We did appreciate his 'orange juice' story.

I have not 'built up' Ali to bring down Dempsey. I was merely pointing
out the knocks against Dempsey...yes he was great and is a legend of
boxing. BUT he still has his faults as a fighter and champion (as they
all do).

Now to suggest that Willard was a better....er championship 'bookend',
than Liston is your own agenda. The fact remains and always shall, that
Ali...love him or hate him...had one of, if not the best defences compared
to other champions.....his second reign is by far the more stacked.

Would you be interested in running your comparison of Dempsey's opponent
vs Ali's 1977-1978 title challengers ?
I do genuinely enjoy them, even if I do not agree with how you see the
fights playing out.

- Why do I have to run the matchups? I understand you want to be fair to Ali, the last 4 matches of any relevance to his championship pomp is Alfredo the Magnifico Evangelista, Shavers, Spinks x2.

Vs Dempsey's Firpo, Tunney, Sharkey, Tunney. In order, Firpo whacks out Alfredo post haste in a fan favorite. If nothing else back then, Alfredo was game for a go. Tunneyvery carefully sets up Shavers for a mid to late KO. Footwork and a jab rivaling prime Ali the key. Sharkey KOs Spinks by midrounds in a fan friendly slugfest that sees Leon down multiple times, and finally, Tunney blacks out Leon's eyes before dropping him cold mackeral floppin'.

Why does it always have to be so much pain for you gents when you actually break down Ali's career? Why not compare Ali 74-75 where he made his legend? He was otherwise gonna be forever out of Fleischer's top 10 by future lineal Nat subservients with nary an original thought nor a zest for combat in their dreary lives.

I'd like to go back to being a fan of Ali, but I just can't worship at the church of Ali.

Of most the HW champions, Ali is one of those I least prefer to watch
fight. That does not mean he was not a great chamion.
I do however respect his talents and his willingness to face all from
his era.....who did he avoid ?

I am happy for you to break down any champion and go over there
title defences. I myself like to do this.

You do not have to run the match ups, I just am interested in reading
how you see the fights playing out.

Never accused you of being a hugger and never said Ali was anything less than a great champ and I do have a great deal of respect for the man. It's like Mr. Field, it's his Church I have a problem with. He was one of the most flawed fighters in history, but on his day near unbeatable, near being the operative context. Anyone is beatable.

I'd say London/Mildenberger did zip to earn a shot. Cooper rematch, Williams and Folley can be forgiven for being given denied opportunities and paydays. Plug in some of Frazier's opponents in this period or Doug Jones rematch for a more respectable prime lineup of contenders.

He avoided the 4th Norton fight, his mandatory, though can be forgiven at that stage for not wanting anymore of Norton. If he's fighting Spinks and Evangelista, surely Holmes was near as deserving and more of a threat, more credible for the public even if he had zero name recognition. Bobick would've had the more impressive record and more name recognition as another one

Foreman rematch is the big one. It's been documented and cross referenced endlessly. He avoided what would have been the financially biggest fight in history at that time, or at least his team did and he didn't oppose it.

I'd love to have a time machine and take a video of the Young and Shavers fight and have Cosell slip some of those highlights in for him to review. He'd be as speechless as he was after Bobick KOed Holmes in the Olympic trials he would.

I recognise Dempsey as being talented. But I would not sit down and
watch his fights one after the other for an afternoon's entertainment.

I think his decimation of Willard is not as impressive as I am often told,
his war with Firpo is not as epic as I have been educated. His fight with
Gibbons has good Greco in it.

For me personally I prefer to watch his fight with Carpentier, sparring
Bill Tate and for appreciation of Tunney, the two fights with Gene.
