david price and derry matthews leave hayemaker

Post by neil hibbert »

DAVID PRICE and Derry Mathews are both looking for a new promoter after splitting from Hayemaker.

The former Solly stars, two of the city’s most high profile names, have both been released from their deals but insist that the terms were amicable.

After Setanta Sports went bust earlier this summer, Hayemaker promotions lost its TV deal and were always going to struggle to find work for their stable of fighters.

High earners like heavyweight hope Price and former world champion Mathews always seemed most likely to head for the exit, although Tony Dodson, Joe McNally and John Watson are remaining under David Haye’s promotional banner.

Derry said: “It’s a shame but after the TV went the shows dried up. I have left on good terms though and have no issues with anybody at Hayemaker, but I have to look after my own career.”

Both Mathews and Price hope to reveal more about their futures inside the next fortnight, but for the heavyweight sensation especially time is of the essence.

After fighting just once since returning from Beijing with his bronze medal last summer, Price needs to get busy.

The domestic division is there for the taking right now and if Price can secure six fights inside the next 12 months he’d be on the cusp of a title fight.

Price’s pro debut in March resulted in the sensational third round stoppage of Dave Ingleby, but he’s failed to capitalise on that dramatic start due to Hayemaker’s demise.

Meanwhile, McNally and Watson will both feature on Frank Maloney’s Bolton Arena bill on Friday, October 23.

Hayemaker star Ryan Rhodes features in the headline fight, challenging Jamie Moore for the European light-middle crown, and the outfit have managed to secure outings for the Scouse pair on the undercard.

Yeah- or if David Haye wins, and maintains some momentum with his career, then perpahs things might pick up. Hard to say.

I think Groves will be on the way soon as well to be honest. Who knows what happened to Maguire as well; last I saw of him he was storming off after beating Ancliff in Belfast. Sad to see and the Setanta bubble really did burst didn't it?

Price should go with Hatton, Maloney has loads of heavyweights already, Hennessey has Fury and Warren has Khan and the olympians. This would be a good move for both in my eyes.

Good news as Price needs to stay active and he's not going to get fights with Hayemaker as they dont have a TV deal I hope he goes to Maloney or Warren so he can be on SKY, im a bit in-different towards Derry Matthews he is a very skillful boxer who is domestic level but his chin doesnt hold up higher than that imo

I think that he can contend at European level, as well as domestic.

Hope they don't fold.... losing Price is a massive (no pun) blow. Whilst I don't think Price has the chin to go beyond domestic level. He is a big white and marketable.

Matthews is a good tickets seller with some ability. Also McGuire has gone back to the ams and I think thats a big loss.

Maguire ain't dedicated enough it's that simple, Talented yes!! Dedicated NO.. :(

Derry will find a promoter as he's a good ticket sellar..

I think the best place for Pricey is with Frank W but the final decision rests with the big people in the game.. :TU:

He's a good kid mate, I've trained with him on squads BUT he lacks mental focus and is very very immature. We all like to have a laugh but the kid is just wild, You can get away with that lifestyle in the am's but in the pro's it'll come back to bite you on the a$$ :(

Good luck to the kid though I hope he does well.. :TU:

I think Frank Maloney is a superb manager, and if Price signed there, he would like have no regrets in ten years.

Warren has a huge amount of experience building big names in the north west, though.

I suspect that Warren's long term access to TV might be paramount to the decision.

It's the most logical move for Price, he should go with Warren, join the rest of his team mates and play catch-up.

I feel a little bad for Matthews, glad it was all amicable.

I'm made up Price has left Hayemaker. Hopefully he will go with Warren and get regular fights, and also bring some decent shows to Liverpool. With regular fights, the Price-Fury rivalry could be built big, that's if Tyson doesn't get beat soon!

Can I ask why people think Hatton has more money than Hayemaker? The Sky deal is only a short term thing and they're not getting the sort of money Warren is. Yes they're backed by Goldenboy but so were Hayemaker.
I don't think people realise how expensive it will be getting Price fights and I don't think Hatton can afford it unless he headlines on Sky every time he fights.

They won't let Fury anywhere near Price, and Price is no better than top domestic standard IMO
