What happened to the Collins brothers?

Post by PompeyScot »

Tony, George and Benny, all seemed to disappear. I know Tony had a few hard fights too early, so can understand why he dropped away. I was there the night Kirkland Laing destroyed George for the British title but George was still young, and only had a couple of defeats, he could still come back. Benny just had a few fights and that was it, wasn't he thought of as the most talented of the brothers?

Anybody have any ideas about why they just disappeared from the scene suddenly?

No idea, but it's strange the way they just disappeared without trace. George was a real rising star for a few years, 30 odd wins, then two losses ( both to world class opponents ) and he packs it in immediately.
Maybe it was a health issue, because losing on points to Jacobs was more are learning process than anything, and there were few who could stay with Laing when he was at the top of his game.

George was unbeaten for years before that, winning 100's of amateur fights going back to the schoolboys.
Younger brother Tony was a hot shot too, but he had some brutal losses towards the end - I can understand why he packed it in. Kevin Mitchell reminds me a lot of him, in character.

I think they came from a gypsy family. Maybe Kev over at britishboxing.net knows something?

Both George and Tony were cracking amateurs and useful pro's, but suffered from prolonged protection from, guess who, yep Frank Warrren.

I remember George always fancied the Laing fight, so as he lost so easily to Kirkland it might have been too much for him to stomach. I thought he still had a good future a British level.

Yup, I think Tony was one of the first Brit fighters to hold one of those dreaded intercontinental titles, beating up a succesion of Argies.

Wasn't George Collins sent to prison for GBH last year?

If I am thinking of the wrong fighter I apologise.
