Here's one from the Jan. 17, 1926 SPOKANE SPOKESMAN-REVIEW newspaper:
In 1925, there had been 9,500 bouts held in the United States.
In eleven months California had had 1,076; NY 2,000; Ohio 1,000+; Pennsylvania 1,800; Wisconsin 600; and 2,000 elsewhere.

The paper said "bouts," Matt. (Or at least that's what my notes say.)
And I inferred this meant pro bouts. As you know, in Washington state at the time, the figure would be a big fat zero (because prize-fighting was illegal), although hundreds of fights were fought in the state in 1925 as "amateur" bouts between pros.

I would guess that it meant cards. I have a feeling you could count all the California bouts in the database at the moment in 1925, and come very close to that figure if not surpass it.

good list

Post by robert.snell1 »

Thats some list you put together Barry. As you say if only !!

as it happens my dad had a fight on that day, however it was in Canada so doesn't count - he lost by the way.

As far as I am aware it is not possible to list the fights for a year which is a pity
