Is this true about ametuer boxers lieing about there ages?

Post by ohiochamp »

Rumors are going around that alot of ametuer boxers are lieing about there ages and entering tournaments in a younger age brackets. I heard some of the DC boxers were suspended? If this is true who was caught?

Hmm... I can't speak to that rumor in particular, but I can say, as registration guy for the Allegheny Mountain LBC, all registrations are supposed to require proof of birth (typically birth certificate, or notarized affadavit). This is both to verify age as well as citizenship (for representing the USA at international competitions).

That's not to say that some people haven't figured a way to lie and game the system, but in theory, this shouldn't happen.

It's up to the tournament admin people to check passbooks against entries and make sure boxers are in the same age divisions. At least that's what I did when I coordinated the Blue & Gold for 15 years.

Also, when I do paperwork prior to a show, we track the passbook ID, weight, DOB (which we get from the book), number of previous bouts (to ensure no obvious mismatches). This ensures that even in a non tournament bout, the difference in ages of the two boxers are legal. It also determines the length of the round in some cases.

I know in most states the passbook are filled out in pen. And i can see that its not that hard to change 1-1-96 to 11-1-96, 1-11-96, 4-1-96, etc. I just dont understand why do COACHES or FIGHTERS have to do that. And to blame someone else for the mistake is not excusable. I also hear that some fighters carry two passbooks. I know that one of my fighters had fought a boy at a show and the kid had 9fs when we fought him. And then 2yrs later, hes fighting novice at ringside. The funny thing is, even though i feel like he was cheating, he still lost. Its funny but sad.

It does happen but mainly it's the coaches who are responsible and know how old these kids are. It's hard for boxers to beat the system when they've been around for a long time. In those cases, the opponents from when they were in the right division highlight the discrepency. If two boxers box in a division for two years and then one advances to the next bracket and the other doesn't - flags will be raised I can tell you that even in a big city, the boxing community is small enough that a lot of the boxers grow up together and go to the same schools, birthday parties, etc. so when someone does try to cheat-their coaches aren't the only ones that notice. I saw a kid who fought in the same division of silver gloves for 4 years and he was from the Midwest. Turns out he was entered in the 10 year old division as an 8 year old. The thing about this sport is that people pay attention so if you lie, you have to keep up with the lie and eventually the truth comes out!!

Suspend the boxers and the coaches for a year or two and then maybe people will think twice about doing it.
