The 27-year-old, who won bronze for Ireland at the 2008 Games in Beijing, was found hanged in his flat in Bromley, south London, by Frank Maloney.
In a statement, the boxing promoter said: "It is very sad and unexpected.
"At this sad time my thoughts are with Darren's family and I hope their privacy at this very difficult time will be respected by the media.
"It is a tragedy for Ireland and the world of boxing."
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said Sutherland was pronounced dead at just after 3pm. His death is not being treated as suspicious. His family have been informed.
The fighter made his professional debut in Dublin last December, winning by a knockout.

but internet is uncontrolled media - so all it takes is for someone in the know to hear the word - and it could be on here before some relations even know.

I appologise to those whose posts I have edited. Hope people can understand, the sensitivity of the matter. I too thought originally it was a hoax, sadly it isn't, so previous posts questioning the authenticity of the original poster or speculating about Darren's death will be edited.
I can understand why such posts have been made, hope you can understand the reason why I am pulling them.
My thoughts are with the Sutherland family at this time.

Re: R.I.P. Darren Sutherland
Its a shame if this true, Quality boxer, RIP and all that but what a waste of so much talent.
Re: R.I.P. Darren Sutherland
What an absolute tragedy. Not only was Darren a fantastic boxer who would no doubt have gone on to win a world title but he also seemed like such a nice guy. Very softly spoken and always seemed so optimistic about the future. Just goes to show that you never know what is going on inside.
My deepest sympathies to his family and friends who must be in utter despair right now.
RIP Darren. You will never be forgotten.

Re: R.I.P. Darren Sutherland
Beautiful and fitting tribute. The word tragic is grossly over-used these days, but in this case, it's entirely appropriate. RIP.Gareth wrote:Rest In Peace
From all at Eastside Boxing Club and all at Team Alio, you will be sadly missed, you could have been a force to be reckoned with.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends at this sad sad time.
Donations will be sent once details are publicly announced.
"God looked around his garden
and found an empty space
he then looked down
upon the earth,
and saw your tired face.
he put his arms around you
and lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful
he always takes the best.
he knew that you were suffering
he knew you were in pain
he knew that you would never
get well on earth again.
he saw the road was getting rough,
and the hills were hard to climb.
so he closed your weary eyelids,
and whispered "peace be thine"
it broke our hearts to loose you
But you did NOT go alone,
for part of US went with you
the day god called you home. "
Re: R.I.P. Darren Sutherland
I'm totally shocked by this. I didn't know Darren but I'd seen his fights and interviews and he just seemed like one of those lovely people who 'get it' and are liked by all. He was young, hugely talented, humble and willing to work hard.
Well, in the 27 years he was here for, he achieved a huge amount and gave a lot of people a lot of pleasure.

I agree - because its just stirring up they know something you dont - but they wont reveal it.
Better to have just kept silent - unless you are gonna tell the whole truth.
I wouldnt specaulte anyway - because only the lad himself will truely know what his own personal demons were and his reasons for doing what he did.
