He'll look fleshier. His skin will have more water in it, and as a result he'll look fleshier. So, to clarify, I meant worse in the sense that his flabbiness will be more apparent, not anything to do with how healthy he looks.

Yeah, but why would he have more water in him?

I highly doubt that Marquez was not allowed to weigh as much as Mayweather.

Wow, PBF looks as drained as ever and came in overweight for the first time in his career(no doubt he tried to get the 2 pounds off but couldn't). 2 years out of the sport can do that. He has to pay 600k to Marquez...

Floyd is drained here, we could be looking at an upset if JMM has carried his power up.

Actually Horse, Marquez didn't even know Mayweather would be as big as he's turned out to be, & the stipulations in the contract (getting it changed after Marqy-Marq has signed & delivered it) frankly takes the piss. This is beginning to reek of a particularly shitty thing to do.

From ESPN:
At Mayweather's request, nobody would speak publicly about the contract weight throughout the promotion that kicked off in early May and continued into the fall when the fight was postponed from July 18 because of a Mayweather rib injury.

However, several sources with direct knowledge of the contract told ESPN.com all along that the contract maximum weight was 144 pounds, three less than the 147-pound welterweight maximum.

But after Friday's weigh-in, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer finally addressed the issue, telling ESPN.com, "The fight was contracted as a welterweight fight with an agreed upon weight of 144 pounds. However, there were pre-negotiated weight penalties built in."

Schaefer would not disclose the dollar figure, but another source with direct knowledge of the contract told ESPN.com that the penalty was $300,000 per pound if either fighter was overweight.

According to the source, the Marquez camp knew Wednesday night that Mayweather would not make weight because Mayweather's team made overtures to Golden Boy Promotions in an effort to have Marquez agree to change weight on the bout agreements to be filed with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

However, Marquez's contract had already been filed reading 144 pounds, according to commission executive director Keith Kizer. But Kizer said the bout agreement was retrieved from the commission by Golden Boy Promotions and changed to 147 with Marquez initialing it.

& Lirva, or whatever you're calling yourself these days, Marquez is getting knocked out. We all knew that beforehan; however the extra little wrinkles are beginning to bug me.

I am Optical D, not Lirva.

Do you think PBF willingly would pay 600k to Marquez without trying to get the last two pounds off?

I don't know what to think of this one.

Marquez looks bloated and this could kill his speed and timing. On the other hand, a huge opportunity for him, at the end of his career, you'd think.

Mayweather looks drained in the face, is coming off a long layoff, but we'll not know until the night.

If Mayweather had made the 144, it would have weakened him sufficiently for it to be another of those catchweights where bigger man comes in empty and loses.

These are two guys that probably shouldn't or wouldn't normally fight one another. I don't like Mayweather's antics, it's unprofessional and he didn't make the weight so as to give himself a much better chance of winning. Then again, the whole weight stipulation was ambiguous in the first place.

I wouldn't read into that too much because we are used to seeing Marquez dry at weigh ins. I couldn't find any stats but hasn't he come in to the ring recently on fight night in the low 140s? He got hit a lot against the volume of Diaz but went on to nearly decapitate him with that perfect uppercut in the 9th. He's old, but old and wise - and despite what people are saying I can't see him being on the wrong side of a one sided beating. He will make it all the way to the final bell.

On the other hand, like other posts and topics have alluded to it could just be wishful thinking on my half because I want to see Marquez win! :TU: :box:

Marquez had drained water for the weigh in. He said he was expecting to weigh something like 150 lbs in the ring.

Nxt fight, if it's against manny, will, of course, be a different story.
What I love about this, is that Mayweather has to fight on whether he wants to or not, because of his financial troubles.
What's to love about a guy having to supposedly box on because of financial woes? I think its an all too familiar pattern in Boxing & has been for a long time! The sooner that changes the better it will look on the sport!

I don't think Marquez looks bloated at all, that single photo is a bit misleading, go and look at the full report from the weight in on fightnews.

What is noticable and surprising is that side on, Marquez looks deeper in the chest than Floyd, Floyd's shoulders and arms are bigger, but he doesn't look much the bigger man at all.

Be interesting to see what Marquez weighs come fight night, I would be surprised if it's more than 147 myself, don't think he looks that cut and drawn at the weight.

Mayweather for me, looks a lot more dry than I've seen him before at a weighin.

i don't know, in this era, it just doesn't look right with a fighter looking "full" at the weigh in. he'll look even fuller in the fight and in my experience as a spectator looking powerful at the weigh in doesn't always translate to being effective on fight night.

i hope i am wrong, i hope marquez wins and that he moves up in weight as well as manny pacquiao. i just feel that he was looking a little wide at lightweight, when he was stopping casamayor and juan diaz in brilliant performances.

i wonder what mayweather will be like after the time off, and if even coming in at 146 has sapped him a little. i hope marquez jumps right on him, tests him right away.

ideally, mayweather would have kept boxing and be fighting the likes of paul williams; and marquez readying for a 3rd epic with manny pacquiao. but this is boxing, in all its catchweight glory, and a massive chance for juan manuel marquez.

I wouldn't be surprised. If you knew it was going to be a real struggle to lose those two pounds and would significantly harm your chances of victory $600,000 is a small price to pay. Mayweather is probably going to be making what $20 million?, $600,000 isn't much to get a big advantage over your opponent.
If he really hurt himself getting down and then lost he would lost his perfect record, would have in a fight he was heavily favored but moreover the mega mega payday of a fight against Pac. $600,000 ain't much when you could lose say $40 million from fighting Pacquiao.
Consider if Cotto had to pay $300,000 for every pound he was over weight v Pacquiao. Coming in at 147 and paying $900,000 might be worth it, if it meant he was much healthier, didn't have to struggle to come down and dehydrate himself etc.

I doubt mayweather is getting 20 million to fight Marquez, surely the fight isn't that big. I've not looked at any figures, but that sounds a tad high to me.

It will indeed, but cannot see this selling as many as the DLH or Hatton fights, Marquez is popular with mexicans, but he's not at the level of a Morales or Barrera in terms of popularity.

It's usually at around 4 AM, this time of the year. As Alex says, the Katsidis fight is going to be good, so maybe start watching from 3 AM onwards if 2 is too early? You might catch the end of the Katsidis fight then. John-Juarez should be just before Mayweather-Marquez.

PPV show starts at 5.30pm on the West Coast. +8 hrs for GMT.

Fight is in Vegas, probably start around 7/8 pm which equates to 3/4 am in the UK.
