I'm sure the British version would be shot on digi cam and have loads of shots of a bald man in a track suit wandering about chewing gum with his mouth open, right?.....Haglers Barber wrote:The HBO 24/7 shows cost hundreds of thousands of pounds to produce. The quality of the programmes are high because naturally that is supposed to make people buy the PPV. They are made by skilled production staff hence the quality.
I am afraid no British version of that would come close to the quality they produce purely due to financial constraints. Having a couple of people with DV cameras following a boxer for whatever period of time will not necessarily make a good programme.
Maybe if Hatton were to face Khan or fights of that magnitude you could see whichever channel had the fight putting money towards making some programming around the fight to drive viewers towards it but until then I would say chances are slim....

Exactly!!!sg1985 wrote:I know nothing of production costs, or anything to do with that. But I don't see why they couldn't do a one hour programme build up, the week before or in the week leading up to it.
It seems there are some on this forum who would rather pick holes in my posts rather than discuss boxing and its issues.
I am stating there is no reason expecially financial why a programme or 2 cannot be made!!!

Re: Sky re-formatting the presenting
I don't make out I'm in the know. Answer me this then, why was the Ringside Magazine show dropped despite the fact SKY could then lay claim to several major attractions of their channels if it was SO easy, SO cheap and such an obvious format?Spud wrote:Payne,
Why do you feel the urgent need to hijack my posts to make yourself look clever with your patronising and insults - keep to the thread - see if you can discuss the issues without the insults.
As for costs etc etc you yet again make out you are in the know - when in reality you know nothing more than I do - well thats incorrect too because I have it on very good authority Sky could do this 24/7 if they wanted to and at very little cost to themselves.
Lets just presume I am wrong Payne - I cannot get my head around why you have chosen to open up an old long running feud between us with your insults.
I know SKY could do it. They could do owt they fancied but satellite television by definition creates a, Hatton aside, spiral into obscurity.
Had Jamie Moore and Ryand Rhodes been regulars on terrestrial television in the golden age of 4 channel telly they'd be household names and this fight would be a bigger domsetic event in the manner Benn, Eubank et al were.
But they haven't, they've existed, largely, in the multi-channel digital era when casual viewers have greater choice and are not, by quasi-default, found watching boxing on a Saturday night.
So outside of boxing circles nobody knows who Jamie is, particularly outside his geographical roots, similarly if less so Ryan has little weight of renown with casual fans despite potentially a hazy recollection of his association with Hamed.
To my mind, 24/7 type programming is designed to capture peripheral, casual, dormant interest in a fight but I don't think SKY believe that to be a realistic objective for anything involving fighters who haven't ALREADY done the hard work of creating a following (Hatton) or broken into the mainstream conscience in the way (Khan and Harrison) did through the Olympics.
These are big events in our insular world, they're are equivalent to Sheffield Wednesday v Blackburn Rovers in the perspective of SKY Sports football dominated world - would you expect 30 minute trailers for three weeks before they met?
Would you bollacks, and thats in a sport where the respective standing of SWFC and BRFC is vastily more transparent, the protaganists have bigger followings, greater history and everyone understands their relative position in the hierarchy of their sport.
You can dismiss me as negative etc, but I'm just trying to explore the delusion that every fight WE get excited about merits such coverage.
I'm sure there are tremendous match-ups in Table-Tennis, Darts, Snooker etc that forums and message boards hum about and I'm sure they bleet endlessly about how Ronnie O'Sullivan should win Sports Personality of the year and how his forthcoming clash with Marco Fu is a real barn-burner and should get some 24/7 type coverage.
You have to take the wider view. SKY is about football, everything else is a VERY distant 2nd. And I'd say boxing is about 9th or 10th for SKY.
Re: Sky re-formatting the presenting
I'd love to see something, but I fear the main reason is if it were a one hour build up no bugger would watch it. Dont get me wrong, we would, but your average jo would skip sky sports 1 and go to sky sports news, or a re-run of only fools and horses. Boxing just isnt big enough to drum up major interest ina fight involving fighters 99.9% of people have never heard of (no offence to either of the lads concerned).Spud wrote:

Its the same, when do Sky ever show re-runs of fights? They could show Moore Macklin or Moore Jones 3 at some random time on a random day, but they never do, yet WWE and Footy is on virtually all the time. WWE Vintage, but not vintage boxing.

Re: Sky re-formatting the presenting
Costs and viewing figures are the whole reason these shows cant be made.
To make a good 24/7 that doesnt bore the pants off people then you need good production to get the footage which in any normal rpogramme means good camera crews, director and production staff then add on all the editing costs and even the cheapest of the cheapest for a 1 hr show I reckon would be in around 10k (and thats a stripped down no frills, self shot etc). Ideally a budget of 100k would be deemed reasonable

Re: Sky re-formatting the presenting
It's actually quite funny how Rhodes/Moore has suddenly become some huge domestic super-fight in need of a Countdown/24/7 treatment.
Is that a sign of how desperate we've come for any kind of exciting domestic boxing of late?
Let's be real for a moment - Rhodes/Moore is a just a decent Friday Fight Night main event. Neither have won at anything close to world-class. It's the sort of fight we SHOULD be more accustomed to seeing on a Friday night. It's a great fight for us hardcore, but outside that...

Never a response when the post is ENTIRELY on topic is there?
And well done Spud for removing the thinly veiled "or perhaps if we meet up it will all get sorted" line from which ever post it featured in.

Payne - when you unequivocally apologise for your pathetic rant towards me in your initial post I will respond as I will always enjoy doing in healthy boxing debate in the future.DavidPayne wrote:Never a response when the post is ENTIRELY on topic is there?

But I am completely sick to death of people such of yourself painting a picture of being the sweet and innocent one and yet you continually hijack my posts with only one intention.
If you do read your initial post again whether you put it as a joke or not you will see why I am objecting so much and why I think your first 2 lines were sick and vile.

This bit you mean?Spud you live in a fantasy world where boxing is a religion.

I shouldn't have suggested you were a carbonated terrorist as way of conveying your zest and efervesance for boxing, your self-appointed role as the sport's ambassadorial evangalist, and your firmly held conviction that boxing should be on telly instead of Strictly Come Dancing every Friday night.Spud wrote:Payne - must apologise it included the 3rd line too and in the present climate - it seems you think it is okay to joke in the way you do.

Re: Sky re-formatting the presenting
I just want to say I have just received a fit and proper response to the 24/7 idea from someone within Sky.
It was a full explanation as to why it would be deemed not a very good idea - I have no problems in accepting that.
The response was not merely a one liner dismissing me out of hand and it did not contain one single line of insult of saracasim.
Thank you

I offered you at least two attempts to explain why it is a non-starter, you were too busy having a hissy fit to respond, though granted an answer from SKY TV is a little more definitive.Spud wrote:I just want to say I have just received a fit and proper response to the 24/7 idea from someone within Sky TV.

Re: Sky re-formatting the presenting
A 10 minute preview is enough for me, no need to go overboard.
Re: Sky re-formatting the presenting
Something on Sky Sports news would be good, something before the thursday before the fight!! Like a "heres jamie training for his fight" say tomorrow, then the same with ryan on wednesday. 5 mins each played every hour for the course of the day (like all their stories are).
Re: Sky re-formatting the presenting
id like to get the full press conference that occurs in the week of the fight. and also the full interviews after the press conference / weight in , instead of the 20 or 30 second bits we get in the 2 minute report just before the fight.
