Yes, didn't bother looking at that before, but he's clearly hitting him with the inside of the glove.
That shot Salem landed would have felled a horse. Joe did bloody well to get his ass off of the canvas from that.

a couple of inches lower and Joe would have been sleeping, the shot caught him on the cheek rather than point of chin....

He still didn't seem to see it coming, which makes it all the more impressive that he got up.
It was a little on the high side though, had it his the point it would have spun his head that bit more, and he may well have been kipping like rip van.

Flipping heck! That shot by Salem is almost a carbon-copy of the shot Julian Jackson sent Herol Graham into la-la land. In a corner, Graham loading up with the right hand and 'BANG!!!'...
Joe does have a great chin. Only knocked down twice in his career by great punches that he's walked onto.
