Manny Pacquiao will beat Floyd Mayweather on speed says Amir Khan

By Gareth A Davies Boxing and MMA Last updated: September 28th, 2009

Amir Khan returns to Los Angeles in October where he has been training under Freddie Roach, sparring with Manny Pacquiao, and improving his all-round game. Revealing on Monday that there are definite talks ongoing for him to defend the WBA 140lb gong against Dmitry Salita in December, sometime, somewhere…Khan also spoke out in favour of his gym mate Pacquiao.

The prospect of Pacquiao facing Floyd Mayweather Jr, who returned to the ring after a 21-month absence last week to score a unanimous points victory over Juan Manuel Marquez, is the talk of boxing. Many believe it will happen but Pacquiao must first go through Miguel Cotto. Arguably, it is the toughest fight of Pacquiao’s career. Cotto is a dangerous fighter who bides his time in championship fights, and sets traps like an old fox. Pacquiao will have to have his head on…for 36 minutes.

Khan admits he was impressed by Mayweather’s comeback, but believes Pacquiao would emerge the victor if they were to meet (he would also like to fight both of them himself down the line).

Khan said: “[Mayweather's comeback] was brilliant, Floyd is a great fighter. Coming back and having the pressure of not being in the ring for a year and a half - I think he looked better than before he retired. Boxing is exciting, with these champions coming forward and back in the ring. It’s an addiction that boxing gives you.”

“Floyd Mayweather called it a day and never wanted to look at boxing again, and a year and a half later he’s back in the ring again and is still classed as one of the very best in the world. I train alongside Manny Pacquiao who is also classed as one of the best in the world - what a fight that would be. It’s all brewing up for one big fight.

“But I’m the same weight as well and one day in the future maybe there could be a fight down the line for me. At the moment we’re taking our time and Salita is hopefully the next man for me. But from there the tougher fights and the bigger names will start coming. In a year’s time I think I’ll be in the same mix as them with the likes of Marquez, Mayweather and Manny.”

Khan believes Pacquiao’s speed would be the decisive factor in any contest with Mayweather. “I’ve trained with both of them, and I have to back my guy - my guy is Manny Pacquiao and I think Manny might take the fight with his speed.”

“A lot of people forget that speed is power. You can’t take it away from Mayweather, who is a fast fighter. But when you take speed, with amount of punches you throw - Manny throws a lot of punches with speed, whereas Mayweather is more a single-shot fighter. He’s still quick, but I don’t think single shots will keep Manny Pacquiao away from Mayweather, whereas I know combinations will push Mayweather back.

“I would say the fight looks 60% towards Manny’s favour, and he’s been more active, in the ring more. Mayweather’s performance coming back from retirement looked great though, and that was one fight - maybe in the second fight he might look even better.”

Agree ? Disagree ? It is simply Khan’s loyalty to Roach and Pacquiao ?
Guys, can we get Khan on here? If so, I'll have a wager with him. He can back Manny, I'll back Floyd, all day long!

If we do end up with Pacquiao-Mayweather, it won't be about speed as much as people think! This game is all about hitting & not getting hit, something Mayweather does better than Pacquiao!

Floyd will beat Pacquiao. People can harp on all they want about JMM being so much smaller, but no one has ever defeated him in the manner Floyd did! JMM couldn't hardly anything, if anything at all. Granted, its some years apart, but JMM gave Pacquiao all he could handle.

I'm a fan of both Floyd & Manny but I can't see anyone from 154lbs downwards beating Floyd! He hadn't fought for twenty-one months, yet after the showing against Marquez, he could have us believe he fought last month!

Agree with you Mr Balboa, Khan's backing his training partner as he should. If he thinks its 'all about speed' though, he's wrong, its about boxing skill and defense, disguising intentions, plus reach/height, and Mayweather has him on those fronts.

If this fight gets made, my final pick would be based alot on the Pacquiao vs Cotto match. So far, Pacquiao walked through the best shots of David Diaz, but it definately wasn't the best shots of Oscar and Ricky... well didn't really get going at all. Although, the more I see that fight the more convinced I am Ricky hurt Pacquiao in the second.

Pacquiao for me has the speed, power and work rate advantages over Floyd - which could be a factor - Marquez just didn't work (he was really baffled by Floyd's accuracy and power).... he aint got the defence, and will have to eat alot of punches. If he can take these, then he has a good chance.

Really, unlike Marquez, Pacquiao is more used to getting frustrated, getting outboxed - sticking at it when the game plan doesn't seem to be working. Getting comprehensively outboxed has never really happend to Marquez before and the frustration came through early.

I think this is the case. Manny did that raising his arms in the air thing he does when he's buzzed. Ricky couldn't capatalise. I think Cotto could very well KO Manny. But you're right Stu, its best not to make a judgement re; Mayweather Pacquiao until after the Cotto fight.

Boxer with self confidence shocker

Nobody should be looking beyond the Cotto fight for Manny at the moment, I really still can't pick a winner in that one

:TU: Not an easy fight for Floyd by ant means, remember him being buzzed twice by southpaw Demarcus Corley? The second time he was buzzed pretty badly...but as you say he's probably got too much in the locker for Pacquiao or any fighter south of 147lbs.

Although dominated Marquez did smack Floyd pretty cleanly in the chops a few times, Manny might make more of it....

Although Floyd is favourite for sure in Goz's book.

Aye, it is a shocker, I wonder if The Sun will run a front page on it.
The bit about burning in hell? I mean, come on, Sun readers already know Khan's going to hell for being a Muslim.

This statement is about as surprising as 'Man thinks his wifes lancashire hot pot is tastier than his next door neighbours.'

At 147, Floyd wins. At a catchweight - which Floyd would have to make this time - Pac wins.

I think Floyd beat's Pacquiao at WW and a catchweight he would be able to emulate his speed like he did against Zab Judah then come back with his own fast punches and catch Pac coming in I see a UD or late stoppage for Mayweather
