Froch offered £5m for Hopkins?

Post by Rocky Balboa »

This is taken from an article by Kevin Mitchell in the Guardian
"This is hardly the fighter's fault. He gets in the ring and does the business. It is up to those around him to get him the best deal. Bernard Hopkins supposedly offered Froch £5m for a fight earlier this year – yet he is tied to a contract with Showtime worth a fraction of that to fight three times, possibly four, against the best 12-stone fighters in the game."

This cannot be right. £5mil is about $7.5mil. Considering HBO were only offering $3mil for the Hopkins vs Adameck fight, where would the rest of the cash come from?

Kevin Mitchell is known for getting things mixed up or bending the truth, he claimed last week that Mayweather weighd 20lbs more that Marquez when they were in the ring LOL
I thought negotiations didn't even get going because B-Hop wanted £5M, not Froch being offered that amount!

Thoughts?

My thoughts are

Where is all this talk about Carl Froch generating £5 million fights come from

Rember how there was supposed to be £5 million on the table for Calzaghe to fight Froch

How can Froch generate such money

Its bull

He fought Jermain Taylor for less than $1 million.

I honestly think that if there really was £5 million on the table for Calzaghe to fight Froch he would have had that one last fight after Roy Jones to seal his pension

£5 million for a fight on British shores - he would have taken it

But instead he would have probaly got more like £1 million for fighting Froch - so he left it

It sounds very suspect to me as Hopkins was supposedly demanding a large majority of the purse when he was negotiating with Adamek (which is why the fight never happened)

Maybe Hopkins put the deal on the table after he knew Froch was tied to Showtime

Lose-lose situation for Froch if he took the fight.

If he won then he's beaten an old man, if he loses he's exposed, stick to the fighters of now like Kessler, Abraham and Bute rather than an old spoiler.

I can think of £5m reasons to dispute that, but yes in boxing terms you're correct

hopkins would have beat him.

but 5m is worth it all the way. :OhYes:

instead of that he joins the super six and gets a murderers row of a draw.

for about 4 times less than that.

If he beats Hopkins he beat up a washed up old man, when he emphatically wins the Super 6 he'll be a Legend

I'm a big Froch fan but the idea of him being offered £5m to fight anyone at the moment is ridiculous. The only boxers who can command that sort of purse are the Klitschko's, Floyd Mayweather, Ricky Hatton, Pacman and de la Hoya.

No truth in it (an offer)

I think some 'sounding out' went off with regards a catchweight bout.

But that happens all the time with every fighter.

Its bollox, ie not true, LOL at the Froch supporters making excuses about Hopkins being a lose-lose STFU, fighting Dirrell who's beat no one isnt lose-lose and fighting ATG Hopkins who'd bring a big payday isn't lose-lose. Hopkins did want the fight though because he saw it as easy pickings and he probably made some kind of offer. But if Froch was offered £5m he would take it and buy out the Showtime contract, didnt happen though

Froch isnt a big draw yet if he wins the super 6 then he will be a big name but at the moment it would take a lot of money for B-Hop to demolish him. If they fought I see Hopkins giving him a boxing lesson and winning on points

super 6 is the best way for froch to make his name, against some of the best names and brightest prospects from the middle and super middle divisions. it has great style matchups between ppl that want to fight. let the ppl that want to fight, fight, i say.

look what happened when one of britain's best ever, ken buchanan, fought carlos ortiz. ortiz dismissed buchanan as being a poor champ beforehand, ran for his life and spoiled during the fight, then quit to add insult to injury. while it was a notch on buchanan's belt, buchanan wasn't allowed to look good, and didn't get credit because of the age of the rgeat ortiz. obviously no analogy is perfect, etc etc.

the $5m is bollocks, has to be, and we can see the true place of 45yo hopkins on the market - fighting middleweight fringe contender ornelas (librado andrade's younger, and inferior, brother) then cash out in bore fest vs RJJ rematch,
