Commonwealth Lightweight title.

Post by stujones »

Early it reported that this Kottey fella was fighting Lee McAllister for the title... now I read on Boxrec scheduled that Charlie Paul King (former prizefighter - in that dire lightweight tourney) is taking on McAllister.

If true, how is King sanctionable, but Tom Glover wasn't.

Sorry misread it... or read an old report.

Still begs the question, why king is sanctionable and not glover. Glover beat the recent EBU Lightweight champion.

I think Glover is a welter?
Sure he boxed thaxton at a higher weight and then boxed O'Donnell at welter didn't he?

He fought thaxton at welter.... lighter infact than 147.

Still beaten good fighters like Symmonds and Siddique. King's not done anything of note.

The double standards are amazing.... like not so long ago Billy Boyle fought Cleverley - HOW was he elligable/sanctionable.

On the O'Donnell vs Glover ITV4 show it was not made clear, at least to me, whether the board had turned Glover down as an acceptable opponent or not.

I think they were talking about silly demands from the board and delays getting back to them, or something like that, so Glover might not have actually been turned down.

I dont think Glover was turned down I think it was a case of the BBC not getting back to them in time and then wanting extortionate fees. Also, if it had have gone ahead as a title bout O'Donnel could have been stripped after failing to make the wieght by all accounts. Not sure whether there's any truth in it but i've heard O'Donnell came in 10st 7-3/4lbs.

Right lets make 1 thing clear: the BBBofC and the Commonwealth Council are 2 entirely separate entities, so this was not a Board decision. 2nd, the match wasnt sanctioned due to Phil Koteys position as mandatory challenger, having already waited ages. it was not a reflection of Glovers quality or lack of. 3rd, Boyle had beaten Shon Davies and King has a good looking record - its only a voluntary.

BBBoC and the Commonwealth council are as different as Sports Network and Sports Network(Europe)

BBBofC are based in Cardiff. Commonwealth council are run by Simon Block from France. Block is no longer an employee of the BBBofC. Or at least that's my understanding.

Correct. They are in contact but have no power over each other

i cant see how charlie king can get a title shot, he should fight johnny rocco in a rematch before he does anything else he clearly lost the first fight and everyone who was there apart from paul graham(the referee) knows this. so my opinion is that he doesnt deserve this shot at all! prediction on the fight macalister stops him about the 6th or 7th after a one sided fight.

Shocking match-up, but in Aberdeen they will fall for it especially as King is from the Glasgow area. Gilmour is shrewd and know's Lee's limitations but in the kid's homecity he has a mass following and we won't see him leave there for a good while.
