Paul McCloskey Vs Souleymane M'Baye 06/11

Post by Deno1986 »

Paul gets a shot at M'Baye's EBU Light Welterweight title in Belfast on the 6th of November. With Rogan v Sexton taking place in The Odyssey on the same night I presume this bout will take place at The Kings Hall.

M'Baye looked poor against McCloskeys late replacement Colin Lynes in his last bout but he is still a very dangerous and experienced opponent. It is worth noting that McCloskey stopped Lynes inside nine when they met back in December. I cant predict anything but a McCloskey UD. Would be interesting to see McCloskey-Khan in a year or two.

For Irish boxing fans, there is a good card on October 24th in the National Stadium featuring some good up and coming Irish prospects such as Eddie Hyland, Rob Long, Anto Fitzgerald and more. It will also be interesting to see the Irish based Cuban Super Middleweight prospect Luis Garcia fighting.

McCloskey for me all the way in this one, I thought he would win in France but was worried he would get jobbed but with home advantage I can't see him losing as even with some of the strange decisions we have lately, he should do more than enough to put most of the rounds out of reach.

M'Baye is a decent if not spectacular puncher but is so lazy these days, he really has just a punchers chance for me.

Although everything points to McCloskey on points here, however, when/if he gets into a rhythm he may land enough to possibly stop the Frenchman.

You are right though about the Khan angle being interesting in a year or so if no one has got to Khan's chin first it would be an interesting fight, not sure the Khan team would go down that route, it may be upto McCloskey to force the issue by taking on recognised world level opponents.

Why are they putting this fight on the same day as Rogan vs Sexton?

Dont ask me Horse, its a strange one, they would both sell out Belfast on their own. Maybe its some promotional rivalry and someone is trying to frighten allegedly although I just checked Sky Sports Live Schedule on their text service and they have McCloskey vs M'baye scheduled but there is no sign of Rogan v Sexton. Is there something we dont know about?

Its on EBU's website that Barry Hearn's Matchroom sports are the promoters. Looks like Hearn is putting the skids under Warren!

ridiculous decision to put the show the same night as Rogan v Sexton. That fight has the TV coverage and having seen the first fight plenty of people will flock to Rogan Sexton II.

I would suspect they will change the date but remember Rogan v Sexton was rearranged because of an injury to Rogan I think, so maybe they are just mulling over a new date.

I want to watch both of these fights. I can't see the sense in putting them both on the same night.

If both fights are meant to be on Sky, then surely Sky will make one of the promoters change dates.

November 6th was always a matchroom boxing date for Skysports and they have bid and got the M'Baye fight which presumably has pleased Sky to have a EBU title fight on live. Following the postponement of Rogan/Sexton in Oct, the rival company then announced they were switching it to Nov 6th as well.

Sky appear to have stood firm with there commitment to Matchroom and rightly so, it remains to be seen if common sense prevails, as usual the boxing fan is left in the middle and unable to be in two places at once.

Not one for slagging companies off really but to switch to a new date for Rogan/Sexton that you knew was already taken with a Sky show for Matchroom smacks of arrogance for me.

I want to see Rogan/Sexton as much as the next man but I hope Matchroom keep there plans and date solid and other arrangements are made for Rogan/Sexton, so the Irish fans can cheer both there boys on and we get to see both fights live over here in blighty.

Thats some good research work there Global, agree with you with regards to Matchroom keeping their card on the 6th and hopefully Rogan v Sexton is switched to the week after. Really want to see both of them fight. :TU:

SKY is a big issue but just from a ticket selling point of view it makes no sense as you are dragging the same clientelle away from one fight or another - the same people who would attend both and are now split.

With or without TV, you still don't want gaping empty seats and half full arenas and with the Tyson thing on at the Waterfront Hall as well it is ridiculous! Cutting off the nose to spite the face.

Hopefully someone will reconsider this move.

Hearn has put on a good few of McCloskeys fights particulary the British Title bouts and Im pretty sure he is his main promoter. It is easier to have a British promoter when you are chasing British titles and Commonwealth titles. However Peters also has some rights to promote McCloskey in Irish bouts. As far as I know Hearn and Peters have a good relationship so conflict isn't going to be likely. It is similiar to John Duddy and Andy Lee who have American promoters but when they come back to fight in Ireland Peters promotes them although Manny Steward fancies himself as a bit of a promoter  :box:

That's a very good concept. Much better for all parties if the boxer can increase their exposure.

Looking forward to the National Stadium show as well you mentioned. Was speaking to Phil Sutcliffe last night and he is offering cheaper ticket prices and family deals to get the kids in. Really looking forward to seing Luis Garcia in the flesh and also the Fitzgerald-Long rematch. Phil reckons Eddie Hyland is headlining with the IBF belt thingy and Oisin Fagan could appear.

A good domestic value show.

6th November is the only date at trhe venuie for the Rogan return. Sky have refused an alternative date for McCloskey so Hearn had no choice but to stay on 6th. Blame Sky not the promoters in this case.

The fans are the losers in this mess.

I wonder if Sky will do a double header, as they used to do. Just show the main events from each venue?
