Marciano-Quarry...

Post by yancey »

Intriguing matchup, to my thinking.

What happens?

What would be Jerry's best fight plan?

Just because the probable outcome of a matchup is known, the intriguing possibilities and what-ifs still exist.

Would loved to have seen Quarry try out Marciano and seen what he tried to do.

Outside signing for a 3 round fight Jerrys best plan would be to go straight at him, like he did in his first fight with Frazier, and hope to open up a bad cut for a tko. If not he'd loose in the same fashion as he did against Frazier.

I see Quarry coming on strong early, but around the 5th and 6th
he is in trouble. Marciano by stoppage maybe in the 7th or 8th.
Quarry would have plenty of moments and look good. But his
stamina would be the deciding factor against the hard as nails and
better conditioned Rock.

I think while it lasted it would be a good fight.

Marciano beats him easier than Frazier did in the first fight.

Imagine the sound of Marciano's right glove slamming into Quarry's jaw. Like a baseball bal striking a telephone book, probably a very dull sound.

Lights out.

A mess, sure, "lights out", nah.

Jerry was too damn tough and Marciano ain't the "lights out" guy he is built up to be.

Watch the Cockell fight, if you have the stomach for it.

Equally, Ali's shots put Quarry on absolute queer street in their rematch.

Quarry could be hurt more readily than people think. It ain't as though Walcott was Marciano's only single-shot (or near-single shot) KO victim. The way he put Matthews away was similarly swift --- though, of course, I imagine the KO punch in this instance as coming long after Quarry has lost control of the bout, & has already absorbed quite a bit of punishment.

Sounds about right to me, except I think it goes a little longer.

Agreed. Quarry was an excellent counter puncher and would have the edge in hand speed over Rocky, which he did not have against Frazier or Ali. Rocky by stoppage around 10.

Im not sold on Marciano. I think he was tough, aggressive, and in great shape but for me there are a lot of question marks about him. The guys Quarry was fighting were a step above Marciano IMO. Interestingly Marciano was all set to buy Quarry's contract until he lost to Eddie Machen. Marciano walked out of the arena in disgust.

I think Jerry would have had a chance at pulling out a 10 round decision. I'd still say Rocky probably wins 4 out of 5, even over 10 rounds.

I'd take Quarry in a 10 rounder vs Marciano. His resume is much better than Marciano's.

Me too. A decision win is for Quarry is the only likely outcome, although Quarry might win on a TKO too.

After all, the Rock would have been in his mid-40s and suffering from a 10-year plus layoff if he had ever fought Quarry. That would have been too much for even a great fighter like Rocky to overcome, especially against a top-notcher like Quarry.

But I am curious, Seamus, as to how Quarry's resume is superior to Rocky's? Rocky went 49-0 (43 KOs), won the title, and successfully defended it six times. Quarry went 39-9-4 (32 KOs) and lost his only title fight.

Well for starters, Quarry arguably beat Floyd Patterson twice, fought a prime Joe Frazier almost to a standstill for 7rds before being stopped on cuts. Beat a bigger and stronger Ron Lyle in a very clear decision. Stopped lethal Earnie Shavers in the 1st. Ko'd Mac Foster (24-0 all by ko against some good opposition) in the 6th. Beat Buster Mathis by a wide decision. Ko'd Thad Spencer in the 12th, and KO'd Commonwealth and European Champion Jack Bodell in the 1st.

I think that's enough there for making case for Quarry in a 10 rounder.

Notice you also have the Rock knocking out Norton and Patterson in 1.

Would you give your thoughts on Rocky vs....

Ali?
Foreman?
Liston?

Or . . .

Quarry arguably lost twice to Floyd Patterson, was defeated and then embarrassed by Ali, mauled by Joe Frazier (twice) and Kenny Norton, kayoed by George Chuvalo, upset by Jimmy Ellis, and schooled by veteran Eddie Machen. His biggest wins came against inexperienced fellows Ron Lyle and Mac Foster.

I guess you can look at it both ways but I genuinely think Quarry was a guy who had horrible luck and whose losses dont tell the whole story. On the flip side I genuinely KNOW Marciano was protected by the Al Weill, the Madison Square Garden club and the IBC. I also think Patterson, Ali, and Frazier were all better fighters than Marciano. I think his loss to Norton was when he was pretty well shot and his loss to Ellis came in a fight where he went in with a broken back and still only lost a split decision. His KO loss to Chuvalo was the very definition of a fluke and a strange stoppage to boot. In 99 out of 100 fights Id pick Quarry to beat Chuvalo easily (as he was on his way to doing) it just so happened that the one fight they actually fought was that one out of 100 and remains arguably the best win on Chuvalo's record.
