CARL FOGARTY: BBC fixed result for lewis
CARL FOGARTY claims he would have been Sports Personality of the Year in 1999 — but the BBC fixed the result so that Lennox Lewis won.
The former superbike world champion said yesterday: “It came from a good source at the BBC that I had more votes than Lewis.
“But, when the phone lines opened on the night, I wasn’t in the top six and couldn’t believe it.
“It was brushed under the carpet because the World Superbike Championships were not on BBC.”

Me for one. Over 120,000 of us turned up to watch Carl race at Brands Hatch in 1999 (and 1998, '97...), there were similar numbers at Donnngton and tens of thousands of Brits travelled to Assen, Holland, to watch him there.Goz wrote:Who gives a toss about Superbikes anyway....
He was certainly more of a draw for paying fans than any British boxer I can think of.
I expect Carl is right about the Beeb rigging the contest, I don't reckon it'd be the first time it happened either.
God knows why, but millions do. The races are always a sell out. I've never been interested.Kilburn wrote:I'd never try and belittle superbikes (unlike that Goz character 8) ) but I couldn't imagine how any rider could scoop an award like that.
In the grand scheme of things, who really does give a toss?
My Fiat Punto will do me. Come to think of it, I must get it back from Herbie...anyone seen him?
When I first read the headlines of this thread I was thinking it was about Adam Fogerty the former British Heavyweight contender.
