No Guzman title fight

Its seems like Guzman will no longer be fighting on the Tszyu vs Mitchell bill a last minute contract dispute has meant that his fight with Marcos Licona is off.

Its must have been quite confusing because Licona thought he was fighting for the title, but when Guzman came in at 128.5 (122 weight limit) then it was announced the no contract had been signed.

Joe Morales (19-8, K KO's) has stepped in to face Guzman in the 10 round affair, this should be a blow out victory for Guzman. I wonder is Sky will show Yori Boy Campus' tune up also. They have 1 hr 30 to play with and I can't see Guzman's fight last more than 6.

Licona is fuming, its one of those press conferences that I would have love to have seen.

wasnt morales robbed vs rocky juarez in his last fight...?

I like guzman, liked him since he fought on the calzaghe bill in cardiff, warren was his promoter then, what happened? did joan <tsk> see the light?

One thing is for certain, he is not going to be a Super Bantam for a lot longer judging the photo of him at 128. He looks "right" there.

I agree with you Wales, I was mightly impressed with him on that bill aswell and to do a number on Sanchez shows his quality (Pacquiao couldn't do it).

Those bastards on Sky will probably give the undercard result away. After the Tszyu fight before they go to a break they will show a clip of the fight. and say something about it. I'd be pissed alright if instead of this fight they showed a repeat of the Dazzo Williams or Cook fights.

Morales knocked Juarez down, but Rocky came back to win the fight.

If Morales is in shape, I don't see how this is a blowout victory for Guzman. Morales is a tough guy who gave Juarez and Zahir Raheem hard fights and also pulled off an upset over Antonio Cermeno a year and a half ago. He has only one "KO" loss and that was a fight stopped on cuts against Joel Cassamayor.

Bottom line -- it's a fight at 130 (rather than 122 where Guzman is champ) and Morales is a tougher guy than Licona

Sorry, I must have misread it - I thought Morales came in at 122 and was giving away 6 lbs.

My mistake, completely agree. Should be a interesting fight, but I still can only see one winner.

jesus christ, how the hell did morales stay up after that thunder he took in round 3. i swear guzman connected 3 times with dempsey/willard style shots and morales was still there... awesome. I doubt many others of even super featherweight could have taken all those shots.

i disagree with ian darke, i thought guzman looked fantastic in there. So dangerous, so powerful, quick and relentless. I just hope he fights marquez or pacquaio because those fights are what the game should be about.

I to disagree with Darke, my only concern is his stamina. Was he just ill prepared for this fight, or is there a stamina problem? Remember most of his opponents are out of there early, I wouldn't say Guzman was fecked but definately slowed up by the half way stage.

I think he will be knocking alot of people out at Feather/Super Feather, but those he cannot KO may stand a chance.

Great effort by Morales by the way.

it was a learning fight for guzman, and he learned well. He didn't fold when he realized he wouldn't stop morales. He slowed down, but he went out ferocious. Whether he can take the hellish shots of pacquaio is the $64,000 question.

I think the big question is whether Pacquiao can take the hellish shots of Guzman. Remember Pacman has been down and hurt on a number of occasions in the past, Nedal Hussain for example had Pac down and hurt with a single jab. Guzman has obvious class and even more obvious power, no superbantam in the world could have stayed awake from the shots he put on Morales. Guzman had a bit over 7 days notice and wasn't in shape, Darke was full of shit, he should leave the opinions to Watt and concentrate on the commenatary. Their where no contracts for a WBO title fight, as has been stated many times and could have been found out with a little research. As far as Guzman knew he was fighting a non title 10 rounder at 128.

He needed the 10 rounds, they have to start getting this guy fighting regularly. He's an entertaining fighter, any bill will benefit from him being on it. Finding opponents will be the trouble.

Guzmans amateur record is quite impressive too, for me this shows the guy has real boxing ability, off the top of my head its something like 310 fights, 280-290 wins.

I agree. I thought Guzman looked good. I have actually seen him spar at Gleasons Gym in New York and he looked good. He sparred with Repton bantamweight Andrew Wallace, and Wallace didn't do too badly. He looked OK, and against Guzman, that was pretty good.
