John Murray

Post by Autobarn »

Props to John Murray. Fought an excellent fight, solved Thaxton's unorthodox style early and seemed to shake him several times with well picked left hooks and right hands.

Murray looked lean, strong and polished & Thaxton seemed to be no problem whatsoever for him. First time I've seen Murray vs a puncher, and 1st time vs a southpaw I believe.

So, he's beaten Meager (slugger), McAllister (slickster), Lawton (lanky boxer with good guard) and Thaxton (powerful Ingle style). All inside the distance. All decisively. These might not all have been in their prime, but we seldom see "prime vs prime" fights, and boxing is about timing and more importantly, PROGRESS. Murray has progressed and looks good enough to move up in class.

Don't want to dwell on Foster's refereeing - other than the fact that it was brought on by one hell of a sharp, straight right hand from Murray.

Murray was quality, he's finally got Thaxton out of the way when he was allowed the fight - so what next? Should he make one more defense, winning the Lonsdale belt outright? Or move on up, - and fast?

Auto - anything less than a Katsidis type opponent or a European title shot will be bad promoting.

Murray is way better than I thought he was - I think he could win a world title no problem.

If he fights at British level again it will be a crying shame.

Which British lightweights are there left to fight???

Has he not beaten them all now??

That was his best performance imo he was very patient and looked strong and powerful he dealt with Thaxton's style very well. I would love to see him in with either
Katsidis- It may be too early it would be a magic fight though
Meezache- A very winnable fight for him I would see him stopping him early but it's for the Euro belt
Juan Diaz- He hasnt been as good after his loss to Campbell but he is still strong and exciting this would be a cracker as well

I hope he gets Mezaache. It would seem bad if McAllister got the shot ahead of Murray. But this kind of thing can happen if you don't move your fighter up when there is a chance.

Katsidis would be interesting. Does he hold a world title belt now? He looked alright - very strong - in his last 2 bouts.

As I've said before, what Khan is to mobile, slick boxing, Murray is to pressure fighting.

Would love to see Murray v Romanov. Both men seemed to almost toy with Thaxton - in similar ways. For a while I have given Murray a good shot at beating Romanov. Sadly there doesn't seem to be a great gain in it, because Romanov didn't get his world title shot. Katsidis and Romanov - that would be something!...Murray too good for British level, let's see that leap in class.

Don't think Murray wll get a real bruisning life and death type of fight unless he fights someone like Romanov or Katsidis.

Yes, let's hope he gets that Euro shot next. He was superb last night, but somewhat robbed of his moment of glory by the premature stoppage. Plenty more glory nights to come, though, I feel. Murray is becoming a complete fighter.

I think Katsidis holds an interim belt, which will become the full title if Marquez does not return to 135 to defend it. Murray-Katsidis late 2010 would be awesome.

doesn't he have to get ranked first?

I'm not sure what he has to do to get a WBO ranking - which is the interim title held by Katsidis. The Euro title would, I think, give him an automatic ranking with the WBC - whose 135 title is currently held by Edwin Valero. How about that for a fight? Very risky, but it would be great to be the first to derail the Valero express.

every now and again there are rumours of humberto soto v valero. i'd wait them out for a while - they're very dangerous and each has campaigned several world title bouts.

if the euro shot can't be made next, defence v. limond or arthur would be decent

At last!!!

Murray in my view is showing his true potential, although I expected to beat Thaxton fairly comfortably it was nonetheless an excellent performance and proved he is certainly european class - as some have already eluded - its now up to Meaty Mick to promote him well so Murray can prove either way he has what it takes on the world stage. Murray is now one of Hennessy's top fighters - in my view he is only behind Froch in the pecking order and needs to be given the due respect. Meaty Mick now needs to get his finger out.

Was at the fight last night and would just have to defend the ref, Thaxton looked seriously shaken with every shot that landed clean. At ringside we were saying his corner should give him one one more round then pull him out. I think Foster realized that Jonno has had a long career, been in some wars and was never going to win. Why let him take punishment? Good call for me. Murray was excellent, very patient and his timing was very good against someone as unorthodox as Thaxton is. This has been a good year for him.

i agree there was only going to be one outcome after the fourth, thaxton wasnt going to get himself back into the fight. i think murray should go out and beat mezzache, proved hes good enough to move on. really came of age

Romanov would be a good fight. Nice bridge between British class and the elite.

As an outsider, maybe Meaty Mick could bring Breidis Prescott over?

romanov would be good but think prescott would be pointless as hes already been beat if he was still unbeaten it would of been marketable ie than man who kod khan but it would be high risk low reward for murray

He's looking very good now isn't he, very solid, and a potential big ticket seller over here too. Mick and co have done a great job bringing him along, they've got to have really high hopes now.
Have to be careful matching him now, keep him busy with a couple of borderline fading top tenners into early 2010.
Keep clear of the dangerous punchers, no need to risk that until the money and risk levels are right.

Too early for Kastidis, he's the type of top level never say die puncher than can ruin a prospect. That last guy the Aussie beat was an excellent prospect too, and he took a hell of a beating for his troubles.

But if they get the call from FW, and the elusive Khan fight materialises later this year, then they'll rightly grab it with both hands.

Good fights for the future. Soto is a classy operator. Is he now campaigning at 135?

he showed potential in the dean hickman fight, for the english title, in about 2007. in fact he's delivered vs meager, mcallister, and lawton. i'd say the wins over meager and thaxton were almost flawless performances.

with thaxton out of the way, i'm sure mick h will give murray the shove in the right direction. IMO been a long time coming. henn took thaxton as far as he could go in a very worthy career; now let's see murray get to where he's going.

think he's moving up if he gets the shot at valero. soto seems to be trading water at 130 with his title. won't get the big payday unless he lands an intriguing fight.

i like soto a lot. i think there was also a rumour he might face the guy who beat antillon?

I just checked and Soto is challenging Acosta (the guy who beat Antillon) for the WBA 135 title on December 19th. The lightweight division is very strong right now and it will be good to see Murray emulate his stablemate Froch and take on the best.

i'd let them better each other a bit first, let them narrow it down, use FW's "wait and see" strategy - though not for too long!

That strategy will be employed, but not by choice. Hennessy takes forever to get his fighters into a world title position. I don't expect Murray to get a sniff at a world title for a least another two years and probably longer.

1. Anthony Mezaache - The most obvious next fight for Murray: He will get the European title, get more experience and improve his World rankings.

2. Gavin Rees or Willie Limond - He would win the Lonsdale belt outright (I think) and get another good win.

interesting choice. re #2 - i'd go for rees - ex world title holder, & apparently moved back down to lightweight? actual world level implications, despite it being a domestic clash.
