Upset Fights...
i got curious what were the odds of the biggest upsets in boxing history.
is there a site/link that i can check? i can't find anything in wiki.
Upsets like, Zahir Raheem - Erik Morales, Hassim Rahman - Lennox Lewis
and even the old ones, like, Azumah Nelson - Jeff Fenech
Thanks..

Re: Upset Fights...
Tyson was supposedly a 40-1 favorite over Douglas when the fought, although there were only a few books in Vegas taking that bet (so I hear). Ali was a big underdog to Liston in their first encounter, and even in the 2nd fight. He was also a big dog to Foreman. More recently, I know Baldomir was about a 17-1 dog to Judah.
But no, I'm not aware of a site that deals specifically with this.

Supposedly...
Douglas 42-1 against Tyson, 1990
Ali 3-1 against Foreman, 1974
Ali 3-1 against Liston, 1965
Ali 7-1 against Liston, 1964
Spinks, I recall, was around 7-1 when he upset Ali in '78.

Just to clarify, you picked all of those correctly at the time, then?

You were ten when you backed Benn to best McClellan?

I asked, "You backed all of those correctly at the time, then?"
You replied, "Yes, actually."
On your list was Benn-McClellan.

Which is the same thing, as I intended it.
When I say, "backed," it means predicted, not necessarily bet. I think we're on the same page now, regardless. You picked those fighters before the fights, but didn't bet on them (obviously, age was a factor), yes?

Re: Upset Fights...
Probably just a regional difference (Australia, England). To me, "backed" is the same as predicted, called, projected ahead of time, etc, &, if I'm talking bets, I specifically use that word.
You should get more credit for calling Pacquiao against De La Hoya (revisionists have made it seem as though the outcome was a foregone conclusion, when, in reality, I remember relatively few picking against De La Hoya).

Re: Upset Fights...
Baldomir Vs Judah
Robinson Vs Gatti
Hopkins Vs Trinidad (Hindsight says we should've all seen it coming, but I guess the majority must've been backing Trinidad.)

I also (pensively) picked Hatton to beat Pacquiao. I thought a big part of that would be sheer desperation. I had my doubts about whether Hatton could beat Pacquiao, but he looked good against Malignaggi, & I thought desperation was the clincher. Hatton, I was sure, would want it more than Pacquiao.
No one picked the nature of the fight, I don't think, though.

Re: Upset Fights...
It's seven years since it happened, but I am still bragging about my best-ever pick (Forrest, a heavy underdog going in, will defeat the champion, Mosley, via a lopsided UD. Mosley is tough, & he will need to be, as Forrest will batter him quite severely at stages. I believe Mosley will hit the deck for the first time in his, to-date, outstanding career)
If only they could all be like that one...but it took place a meagre three months before my 18th birthday, so no money for me.

Re: Upset Fights...
I picked, backed and bet on Hatton against Pacquiao. That's among the worst I've ever had. Except for the 8 bills I dropped on a 15 second UFC KO a couple weeks ago. Nothing will top that.
I won huge on Pac/Dlh & smaller on Hops/Pavlik.
There have been so many monstrous upsets in this sport, this thread could have new entries for eternity.
Off the top of my head and in no particular order these are five that absolutely blew me away.
Duran/Laing
Ali/Spinks
Hearns/Barkley
Tyson/Douglas
Ferguson/Mercer

Hey, SaadOffthedeck,
Did you ever see Saad fight?
I saw him go CRASHING to the canvas more than once in fights at the Spectrum.

collins, the homosexually fixated nephew of one of the owners of boxrec, has arrived to trash this thread.Collins2000 wrote:In your wet dreams maybe.granberry wrote:Hey, SaadOffthedeck,

collins will now turn this thread into a part of the toilet that he makes of boxrec.
And with the full approval of boxrec's so-called 'moderators'.

No, at that point I only went to a couple live fights at the Baltimore Arena & Closed Circuit stuff. Sure as hell watched them all. Don't think my Dad thought much about a road trip to Philly with his young son. Wish he would have.

Not for odds I wouldn't think, best you can do is dig up contemporary preview/fight reports and see if the odds are in there.tanibanana wrote:so i guess there is no link/site i can check

Yaqui Lopez (who fought Matt twice) summed up Franklin/Saad:
"He's just a great puncher. He has nothing else."
Jerry Martin told me Matt hit far harder than anyone else in the 175 division that he ever fought or sparred with, including Marvin Johnson, Eddie Gregory, Dwight Braxton, Michael Spinks, and several others.

He had more than that. His stamina was off the charts and his will was unbreakable.

He had no boxing ability.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:He had more than that. His stamina was off the charts and his will was unbreakable.
Some of the 'stamina' came from what the muslims who ran him once he got the title put on his mouthpiece after 9 or 10 rounds. Ask Milt Bailey.
The Jerry Martin fight finished him. He took such a bad physical beating in that fight that he never won a fight against a good fighter the rest of his career.
Everybody in Philly considered him a "nice guy." He was good natured and didn't have any nastiness in him. I remember Wesley Mouzon saying to me, on the same night his fighter Dwight Braxton had just beaten Franklin for the second time. "He's a nice guy." I wasn't quite sure what that had to do with anything, but Mouzon repeated it several times.
I saw Franklin fight at the Spectrum against Dale Grant (more a blown up middleweight), Yaqui Lopez (their first fight), and Billy Douglas. Matt went CRASHING to the canvas against Douglas. got a long count from the ref, who later stopped the fight in Matt's favor in the very next round in a disputed ending. Poor Billy Douglas always got the short end of the stick in Philly.
Re: Upset Fights...
Hey gran, would a rematch of Saad and Mustafa have ended any differently? Or did Mustafa (Eddie) just have his number?

Re: Upset Fights...
Louis against Schmeling was a great upset, of course. Few former Heavyweight champions were ever able to regain their titles, including Louis against a former Middleweight, but some were able to carry on with their careers and scored some good wins. Schmeling takes the cake in that department, and this win was probably more of a career definer than his actual title reign had been; he had won the title on a foul and then lost it in a robbery. Louis' fans pride Joe for having had a seemingly perfect style with no flaws, but Schmeling was a keener observer. Louis would be open for the right hand for his entire career, but against Schmeling he did not even have a "pretense at defense" for Schmeling's right hand bombs, and Louis with his average chin could not survive those kind of shots and it was a rather devastating knockout with Louis having the fight beaten out of him. It was a big night for Schmeling, and even the indignities of Louis being named "fighter of the year" and Schmeling unfairly being deprived of a title shot against Braddock where he likely becomes the first two-time Heavyweight champion could not spoil it. Braddock instead defended his title against the fighter Schmeling had crushed, and by the time Max met Louis two years later for the second time he was 32 and Louis had improved. Louis threw some great kidney shots in the fight, some of the best in boxing history and some of the most ignored. Louis would escape other disastrous upsets throughout his title reign, one against a fighter who was under 25 pounds lighter than him (the official weights were distorted to make them look closer in size) and the other in a gift against Walcott, who dropped him with two right hands.

Paragraphs are your friend.
Or maybe you don't want anyone to read what you write and that's why you jumble it all together.
