Worst injurys suffered by Boxers In Fights

Post by FLINT ISLAND »

To call Boxing a brutal sport - is a bit of a understatement.

But what have been the worse injurys a boxer has suffered from a bout.

I dont mean the obvious tragic ones - like the death of Johnny Owen or James Murray the near death of Michael Watson and Gerald McCllellan and Spencer Oliver.

I'm talking about fighters who have gone into a fight - and suffered a really bad injury - and still come out of the fight - but in a bit of a bad way.

I'll start off with a kind of example of what I mean.

Gernardo Hernadez - when he fought Oscar De La Hoya - Oscar hit him with a left hook that bust his nose in 64 places !!!!! :o

Is it only me finding this thread a bit distasteful? Sure, injuries are part and parcel of the sport, but we shouldn't be 'celebrating' the worst examples. All a bit too voyeuristic and inappropriate for me chaps...

Fair point

I would not say this thread is to "celebrate" the harm of another human being

But boxing is the hurt business

I'm just trying to remeber the most damage that has been dished out

Its a sobering reminder of how serious a business boxing is

Then there was Barrios' Chelsea smile mouth tear against Juarez, Corrales' sharp edged mouthpiece poking through his face and of course the limply hanging dislocated arms of Danny Williams and Colin McMillan.

Oh and Malignaggi's broken cheekbone against Cotto, Arthur Abraham's stuck-open broken jaw against Miranda (Richard Evatt had the same thing against Junior Jones). I probably shouldn't be able to remember all these as easliy i am. Feeling a little queasy now.

Dean Francis' shoulder injury which forced him to pull out in the second round of his fight with Undra White. That injury cost him several years' activity and, consequently, his almost certain ascent to world class.

Vitali Klitschko's torn rotator cuff which forced him to retire late in his fight with Chris Byrd (a fight he was winning handily) and resulted - rather unfairly - in his being labelled a "quitter" (or Vitali "Quitschko"). His subsequent heroic effort against Lennox with another appalling injury - this time to his eye - should have dispelled all doubts regarding his intestinal fortitude.

Muhammad Ali's battling on with a badly broken jaw in his first fight with Ken Norton still beggars belief. There is still some debate as to when the fracture occured, but it is generally believed to have been in the second round.

Eubanks eye against Thompson was a bad one.

Also, when shoulders go is not good (Dean Francis, Danny Williams).
