Interesting.

I saw this in the paper last night as well along with 'an hour's training session' breakdown - didn't look too taxing, I have to say

I thought the article was okay but most importantly it was good to see boxing get possitive coverage - especially as it was a double page spread.

The workout sounded taxing to me but I'm a lazy git.

You'd be surprised at how tame some boxer's workouts might seem when you read them. However, when you consider that they do it six days out of 7, and they have two training sessions a day. I reckon it's the regularity of training that is often overlooked. Spending 3 hours a day doing cardiovascular training is pretty hard going.

Roy Jones' workouts were surprisingly light for a guy who looked in such excellent shape. At the other extreme is a guy like Kostya Tszyu who does double what most other fighters seem to do.

I read that and the session Danny did there was a 'light' workout but remember, he's just under six weeks away from the fight (not sure when this workout was).

Also, reading that, you don't get any idea of the intensity. That workout would have had no 30 second breaks, the only rest would have been as he went from bag to rope, to floor exercise and Jimmy would have been making him keep a fast pace.

I think you only had to look at the Tyson fight to see how well conditioned Danny was. I mean he came back a serious Tyson onslaught that finishes all but the best heavyweights and he finished him with a 20-plus punch combination... and he was 19stone!!!

I asked Jimmy if it helped being able to spend a whole five weeks (before the tyson fight) with Danny, away from his family where he could just concentrate on the fight and get inside Danny's head. He agreed totally. I got the impression that Danny training in seclusion with good-quality sparring, has taken Danny to a higher level.

Not sure if he will win, but with the time he's got to prepare for Klitschko, I expect Danny to give him a very rough night's work and wouldn't be surprised if his right hand, and not Klitschko's, actually gets the job done for him, perhaps even early.

Yep. I actually interviewed Danny a few weeks back and he said he was in terrific shape because he'd had so much longer to prepare.

Nice fella isn't he? Very respectable and polite and although he is know means a mate (I used to train at the Kronk and Jimmy Mac let me train at his Camden gym a few years ago, that's how I got to know him), he always recognises me and gives me a hug when I see him and he's the kind of guy you want to do well because you don't see things going to his head, in fact, it's the opposite and he will actually try harder to keep his feet on the ground.

He's quite a physical specimen too. As wide as he is tall and you don't quite get to appreciate how big his legs or shoulders are until you stand next to him in the gym.

Still, I was shocked at how much bigger Klitschko looked in Boxing News the other week. He looked massive!!!

Danny's not that tall, but he sure is broad. He has the biggest shoulders I've ever seen on a heavyweight, absolutely fornicating enormous.

He also surely has the beefiest calves outside of Sumo.

agree entirely Dirt, although I only see Danny a couple of times a year and am by no means a close friend, he always makes the effort to come over and say hello. a real gentleman!!!

Danny like Hasim rahman, isnt that tall but has an incredibly thick back and huge shoulders as James said. The guy is very strong and has great cardio as his 6m 10 second 2000 meter row testifies

Very similar builds those two, well spotted. Rahman is another one who carries the weight very well.

I looked at the concept 2 rowing site, and Danny's time was not far off the world record for a man his age and weight class, which is fornicating impressive.

Exactly... people go on about him being slow on his feet, but he moves very well when he wants to for such a big lad. I mean, when he beat Mark Potter, some of his best boxing was when he got p on his toes and potshotted with the jab, which set Potter up for that uppercut that turned the fight on its head.

I truly believe that Danny this 'thriving on the big occasion' approach is the only way they were ever going to get him to perform to his potential.

I mean, he often looked so disinterested before some of his fights you would think he was there purely out of necessity, not because he wanted to be. As if he'd gone on a night out he could rather have done without.

Irrelevent of the state/deterioration of Iron Mike, boxing him is still an event as much as a fight, and in front of 15,000 he looked a different man altogether. Alert, focused and like Ian Darke said, he actuallly smiled down at him as he walked forwards for the ref's instructions.

I really hope he carries on that belief into the ring with him against Klitschko.
