LOWEST PURSES FOR DEFENDING OR CHALLENGING FOR WORLD TITLES
LOWEST PURSES FOR DEFENDING OR CHALLENGING FOR WORLD TITLES
After reading the pittance in todays day and age that Poonaswat got when he beat Dunne,i wondered just what were the lowest purses given to champions and challengers, with so many boxers ending their careers with little to show for their efforts,do promoters/managers get to much for sitting on their backsides??

How much did he get?
Re: LOWEST PURSES FOR DEFENDING OR CHALLENGING FOR WORLD TITLES
$120,000 for the spinks judah unification fight was quite small. Although Ive no doubt there are ones a lot smaller.

- JMMarquez turned down 3/4 mil for the immediate Manny rematch to go get his title lifted in Indonesia for 30 grand. Could be the team was lured by the free daily pitchers of fresh frothy pssss. Go figure since they obviously couldn't.BARNEYKX wrote:After reading the pittance in todays day and age that Poonaswat got when he beat Dunne,i wondered just what were the lowest purses given to champions and challengers, with so many boxers ending their careers with little to show for their efforts,do promoters/managers get to much for sitting on their backsides??
Mr. Moneybags turned down 20 mil for the Oscar rematch to comeback and fight JMMarquez for 10 mil. Of course MM is a billionaire after all, so it ain't about the money, it's about R-E-S-P-E-C-T and seeking out the best and biggest challenges........ 8)

McCllellan was well short changed and walked away with barely over £30,000 for the Nigel Benn fight.
And of course to make it even worse - no amount of money was worth the cost he suffered from that fight.

People are very unrealistic if they think you get 100's of thousands for title fights, loads do it for 10k

McCrory got about 18k for the Jeff Lampkin fight, and even that took some getting as his promoter was caught at the airport trying to do a bunk with the cash after the fight.

Tim Witherspoon as a reigning heavyweight champ was badly shafted by prmoter Don King, and "manager" carl King. He got next to nothing coming over here to beat Bruno, who was very well paid.
After the fight, Don handed him a bill invoicing him for everything under the sun: hotels, flights, sparring partners, phone calls, food and even the running of his "fan club" - which he didn't even know he had, by Don's wife...I think he almost ended up owing Don money as a result.
He knew what to expect by the time he next defended, and keeled over inside a round to Bonecrusher Smith - one of the most unlikely results you'll ever see.

I seem to remember a figure of about 60 grand being quoted as the purse The Spoon cleared for the Bruno fight. Based on an original purse of over 1m, Don shafted the champ good and properMightyWarrior wrote:Tim Witherspoon as a reigning heavyweight champ was badly shafted by prmoter Don King, and "manager" carl King. Considering what he Gerald sacrificed, the brutal nature of the fight & the outcome, £30,000 is fcuking scandalous! Someone must be accountable for such a low figure!FLINT ISLAND wrote:McCllellan was well short changed and walked away with barely over £30,000 for the Nigel Benn fight.

There's no getting away from this. Boxing does stink. For all it's characters, and good points, it is essentially not a good business to be in as a fighter, professionally, I would say.BARNEYKX wrote:Poonsawat got £12,000 plus £4,000 bonus, fight was on sky and rte plus 9000 plus gateforcefraser wrote:How much did he get?
As for all the "Promoting" that goes on...there is certainly no rocket science going on. If you follow the sport, you know the fighters, you hire a venue, arrange security (usually abysmally)....grab some journo's, put some posters up, sound of in front of a camera........then take a good wedge of what the men in the GYM are getting paid. I would say that is more easy than difficult.
I'm not saying some of the smaller scale shows always make a profit, but that's part of the game, Boxing is a hobby as well as an income for these people, but certainly with the better fighters, on the bigger shows, I would say the promoters get more money than they are actually worth......that's why they're always getting dropped by the big fighters.

Tommy Gibbons went 15 rounds with Jack Dempsey for nothing in Shelby, Montana, in 1923. Jack Kearns negotiated a straight fee of $300,000 for Dempsey. Gibbons' manager agreed on 50 per cent of the receipts between $300,000 and $600,000, and 25 per cent of anything over that.
The local business syndicate paid Kearns $100,000 in cash straightaway, the second $100,000 was OK, but then they couldn't raise any more. At one point they made a serious offer to Kearns of 50,000 sheep instead of the last $100,000. (After the fight Dempsey left without bothering to change, and fled with his cornermen and almost all of the ringside writers.) Kearns stood at the gate and bagged the remainder of the cash, then got out of town after bribing a local stationmaster to put on an unscheduled one-carriage train. Kearns' only companion on the train was a stray writer who was wandering the station platform drunk in charge of a ukelele.)

It's hardly Peters fault - he looked after his fighter - I reckon Dunne got anyway between e200,000 and e300,000 for his efforts.lowersmiths wrote:NorthEastBoxingFan wrote:There's no getting away from this. Poonsawat only has himself and Team Poonsawat to blame for his shiit payday.
Team Poonsawat didnt get their act together sufficiently to submit a purse bid and they got fuucked over and Poonsawat obviously is also being fuucked over by Team Poonsawat because they got e90,000 for the fight - excluding whatever sponsorship they managed to get.
