Jeff Harding update.

Post by KOJOE90 »

There was a thread on here a few months ago about how former WBC Light-Heavyweight Champion Jeff Harding had fallen on hard times and had developed a bad drink problem.

Harding of course was the Australian hardman who had three terrific fights with our own Light-Heavy hardman Dennis Andries.

Well hopefully this has given him a lift in spirits.

Ex-world champions Jeff Harding and Rocky Mattioli headlined a list of former boxers and identities who were last night inducted into the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame.

The boxing fraternity gathered in Melbourne to honour this year's group of 10 inductees who have been chosen from more than 100 nominees by boxing historians and commentators from around the country.

Mattioli, former world light-middleweight champion, topped the nominations in the modern fighters' category with 45 votes and Harding, who twice won the light-heavyweight title, collected 39 votes.

Former IBF super featherweight world champion Lester Ellis and world middleweight contender Tony Mundine were overlooked.

The other inductees were Peter Jackson (pioneer), George Barnes and Tommy Burns (veterans), Bill Lang, Hughie Dwyer (old timers), Sam Langford (international), Ron Casey, John Wren (non-participants).

I hope so to, it always pains me when a fighter has to sell his belts, like another Light-Heavyweight warrior Saad Muhammad had to recently. Hey Harding V Saad, that would have been a war, not for the faint hearted!

I have the Harding V Andries fights on tape, and I urge any younger fans who have not seen them to add them to your tape collection.

Harding is indeed well remember on these shores.

All three Harding V Andries fights are worth picking up, trust me. They were two ultra tough fighters who just when straight at each other. They both showed massive heart and determination in these fights.

Benn V Wharton is ok.
Eubank V Wharton is better, possibly one of Eubanks best performances IMO.

Andries used to throw his right like he was lobbing a cricket ball, but him and Jeff combined to make a really excellent trilogy...hidden classics
really.

Wharton comes from the outskirts of York and is of travelling stock. I have heard (unconfirmed) that he was better on the cobbles than in the ring - can anyone give me more information on this side of Wharton's fighting prowess?
