Can someone explain again how this works. Lance Gostelow fighting for an African title?
Not trying to belittle any of the fighters in this event I am just a bit bemused

A lot of Australians have fought for African titles. I think Africans from Commonwealth countries can fight for Australasian titles too.

There is sometimes the case of two boxers fighting for a title that only one of them can win. I can't remember the names, but I've seen old boxers fight young boxers for youth titles before.

Anthony Mundine was WBA Pan African Super Middleweight champ for a while. I think it is a matter of numbers.

Ian Mckillop, a Canadian, beat Shannon Taylor for an Australasian title. Geography does not seem to matter.

Lance is fighting Onikeki who is of course African, if Lance wins he has to defend against an African, not rocket science once you know

one more thing , we tried to get lance to fight for the vacant NABO title as well but were refused bescause one has to be a North American to fight for the title So same as African you must fight someone from where the title originates, you cant have 2 Australians fighting except say the Oriental where sometimes they allow it as it is still in the same region but technically one of the opponents should be from asia pacific region

WBO has a rule & it does observe it, but with WBA anything goes.......Dollar is a Dollar.
At the same time, what exactly does Pan African mean??

"Pan African" means:

"All African", where the "pan" is derived from this meaning (one of many for "pan"):

pan-

a combining form meaning “all,” occurring originally in loanwords from Greek (panacea; panoply), but now used freely as a general formative (panleukopenia; panorama; pantelegraph; pantheism; pantonality), and esp. in terms, formed at will, implying the union of all branches of a group (Pan-Christian; Panhellenic; Pan-Slavism). The hyphen and the second capital tend with longer use to be lost, unless they are retained in order to set off clearly the component parts.

Remember the old airline named: Pan American, which meant "all american"!

Ah, but he won that by beating Mike Mollo, who was "Latin" by virtue of having spent part of his childhood in Argentina, when his parents worked there. (I'm not joking)

When WBA's regional body PABA kicked off, its sales pitch was PABA championship will get you WBA #10 rating.
After a while goal posts were moved. PABA champ had to beat Fedelatin's to get #10 spot, hence reason some Aussies challenged Fedelatin.

PABA had/has a great $$$ saving system. The new champ would get the belt after 2nd successful defence

Of course. Just explaining as others have above that you don't have to be from the region if the championship, so long as you challenge/defend against someone who is. Complete nonsense, though.

Regional champ vs regional champ for a world rating in itself is a very nice and logical idea - but having the belts actually on the line is not!
