Henry Maske to play Max Schmeling in new movie!

Post by Flump »

Undefeated IBF middleweight champion King Arthur Abraham and his coach Ulli Wegner made a brief trip to Zagreb this week where the shooting for the Max Schmeling movie has begun. With Henry Maske impersonating one of the biggest German sporting heroes of all time, Abraham will play Richard Vogt, Schmeling’s last opponent. Just as in real life, Ulli Wegner will be in his corner. “It is a great honor and pleasure for both of us to be a part of this movie,” King Arthur said. “Working at the set is almost as hard as a training session. But it was a lot of fun.” The movie, which will hit cinemas in 2010, is directed by Uwe Boll.

I saw Phantom Punch a few weeks ago. It was respectable, but only just. Vingh Rhames' performance was where the credible acting ended, & the portrayal of Liston as a whole was way, way too sympathetic.

This is purely selfish fan-talk on my part, but, recently, we've seen movies on Liston, Braddock, & now Schmeling. He had a remarkable life, & a remarkable career. I think it's time, gents...

I agree. A Foreman flick would be awesome. But in true limited minded Hollywood
fashion the film would no doubt end in 1974.

Would it be worth hearing Larry grumble about why he didn't get a movie deal for the next twenty years, though? :DD

Really? I think quite the opposite actually. Let's be honest, the average person these days only knows big George because of his grilling delights. At least any student to live in a college dorm for the last 10 years.

It would make for a good movie though.

- I posted this exact blurb from f.ghtnews a few weeks back in thread where Maske was mentioned.

Wonder when the Maske bashers are gonna show up and tell us again what a bum he was?

Obviously the movie to be a warm and fuzzy highlight for Max and a well deserved plum for Maske who is a modern day hero to Germans. Meanwhile the definitive bio on Max has yet to be written.

Schmelling in my opinion lived one of the most interesting and incredible
lives I can think of. We think of him as a boxer, sure. But his war time
service in the Luftwaffe Fallschirmjager (paratroopers), his efforts in
re building Germany, Business enterprises in the new Germany, heck
his advice to the Australia II crew before the America's cup, where he
helped to get them into shape....all make for one damned interesting tale.

'Scuse the intrusion, gents, but does that Liston movie capture the smart, quick one-liner side of Liston, GI? Or does it present him as just the glowering brute?

Even reporters at the time seemed to miss Sonny's way with a deadpan quip (or maybe they were just bricking it, I dunno...) but I've often laughed out loud at some of his one-liners in interviews where the journalist seemed to imply it was morally wrong to laugh along with him.

It did a decent job on that part of him, but the whole portrayal was obscenely sympathetic. It's doubtless worth delving into --- that he was more than just some cut-out monster --- but you would think he was Santa Claus, watching most of this film.

:box:

I was sceptic because I didn't like Boll-movies I watched so far.... but probably and hopefully this film will be not so bad... The trailer and the score let me hope that.
