Randall "Tex" Cobb
Randall "Tex" Cobb
Can anyone give me some information/stories about Cobb?
Yes. A clever man who wasn't as rubbish as he himself made out. Went the distance with a peak Larry Holmes.
"All I want to do is hit somebody in the mouth. It's a whole lot easier than working for a living. Don't make anything noble out of what I do."
"I'd love to fight Gerry Cooney but I have my price. "25c and a loose woman."
"I'll do anything to keep from working for a living. If I've gotta fight a circus bear then put the drawers on him and let's get it on."
and many more...

Cobb was a great character and one of the toughest heavies I've seen. He had great fights with Mike Dokes, Ken Norton, Earnie Shavers, Benardoe Mercadoe, and Leon Spinks (when both were past their best).... seemed to be impervious to punishment. His career becomes even more impressive when you take into account that he had no amuteur boxing career at all. He started off Kick Boxing and moved straight into the pro boxing ranks. A very witty and funny man his interviews were often hilarious and xrated. After the Holmes fight some bright spark asked Cobb if he'd like a rematch to which he replied ' I don't think Larrys hands could stand the abuse!'.
Sadly the most recent news I've found on Cobb suggests he's got involved in drugs and is in a bad way living in down and out hotels, hope its not true!......

Like many have said he was indeed one tough fighter with a very quick wit.
As others have mentioned his has appeared in many films and TV roles as an actor. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002012/
I'm also pretty sure as well as being a Kick-Boxer he also won a number of Toughman contests.
His fight against Leon Spinks is worth checking out, although both fighters are out of shape and past their best it's a real brawl.
I've heard some fans calling Cobb a bum which in my opinion is silly, yes he was limited skill wise at world level but he more than made up for any lack of finess with a great chin and determination, along with good stamina and power. Bums do NOT go the distance win a peak Holmes.
Cobb if around today would give the likes of Brewster, Byrd, Williams, McCline etc all the heat they could handle in my opinion.

quotes from Cobb
"all i want to do is to hit somebody in the mouth. Its a whole lot easier than working for a living. Don't make anything noble out of what I do"
"Anybody can hit as hard as Ernie Shavers. The thing that makes Earnie Shavers so significant is that Earnie Shavers is gonna hit you that hard every single time he lays leather on you. I had never been in a situation like Earnie before. And if I have anything to do with it, I'm damn sure not gonna get into it again"
"Hey your white. Why don't you do something about this?"
That was to the referee during the 13th round against Holmes

Had Cobb had the luxury of an amateur career, or had he been moved more carefully, he could have been a hell of a fighter, he had all the physical attributes, but had no technique to fall back on to back it up.Ian 'Mr' McNeilly wrote:Yes. Ace Ventura, Fletch Lives, Raising Arizona....Cobb is one of the funniest guys and one of the reasons we love boxing - so tough, a great chin. not great skills but an exceptional heart...still able to make a joke in the toughest of situation - IE even as he was taking a beating form Larry Holmes....Goz wrote:Also appeared in quite a few movies, had that ideal ugly pug face to play a bad guys 'heavy'.
Can't remember which ones though, do remember seeing him in Miami Vice during my teens.
