HE DANCED under the high roof of an empty arena, looking for rhythm, not effect.
A spotlight trained down and a few workers stood off in the background and Danny Green looked around at this great big arena he plans to sell out in December, and began to move.
He began lightly, just small head feints and half-weight punches.
Here, against his shadow, it begins.
Sydney has won the right to host Green's December 2 fight against Roy Jones Jr, beating interest from around Australia, primarily Melbourne and Perth.
Yesterday, he walked into Acer Arena and looked around.
"Big,'' he said.
The last time he was here was for a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert.
Yesterday, empty, it appeared larger. In many ways, the fight against Jones also looms larger than what is real.
Jones dominated the sport in the 1990s, and in 2003 became the first middleweight to win the heavyweight world title in more than 100 years. It appeared God had put on a boxing glove.
"He's a superstar,'' Green said. "I had his posters on my wall in the gym.'' Jones was so good the likes of Budd Schulberg, the man of letters, were beginning to ask whether Jones was as good as Sugar Ray - and the original, Sugar Ray Robinson.
At which point Antonio Tarver promptly hit him with a wild left that stopped him to kill that argument stone dead.
Two more losses and Jones looked finished.
Green understands Jones's losses better than most, and why they might have happened.
"He only got stopped twice and he had come back down from heavyweight,'' he said.
"He had to shed a lot of weight off a frame that doesn't carry any extra weight.
"It weakens you, it physically weakens you. I've been there.''
After fighting at light-heavyweight Green lost a rematch to German super-middleweight Markus Beyer and then to Anthony Mundine, again after fighting at light-heavy.
He has since moved up to cruiserweight permanently, while Jones got comfortable there also.
In doing so, Jones resurrected himself with wins against Felix Trinidad and, more recently, a win against Jeff Lacy.
Highlighting his return, the Lacy win also hailed the return of old moves, reinforcing the belief that he is back.
"Roy Jones Jr is a threat,'' Green said.
So much, few rate Green a chance, and the thoughtless money will go easily on Jones this time around.
It overlooks Green's eternal ability to knock out any man that stands in front of him. If he does find trouble, it is in the ones that dance away. That is worth remembering.
While Jones showcased his born-again talents against Lacy, he remained in front of Lacy through most of the 10 rounds it lasted.
He simply won't last there against Green.
Moving under the spotlight at Acer Arena yesterday, Green refused to reveal his fight strategy. There will be several plans, he said.
He won't be saying any more today either, when Jones is beamed in via satellite much like he was when the fight was announced.
Back then it was all friendly. Jones even invited Green back to his house after the fight they shared the card in the States.
Green would not confirm it yesterday, but it is believed negotiations have soured relations since.
Instead, he focuses on the fight ahead.
It is 11 weeks away, and he will begin slowly, working on finding rhythm first, and then effect.

Danny Green and Roy Jones Jnr confirm December world title fight
By staff writers
September 17, 2009 Danny Green and Roy Jones Jnr have confirmed their highly anticipated super fight will be held in Sydney at Acer Arena, on Wednesday, December 2.
Three-time world champion Green and Jones Jnr ended months of speculation today by putting pen to paper on a deal that will see the Green Machine put his IBO cruiserweight world title on the line and Jones Jr take his first professional fight outside the USA, in what is being billed as the biggest fight ever on Australian soil.
Sydney’s Acer Arena, with the support of the NSW State Government, staved off fierce competition from Brisbane, Melbourne and Green’s home town of Perth to secure the event.
Green (27 wins, 3 losses) dubbed Jones Jnr "the best fighter to ever visit our shores" at a joint media conference held simultaneously in Sydney and Pensacola Florida, and then started the war of words.
"I’m not thinking about anything else now apart from Roy Jones Jnr," Green said.
"There is no doubt he is one of the sport’s all time greats, but at the end of the day he is coming out here to knock me out on my turf, in front of my family.
"That’s all the motivation I need. I’ve been in this sport too long and worked too hard to have it all taken away, and come December I’ll show Roy and the rest of the world the champion I am."
Eight-time world champion Jones Jnr was also on the front foot, making it clear that he sees Green as the stepping stone to some monster bouts in America, against the likes of Wladimir Klitschko or a big money rematch with nemesis Bernard Hopkins.
Despite the obvious temptation of a big dollar fight in the US, Jones Jnr is pursuing the only belt missing from his cabinet, the cruiserweight title, that currently sits in Green’s West Australian home.
"Danny is a good fighter, but he's not me," Jones Jnr said.
"He saw what I did to Jeff Lacy in Biloxi and I saw what Mundine did to him, so by my count this is going to be a tough night at the office for Danny Green. I’m on my way to the top baby and if it means making a detour to Australia then so be it, but I’m coming over to put on a show and leave with another world title around my neck."
Main Event channel 518, and Fox Sports venues will show the fight live and exclusive around Australia. Tickets will go on sale on Wednesday, September 30 through Ticketek.

Re: Jones v Green announced today
It must be pretty difficult finding a job in today's economic climate. I sympathise
Next interview when they ask you "where do you see yourself in 5 years time?" reply "probably unemployed again"

The only reason i didn't go to the Geale v Mundine fight was that no one I knew could afford it, or just lack of interest in the fight because they didn't know who Geale was
I'll be fucked if i miss this, still very bitter that i didn't see Geale v mundine.
Re: Jones v Green announced today
Recently I've been complaining to my workmate about the boss working us like dogs. Considering your circumstances I thinkI'll shut up for a while. Best of luck with it all. Something's bound to turn up. If not, PM Eddieshredder, he's a man about town these days and I'm he'll set one up for ya
Re: Jones v Green announced today
At the very least the BoxRec blokes could meet up at the Brewery before the fight. Depending on where ben and toppo are staying though I reckon it might be better to start in the city where we can drink glass schooners for $4 instead of $6 plastic cups at the Brewery...Hounddawg wrote:I'm going alone at the moment, anyone interested in catching up let me knowben k wrote:250 seems alright, Who else is going to the fight. Dangerous fight for Roy's legacy, but Roy thinks he "zees somedink." to quote the late great Max Schmeling. Of course he forgot his spectacles against SuperJoe and had to pay the Welsh piper his due.

Re: Jones v Green announced today
Met Danny in Biloxi, MS when I went to see them fight last month. He was a super good guy and I was very impressed with how he carries himself and the company he keeps. I wish him well.
However, in this fight I see Jones most likely winning by a UD. While Danny is a very good technician, he lacks in the speed and reflex dept. He also doesn't have the workrate of say, Calzaghe or Glen Johnson. Thats what it takes to beat Jones at this stage.
All in all, I call it a clear but close UD for Jones. Danny will be in it for the simple fact that Roy has slowed down and is more on the defensive, post-heavyweight, but I don't see him winning. Jones may even score a TKO if he can cut Green. He seems like somebody who wouldn't stand up to allot of accurate shots to me.
Green will need to land a home run shot to win in my opinion and that's not completely out of the question either.

Me and a mate are heading over from the west and will definately want to cath up for an ale or two. From my understanding it is a similar set to SEC, so the seats (cheaper versions, elevated) won't be too far back.........bring it on !!BroughtonRulesRefuge wrote:- Gonna be a great night for Aussies in boxing if Green can make a go at it.
