Boxing: Talented Tyrone a top tip for success Nov 1 2004

BOXING trainer Mick Wale watched young Huddersfield amateur Tyrone Nurse take another top scalp - then tipped him for future England honours.

The 14-year-old son of the town's professional trainer Chris Aston clinched a convincing win over current England fighter Joe Rogers, 15, at Parson's Cross in Sheffield.

The points success followed his win over Irish 54 kilos champion Patrick Kinhart while fighting for Yorkshire against County Mayo at Leeds Irish Centre.

Next on the agenda for the Newsome High School pupil is Saturday's North-Eastern round of the National Novices Championship in Hull's St Paul's club.

The tournament is for youngsters who have boxed 10 bouts or fewer at the time of entering.

And Wale, who operates from the Mexborough Amateur Boxing Club in South Yorkshire, believes Nurse has the ability to take gold.

Wale, whose own sons Gwyn, now a professional under Aston, and Josh have both won England amateur honours, said: "Tyrone definitely has the ability to go right the way to the top.

"I've seen a lot of kids come and go down the years.

"He is right up there with the best and beating Joe Rogers in his own backyard shows that."

The Rogers clash was Nurse's 11th in three years, 10 of which have been won, and Wale has followed a carefully plotted path.

"I took him to Southampton for his first fight, well away from the local spotlight, and he won well," recalls the experienced trainer.

"We've timed his bouts in order to reach the 10th just before the Novices, so he went into them with the maximum amount of experience.

"Then we'll go for the National Schoolboy Championships, which start after Christmas."

The prestigious Junior Amateur Boxing Association Championships are for 15 to 17-year-olds, so Nurse will take his bow in that tournament next season.

That will give him the chance to follow in the footsteps of Highburton's Commonwealth flyweight champion Dale Robinson, who won both junior and senior ABA titles and boxed for England before he turned professional with Aston back in the summer of 2000.

Next on the agenda for Aston, who is based at the Linthwaite Northern Fitness gym, is James Hare's bid to take the British welterweight title from Mancunian holder David Barnes.

That clash is at Halifax Leisure Centre on Friday, November 12.

The 28-year-old former WBF and Commonwealth champion from Berry Brow is deep into final preparations for the Sky clash.

Having sparred with the WBF intercontinental middleweight champion Andy Halder, from Coventry, Hare will now work out with a couple of lighter Southpaws.

Left-handed ex-soldier Barnes won the title in July, 2003.
